Book excerpt: Topsy is a psychoanalytic tale of the effects of a dog on its owner; the analyst is thegreat Marie Bonaparte. Only after being told that her dog had cancer did she realie theattachment she developed to Topsy. She describes the emotions she experienced during the time ofTopsy's illness and subsequent healing. Written in France and Greece at the onset of World WarII, the story of Topsy's cancer clearly is intended to convey the ills of Europe at that time. Bonaparte's relationship with her dog reveals her own fearsabout aging, dying, being alone, as well as the uncertainty of the political situation. As shetells her story, Bonaparte is reminded of the experience of her father, who also suffered fromcancer. Topsy, while not written as a scientific study, provides insight into thepsychoanalytical effects of relationships between humans and animals. It tells us much about oneof psychotherapy's founding personages as well as the members of her professional circle in acritical period of European history. In the newintroduction, Gary Genosko reflects on Sigmund Freud's own affection for, and use of, dogs inhis analyses. He goes on to describe the relationship between Freud and Bonaparte and how dogsplayed a significant part in that companionship. Topsy will be of interest to psychologists, psychiatrists, and those who love, and have been loved by dogs. Marie Bonaparte(1882-1962) was a renowned French psychoanalyst whose best-known book was APsychoanalytic Study of Edgar Allen Poe. She also translated many of Freud'sbooks into French. GaryGenosko is a researcher affiliated with the McLuhan Program in Culture andTechnology at the University of Toronto in Canada, and the department of Sociology, Goldsmith'sCollege, University of London, England.

Underemployed and recently dumped, he was well into the downward spiral of bipolar disorder. Even with therapy, lithium, Paxil, Wellbutrin, and Prozac, he could not shake his rapid mood swings, his fear of dying, or the voice of Satan, who first visited him one sunny day in Central Park. Then came Ozzy, a black Labrador pup (named after metal's "Prince of Darkness") who leads Bruce toward recovery through complete, canine dependence. From the depths of his despair to a life remade, Bruce shows how learning to care for, train, and love the hilariously loyal Ozzy provided him with the structure and focus he needed to heal.

Book Seeing Ghosts

Book excerpt: AN NPR BOOKS WE LOVE 2021 PICK * A TIME MUST-READ BOOK OF 2021 PICK * A NEW YORK TIMES NOTABLE BOOK OF 2021 * A HARPER'S BAZAAR BOOK YOU NEED TO READ IN 2021 * A TOWN & COUNTRY BEST BOOK OF 2021 PICK * A FORTUNE BEST BOOK OF 2021 PICK For readers of Helen Macdonald and Elizabeth Alexander, a "a graceful, captivating" (New York Times Book Review) portrait of grief and the search for meaning from a singular new talent as told through the prism of three generations of her Chinese American family. Kat Chow has always been unusually fixated on death. She worried constantly about her parents dying---especially her mother. A vivacious and mischievous woman, Kat's mother made a morbid joke that would haunt her for years to come: when she died, she'd like to be stuffed and displayed in Kat's future apartment in order to always watch over her. After her mother dies unexpectedly from cancer, Kat, her sisters, and their father are plunged into a debilitating, lonely grief. With a distinct voice that is wry and heartfelt, Kat weaves together a story of the fallout of grief that follows her extended family as they emigrate from China and Hong Kong to Cuba and America. Seeing Ghosts asks what it means to reclaim and tell your family's story: Is writing an exorcism or is it its own form of preservation? The result is an extraordinary new contribution to the literature of the American family, and a provocative and transformative meditation on who we become facing loss.

Book My Journey

Download or read book My Journey written by Olivia Chow and published by Harper Collins. This book was released on 2014-01-21 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Olivia Chow--Member of Parliament, seasoned politician and widow of former New Democratic Party leader Jack Layton--tells her story in this candid memoir What drives Olivia Chow? How did she emerge from a turbulent childhood to become an inspiring political force? What influences and events have shaped her life? And how is she continuing her quest after losing her partner in life and politics? When Olivia was thirteen, her middle-class family moved from Hong Kong to Toronto, but the transition was difficult. Her mother went from having a maid to being a maid. Her father failed to carve out a working life for himself in Canada. Frustrated and bitter, he lashed out at Olivia's mother, and violence darkened their lives. A rebellious yet playful child, Olivia discovered self-discipline and became an excellent student in Canada, studying fine art and philosophy at university. After graduating, Olivia worked for a time as a sculptor. Then, driven by a desire to achieve social change, the artist became an activist, and she launched her political career. As a popular and much-admired school trustee and Toronto city councillor--the first Asian woman in that role--Olivia honed a grassroots approach and crafted progressive programs that enhanced the lives of others, especially children. Strong-willed, focused and passionate, Olivia got things done by bringing together people from all parts of the political spectrum. In the mid-1980s, Olivia met Jack Layton. Their dynamic partnership, unprecedented in Canadian political life, made a powerful impact in Toronto and on the national stage. Together, they forged a strong vision for a better country and for enlightened political change. But when her beloved partner and political soulmate died in the summer of 2011, how did she find the strength to move forward? What might we learn from her inspiring story? Those answers are here, in My Journey.

Download or read book Chu Chin Chow written by Oscar Asche and published by Createspace Independent Publishing Platform. This book was released on 2016-01-02 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Complete book and lyrics to the fabulously successful Edwardian musical. With 2,235 performances and running for five years, "Chu Chin Chow" was London's most successful musical of the World War I generation. Its record breaking run was not surpassed for over 40 years. Catering to England's craze at the time for anything oriental, actor, director and producer Oscar Asche crafted a libretto based on the story of Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves that was part melodrama and part light opera. Described as "the world's most gorgeous production" its elaborate sets and scantly dressed chorus girls became the talk of the town. The musical had a successful Broadway production, was revived many times and continued to be produced throughout the 20th Century. It was also the basis for the 1934 British musical film.
