This anthology captures the essence of the period's literary landscape, featuring a wide array of styles from high-stakes adventures to intricate explorations of the human spirit in the face of danger. The collection stands out for its ability to weave together tales that are at once escapist in nature and deeply reflective of the era's socio-political tensions, making it a significant compilation for both aficionados and scholars of early adventure literature. The sole author behind this collection, H. C. McNeile, better known by his pen name 'Sapper', is an emblematic figure of early 20th-century British literature. His contributions to the adventure genre are monumental, with the Jim Maitland series being especially notable for its vivid portrayal of the international exploits and intrigues. McNeile's background as a soldier during World War I profoundly informs his writing, imbuing his narratives with authenticity and a keen sense of the complexities of heroism and duty. This series not only aligns with the adventurous spirit of its time but also offers critical reflections on the changing nature of heroism and British identity post-WWI. Book excerpt: 'Jim Maitland' is a novel written by H. C. McNeile—and is one of his best-known works. It follows the adventures of a British globetrotter named Jim Maitland, who McNeile describes as a "footloose sahib of the period". Brilliant and slightly uncanny, Maitland's challenges in this book begins on the Island of Tampico, where through the eyes of Leyton, the book's narrator, we see him in action as he outwits his foes and foils plans to stop him from uncovering the truth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This carefully edited collection has been designed and formatted to the highest digital standards and adjusted for readability on all devices. "THE first time I heard Jim Maitland's name mentioned was in the bar of a P.&O. We were two days out of Colombo, going East, and when I confessed my complete ignorance of the man a sort of stupefied silence settled on the company. "You don't know Jim?" murmured an Assam tea-planter. "I thought everyone knew Jim." "Anyway, if you stay in these parts long you soon will," put in someone else. "And once known—never forgotten." - H. C. McNeile (Sapper) Herman Cyril McNeile (1888-1937), commonly known as H. C. McNeile or Sapper, was a British soldier and author. Drawing on his experiences in the trenches during the First World War, he started writing short stories and getting them published in the Daily Mail. After the war McNeile left the army and continued writing, although he changed from war stories to thrillers. In 1920 he published Bulldog Drummond, whose eponymous hero became his best-known creation. The character was based on McNeile himself, on his friend Gerard Fairlie and on English gentlemen generally. McNeile interspersed his Drummond work with other novels and story collections that included two characters who appeared as protagonists in their own works, Jim Maitland and Ronald Standish. McNeile's stories are either directly about the war, or contain people whose lives have been shaped by it. His thrillers are a continuation of his war stories, with upper class Englishmen defending England from foreigners plotting against it.

Download or read book The Collected Jim Maitland Adventurer Jim Maitland The Island of Terror written by Sapper and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2014-11-21 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Maitland & Standish-Two volumes of 'Sapper's' most memorable action heroes Herman Cyril McNeile (better known to his readers as 'Sapper') was a former soldier and prolific author of adventure and detective fiction. His Bulldog Drummond stories have become classics and have been abidingly popular with enthusiasts of the genre from the time they were first published to the present day. Leonaur has already gathered together the Drummond stories and has now turned its attention to the exploits of two more of Sapper's great characters-monocled, two-fisted adventurer, Jim Maitland and the suave detective, Ronald Standish, whose exploits have been collected in two substantial and complementary volumes. These stories belong to a golden age after the First World War when 'men of the world' threw themselves into danger for the sheer thrill of the 'game'. Through Jim Maitland we experience high adventure across the globe, from burning deserts to steaming jungles (sometimes peopled by fantastical man-beasts). Aficionados of the Bulldog Drummond stories will see him echoed in Maitland in these exciting stories of thrills and desperate gambits. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket; our hardbacks are cloth bound and feature gold foil lettering on their spines and fabric head and tail bands.

Book A Book of Silence

Download or read book A Book of Silence written by Sara Maitland and published by Catapult. This book was released on 2010-09-01 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A personal and cultural exploration of silence and its value in our lives—“[an] artful book, mixing autobiography, travel writing, meditation, and essay” (Independent, UK). In her late forties, after a noisy upbringing as one of six children and adulthood as a vocal feminist and mother, Sara Maitland found herself living alone in the country and, to her surprise, falling in love with silence. In this fascinating, intelligent, and beautifully written book, Maitland describes how she began to explore this new love, spending periods of silence in the Sinai desert, the Scottish hills, and a remote cottage on the Isle of Skye. Maitland also delves deep into the rich cultural history of silence, exploring its significance in fairy tale and myth, its importance to the Western and Eastern religious traditions, and its use in psychoanalysis and artistic expression. Her story culminates in her building a hermitage on an isolated moor in Galloway. “Her book is probably unique in its subject, and timely, because good, healing silence is becoming hard to find, and we may not know we need it” (Guardian, UK).
