Book Derek Walcott The Journeyman Years Volume 2 Performing Arts

Download or read book Derek Walcott The Journeyman Years Volume 2 Performing Arts written by Christopher Balme and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2013-12-06 with total page 567 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the same period in which Derek Walcott was pouring immense physical, emotional, and logistical resources into the foundation of a viable first-rate West Indian theatre company and continuing to write his inimitable poetry, he was also busy writing newspaper reviews, chiefly for the Trinidad Guardian. His prodigious reviewing activity extended far beyond those areas with which one might most readily associate his interests and convictions. As Gordon Rohlehr once presciently observed, “If one wants to see a quotidian workaday Walcott, one should go back to [his] well over five hundred articles, essays and reviews on painting, cinema, calypso, carnival, drama and lite¬rature,” articles which “reveal a rich, various, witty and scrupulous intelligence in which generous humour counterpoints acerbity.” These articles capture the vitality of Caribbean culture and shed additional light on the aesthetic preoccupations expressed in Walcott’s essays published in journals. The editors have examined the corpus of Walcott’s journalistic activity from its beginnings in 1950 to its peak in the early 1970s, and have made a generous selection of material from the Guardian, along with occasional pieces from such sources as Public Opinion (Kingston) and The Voice of St. Lucia (Castries). The articles in Volume 2 are organized as follows: the performing arts; general surveys of anglophone Caribbean drama, theatre, and society; festivals, theatre companies, and productions; British and American drama; dance and music theatre; Carnival and calypso; and cinema screenings in Trinidad. Volume 2 additionally contains an exhaustive annotated and cross-referenced chronological bibliography of Walcott’s journalism up to 1990. The co-editor Christopher Balme has written a searching introductory essay on a central theme – here, a survey of West Indian theatre and Walcott’s engagement with it, particularly the idea of a ‘National Theatre’, coupled with an illustrative discussion of the playwright’s seminal dramatic spectacle Drums and Colours.

Book excerpt: Winner: Illinois Library Association's Soon to be Famous Illinois Author Project "Paul Reid died in the snow at seventeen. The day of his death, he told a lie—and for the rest of his life, he wondered if that was what killed him." And so begins the battle for the afterlife, known as The Commons. It's been taken over by a corporate raider who uses the energy of its souls to maintain his brutal control. The result is an imaginary landscape of a broken America—stuck in time and overrun by the heroes, monsters, dreams, and nightmares of the imprisoned dead. Three people board a bus to nowhere: a New York street kid, an Iraq War veteran, and her five-year-old special-needs son. After a horrific accident, they are the last, best hope for The Commons to free itself. Along for the ride are a shotgun-toting goth girl, a six-foot-six mummy, a mute Shaolin monk with anger-management issues, and the only guide left to lead them. Three Journeys: separate but joined. One mission: to save forever. But first they have to save themselves.

Book Journeyman

Download or read book Journeyman written by Sean Pronger and published by Penguin Canada. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every young hockey player dreams of one day playing in the NHL, of skating on a line with his hero and drinking champagne in the dressing room after winning the Stanley Cup. But kids should watch what they wish for. They may make it to the pros, like Sean Pronger, only to end up playing for sixteen teams over eleven seasons. They may end up on a team with a guy like the Great One, but skate on his line only in practice when the bona fide first-line centre has the flu. And they may end up drinking champagne only because their little brother wins the Stanley Cup. Anyone who's gotten to the NHL the hard way has a story to tell. No one knows the game better than the guys on the fourth line who fight for their jobs every night. They know all too well what it's like to watch from the press box or, worse, to be sent to the minors or traded. Sean Pronger has seen it all. He's played for legendary coaches like Pat Burns and gone head-to-head with guys such as Doug Gilmour and Steve Yzerman in the faceoff circle. He was on the ice for perhaps the most notorious violent attack in recent hockey history. While playing in the minors in Winnipeg, he guzzled beer in an ice-fishing hut with grizzled veterans like John MacLean, and while playing in Europe, he caused international incidents with guys such as Doug Weight. Full of hilarious stories and self-deprecating jokes, Journeyman is a story not only about achieving a dream, but about realizing you've achieved it.

Folk wisdom is too often subtle but when sought and understood, it reveals insights that are usually not obvious upon first glance. Like myths of old, folk tales reflect facets of humanity not normally seen under the light of day. In the light of their allegory, most everyone has excellent opportunities to glean profound insights into their own nature and wisdom. In the tradition of the Grimm Brothers, The Journeyman Papers is such a tale. It is an interweaving of ten hand-picked Grimm Brothers stories that bring forth one insightful and thought-provoking tale. Each character depicts different aspects of human nature, growth and maturing that everyone must face in his or her efforts to grow up. Each character reflects life choices that impact both themselves and those whom they encounter, just as in life. Each of them faces the consequences of their choices as they navigate life's path. Dr. Nagy's work weaves together these Grimm stories in an entertaining and intriguing way. It is a fast paced tale, with many unexpectedly delightful twists and turns. You'll be drawn into the tale very quickly and find yourself wanting to know what happens next. The Journeyman Papers carry you through timeless themes that every human must encounter, understand, embrace, and learn from in their life. The lessons present themselves on an unfolding path that invites you to think deeper with every step you take.
