Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time of climate change and mass extinction, how we garden matters more than ever: “An outstanding and deeply passionate book.” —Marc Bekoff, author of The Emotional Lives of Animals Plenty of books tell home gardeners and professional landscape designers how to garden sustainably, what plants to use, and what resources to explore. Yet few examine why our urban wildlife gardens matter so much—not just for ourselves, but for the larger human and animal communities. Our landscapes push aside wildlife and in turn diminish our genetically programmed love for wildness. How can we get ourselves back into balance through gardens, to speak life's language and learn from other species? Benjamin Vogt addresses why we need a new garden ethic, and why we urgently need wildness in our daily lives—lives sequestered in buildings surrounded by monocultures of lawn and concrete that significantly harm our physical and mental health. He examines the psychological issues around climate change and mass extinction as a way to understand how we are short-circuiting our response to global crises, especially by not growing native plants in our gardens. Simply put, environmentalism is not political; it's social justice for all species marginalized today and for those facing extinction tomorrow. By thinking deeply and honestly about our built landscapes, we can create a compassionate activism that connects us more profoundly to nature and to one another.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Russell Page, one of the legendary gardeners and landscapers of the twentieth century, designed gardens great and small for clients throughout the world. His memoirs, born of a lifetime of sketching, designing, and working on site, are a mixture of engaging personal reminiscence, keen critical intelligence, and practical know-how. They are not only essential reading for today’s gardeners, but a master’s compelling reflection on the deep sources and informing principles of his art. The Education of a Gardener offers charming, sometimes pointed anecdotes about patrons, colleagues, and, of course, gardens, together with lucid advice for the gardener. Page discusses how to plan a garden that draws on the energies of the surrounding landscape, determine which plants will do best in which setting, plant for the seasons, handle color, and combine trees, shrubs, and water features to rich and enduring effect. To read The Education of a Gardener is to wander happily through a variety of gardens in the company of a wise, witty, and knowledgeable friend. It will provide pleasure and insight not only to the dedicated gardener, but to anyone with an interest in abiding questions of design and aesthetics, or who simply enjoys an unusually well-written and thoughtful book.

Book My Rock Garden Classic Reprint

Download or read book My Rock Garden Classic Reprint written by Reginald John Farrer and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Rock-Garden Nowadays it is, indeed, becoming for a new 'gardening book to slink into the world under cover of an apology; and it had been my intention to plead, in excuse, that this volume of mine held no presumptuous notion of giving help to any rival gardener (for all true gardeners are rivals). I see, however, that such a plea would at once make publication a mere impertinence. There fore I will frankly hope that some of my readers may consider this book's existence justified by the help it gives them. But if some are inclined to resent the appearance of yet another work on gardening, others may well cavil, I fear, at its confessed incompleteness and inadequacy. To these I plead that only the most stringent considerations of 'space could have compelled the many omissions that they will mark in my pages. I had originally dealt faithfully with all my plants, and if any reader now vainly search this book for a detailed treatment of Aethionema, Silene, Lychnis, Veronica, and many another treasure, let him blame not me, but the pitiless blue pencil that made such a massacre of the innocents. Faced by cruel alternatives, I chose rather. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Garden That I Love Second Series The Longest day.-some too partial persons have been pleased to say that not only the writing of books concerning gardens, but the growing atfec tion for them, owes something to The Garden that I Love. I am so little of an author, though so much of a gardener in a small way, that I fear the expression of this belief gives one a certain amount of pleasure, since even the most unambitious persons have, in their hearts, the foible of self complacency as much as the most soaring. But this weakness receives its corrective from Lamia's irony and the Poet's chastening sense. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The ideal garden is an expression of the highest hopes of the gardener. Ideals that are close to his heart are materialised in the flower groups that have found form and made pro gress under his direction. They are cherished because the way of achievement led across the stepping stones of disappointment and disillusion. Book Making a Garden to Bloom This Year Classic Reprint

Download or read book Making a Garden to Bloom This Year Classic Reprint written by Grace Tabor and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-27 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Making a Garden to Bloom This Year The design to be employed for a garden planned for only one season is not so vital as the design which permanent planting de mands; nevertheless, it should be as good as it can be, under the limitations which the character Of the soil may impose, or which are imposed by unalterable condi tions. I speak of the soil conditions sep arately, for ordinary soil is alterable, up to a certain point, even within the limits of a single summer; but there are condi tions which may not be changed within so short a space of time - conditions of shade sometimes, or moisture, or dryness - and there are some imposed by absolutely unalterable physical peculiarities. The garden design, as well as the selection of the plants, must, therefore, conform to these, for even annuals have their prefer ences, which are worth considering and conceding. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Four Seasons in the Garden Cess. The first thing to do is to grade the ground evenly. Most persons prefer a lawn that slopes away from house to road in an almost imperceptible incline of surface. Such a lawn is easier to make than a level one, be cause any little departure from a perfectly even surface Will be far less noticeable. To secure the necessary slope, ea1'th will have to be filled in near the house if the lot 18 a comparatively level one. Wherever there has been an exca vation made for the house-walls or a cellar, there Will generally be enough earth near the house to furnish all the filling needed in making the required slope. This soil, Which is almost always hard, should be worked over until it is as fine and mellow as possible, for a good lawn cannot be made from a coarse and lumpy soil. If the soil is not rich, it should be made so. I would advise the use of bone-meal in liberal quantity in preference to barn-yard fertilizer, because it never introduces the seeds of weeds into the lawn, as manure from the stables is very sure to do. Coarse bone-meal, in the pro portion of a half pound to each square yard. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
