Book excerpt: Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s creative collaborative community HITRECORD looks at love from both sides in this ingenious flippable book. So, you just got dumped, huh? Or did you just dump someone? Doesn’t matter who ended it. Either way, you’re sleeping alone tonight. But don’t worry, you’re not really alone. HITRECORD’s global community of over 750,000 active artists is here to help with The Art of Breaking Up, a new book designed to get you through this trying time. That’s over 750,000 people who know the soul-crushing pain of a broken heart. But instead of wallowing forever in vats of unproductive (but delicious) cookie dough, they’ve channeled all that misery into an insightful, funny, and smart compendium of musings, photography, drawings, collages, puzzles, recipes, games, and more—designed to explore (and distract from) the mind-numbing agony of a romantic breakup. You’ll laugh, you’ll smile, and you’ll probably cry. Everyone knows there are two sides to every break-up, so this book features a double-sided, flippable structure. One side eases the tortured consciences of the HEARTBREAKERS. Flip the book, and the other side considers the plight of the BROKEN-HEARTED. Both sides are organized chronologically with chapters that correspond to the emotional trajectory of both the HEARTBREAKER and BROKEN-HEARTED. Chapters include: Early Warning Signs, Exit Strategy, The Break Up, Acceptance, Depression, Bargaining, Anger, and Denial. Where the two sections meet in the middle there is a compelling, heart-wrenching moment where the HEARTBREAKER and BROKEN-HEARTED connect again, but we’re not giving that away. Inside this book you’ll find plenty of art, stories, comics, and other amusements, such as a Post-Break-Up Relationship Survey, Denial Yoga, Candy Hearts for Assholes, Breakup Greeting Cards, Hex Your Ex Voodoo Doll, The Free Bird Word Search Game, and a playlist or two, including "Right Back at Ya," a collection of songs to stoke the burning rage in your heart. Everything you’ll find in this book was made collaboratively by people from around the world on HITRECORD–an online creative platform for collaborative art and media projects founded and directed by Joseph Gordon-Levitt. With its universal, all-inclusive approach to the subject, The Art of Breaking Up is an acute observation of love and heartbreak in modern times, and maybe–just maybe–a salve for anyone with a broken heart.

Book Breaking the Silence

    Book Details:
  • Author : Cathy Malchiodi
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2014-04-04
  • ISBN : 1317772008
  • Pages : 230 pages

Download or read book Breaking the Silence written by Cathy Malchiodi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-04-04 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Children of violence need to be heard. Unable or unwilling to verbalize their suffering, abused children are often immobilized by fear, rage, guilt, and pain. In the second edition of Breaking the Silence: Art Therapy with Children from Violent Homes , Cathy Malchiodi demonstrates the unique power of art therapy as a tool for intervening with children from violent backgrounds. In this new edition, she describes the intervention process from intake to termination, noting the complex issues involved at various levels of evaluation and interpretation. Bringing her years of experience in working at battered women's shelters to bear on the subject, Ms. Malchiodi brings the language of art therapy to life--a language of art that gives children a voice and those who work with them, a way of listening. The emphasis here is on the short-term setting where time is at a premium and circumstances are unpredictable. It is within this setting that mental health practitioners often experience frustration and a sense of helplessness in their work with the youngest victims of abusive families. Since the first edition of this book was published, research has led to some new ideas related to sexual abuse. The author analyzes several issues concerning the treatment of sexually abused children and art expressions of sexually abused children. In addition, Ms. Malchiodi launches a discussion about the ethical issues in the use of children's art as a whole. Featured throughout the book are 95 drawings by abused children. These drawings are at once poignant and hopeful, clearly representing the extraordinary suffering that abused children experience at, at the same time, showing that they can be reached. Because the practice of art therapy methods has been integrated into many disciplines, the final chapter covers development of art therapy programs for children. The author shares information on art supplied, space, and storage ideas. For art therapists, social workers, and other practitioners who work with children in crisis, this book presents a practical methodology for intervention that fosters the compassion and insight necessary to reveal what words cannot.

Long dominated by Abstract Expressionism, the field took a new turn as two major alternatives appeared on the scene: Assemblage Art and Post-Painterly Abstraction. Together, these new styles redirected the course of American art. Circa 1958: Breaking Ground in American Art explores this decisive moment in art history by gathering--for the first time ever--62 works by 57 artists working during this brief but important period. Based on the exhibition of the same name organized by the Ackland Art Museum at The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, this volume presents essays on the artists and their work by exhibition curator and Art in America corresponding editor Roni Feinstein. With an introductory essay by Ackland Director Emily Kass, Circa 1958 features insight on groundbreaking, challenging, and significant works--some rarely before exhibited--by dozens of American artists that helped forge a new era in contemporary American art.

Book excerpt: Wade Phillips shattered Lisa McGinty's heart in Year 10 for no known reason. One minute he was the perfect boy-next-door boyfriend, star goalie on the soccer team, and future head prefect. The next he was like a different person altogether, dumping Lisa and systematically making his way through every girl in our year.By Year 12, he'd made it through most of them and was on to the year below. He'd miraculously made Head Prefect and was somehow still on the Soccer team, even though he put more effort into partying.Lisa and I were used to his sarcastic teasing, his shallow taunting, and his insincere flirting. My best friend put on a brave face in front of him, but she still felt the sting. I knew she still loved him. At least, she thought she did. I kept waiting for her to see he wasn't worth it.No one knew what happened to Wade and no one got close to him anymore. Not until a life-altering incident throws me unavoidably into his path. For one single second, I see through the armour he's built. It takes just one single second for him to see through mine. Something connects us. It turns out, Wade Phillips might be the only one who understands me. It turns out, I might be the only one who understands him.Wade Phillips might be the guy to teach me the art of breaking up, but will my heart - and Lisa's - break in the process?*For those 'Keeping Up Appearances' and 'Accidentally Perfect' fans, here's a return to that style. You'll find this story is a bit of a combination of the two. Like both, it's about growing up, finding and accepting yourself, being with people who bring out the best in you, and getting the guy that you might not think you want but that you need and, more importantly, needs you.*Please be aware that this story is set in Australia and therefore uses Australian English spelling and syntax. Not recommended for younger readers due to mature content.
