Book The Compleat Oxford Man Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Compleat Oxford Man Classic Reprint written by A. Hamilton Gibbs and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Compleat Oxford Man It is not a matter of wonder that of books written about Oxford there is no end. Oxford has been, is, and will be one of the few places in England which sets up the cacoethes scribendi. There is no library that does not contain not only those books of Oxford which are appropriately called "works," but those slim volumes of verse and parody that have caught something of the spirit of their author's time. Nearly all of them are interesting, and many are valuable. One or two, containing the Juvenilia of Oxford men who have written their names on the scroll, are not only interesting and valuable, but witty, delightful, and essentially Oxford. There are, of course, others. These, written by the all-too-daring lady novelist who invariably disguises the Alma Mater by calling her Oxbridge and similar ineptitudes, and who nearly always regards the don with a sort of sneaking affection which is peculiarly feminine and romantic, are generally funny and often painful. It has, however, been left to the present author to give us the Compleat Oxford Man - according to himself. Book Reminiscences of Oxford

Download or read book Reminiscences of Oxford written by Lilian M. Quiller Couch and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reminiscences of Oxford: By Oxford Men, 1559 1850 It seems expedient to say a word or two in preface on the scope and limitations of this volume. To begin with, it is a selection, and a selection strictly of Reminiscences of Oxford Men, - the writer of each extract being an alumnus of Oxford who, looking back, has described, judged and commented upon its collegiate life by the light of later years and a larger knowledge of the world. No room has been found for diaries, nor for any record of immediate impressions; the case of Evelyn being but a seeming relaxation of this rule, since internal evidence abounds in his 'Diary' to show that it was not posted from day to day, but often, indeed, written up long after the events which it chronicles. These Reminiscences, therefore, may be described as the outside views of men who have been inside the University. Their interest, too, is distinct from the interest of memoirs which treat elaborately of academic politics and intrigue or trace the progress of renowned movements and high events. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Oxford Men, 1880-1892: With a Record of Their Schools, Honours and Degrees; Illustrated With Portraits and Views T had originally been my intention to append the contents of this volume to my Oxford Men and Their Colleges, but owing to the elaboration of my plan, the book would have attained unwieldy pro portions; and I was thus compelled to divide it into two parts. The present work continues and completes Alumni containing the matriculation register from 1880 to 1892 alphabetically arranged as a distinct division, to which has been added where practicable birthdays. Book The Charm of Oxford Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Charm of Oxford Classic Reprint written by J. Wells and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-04 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Charm of Oxford There are many books on Oxford; the justification for this new one is Mr. Blackall's drawings. They will serve by their grace and charm pleasantly to recall to those who know Oxford the scenes they love; they will incite those who do not know Oxford to remedy that defect in their lives. My own letterpress is only written to accompany the drawings. It is intended to remind Oxford men of the things they know or ought to know; it is intended still more to help those who have not visited Oxford to understand the drawings and to appreciate some of the historical associations of the scenes represented. I have written quite freely, as this seemed the best way to create the "impression" wished. I have to acknowledge some obligations to Messrs. Seccombe Scotts Praise of Oxford, a book the pages of which an Oxford man can always turn over with pleasure, and to Mr. J. B. Firths Minstrelsy of Isis; it is not his fault that the poetic merit of so much of his collection is poor. Oxford has not on the whole been fortunate in her poets. My own quotations are more often chosen for their local colour than for their poetic merit. I have unavoidably had to borrow a good deal from my own Oxford and its Colleges, but the aim of the two books is very different. Book The Oxford Movement Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Oxford Movement Classic Reprint written by Morgan Dix and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-30 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Oxford Movement Inevitably that Kingdom has a fight for life. The spirit of the age, the wisdom of this world, and the secular Kingdoms founded by men; all these make war on it. The history of the Church includes that of the efforts of her enemies, from age to age, to crush her, to detach men from her, or to subject her to their control, at the expense of her principles, her laws and her faith. But we must now restrict our view to the branch of the Church from which we sprang. It is a wonder that it exists. Storms have beaten on it incessantly they are raging against it still. The history of the Church in Great Britain is that of perpetual strife against de grading and destructive influences; to read it is like looking at a ship in very heavy seas, now lifted up into full view, now plunged into the trough of the waves; sometimes lost to sight, so that the heart stands still, thinking that she may have foundered and will never reappear. Book In Praise of Oxford

Download or read book In Praise of Oxford written by Thomas Seccombe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from In Praise of Oxford: An Anthology in Prose and Verse But for all that the adjustment of Oxford to the needs of the national life has been perhaps far more complete and efficient than its critics, or even than those who seek to remedy its defects by engineering schools and working-men students, imagine. In its earlier ages Oxford was an European school, swarming with poor students and hungry foreigners prepared to vindicate its claim of supremacy over Paris or Bologna by an immediate appeal to the knife. By the time of Elizabeth Oxford appears to have learned the lesson of the Norman Conquest, that Englishmen need governors. It endeavoured to supply them on national lines by becoming the nursery of the rich. It has succeeded ever since to a certain extent in subjecting the sons of the rich to a more or less voluntary discipline as a preparation for those places on the quarter-deck of the vessel of state which it inculcates, by means chiefly of an appeal to experience, that they have every right to expect. It aims far less at the creation than at the communication of ideas (already well aired in the world) through the personal influence of the Oxford coach - Oxford's prime product of the last century, who at the expense of much private ex haustion and public indifference consecrates his best hours not to the University Press but to his particular pupils. This is the Oxford system to dispossess or disinherit which will require the most strenuous and unremitting labour on the part of the ages. Book The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde

Download or read book The Complete Works of Oscar Wilde written by Oscar Wilde and published by Clarendon Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 360 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume presents for the first time the complete textual history of one of the most famous love letters ever written. Addressed to Wilde's lover, Lord Alfred Douglas, and composed in Reading Gaol, it was later given the title 'De Profundis' by Wilde's friend and literary executor, RobertRoss. It was Ross's severely abridged and sanitized version, published in 1905 and again 1908, which inaugurated the tradition of seeing De Profundis as the apologia pro sua vita of a broken man. This edition takes account of this complex heritage by arguing that Wilde's prison document may be seennot just as the basis of a letter (a typed copy of which may have been sent to Douglas) but also as an unfinished literary work which he intended for public consumption at some future date. Such a case is made by placing in the public domain, often for the first time, a number of different works, derived from different texts, each of which bears witness to Wilde's multiple intentions for his prison document. These texts comprise: the manuscript held in the British Library; the version of Wilde's letter published by his son, Vyvyan Holland, from a typescript bequeathed to him by Robert Ross;hitherto unpublished witnesses to that typescript; and Ross's editions, collated with each other. The commentary to this edition - again for the first time - sets Wilde's story of his own life in 'De Profundis' against the testimony of other players in his drama, including, most importantly, that ofDouglas. In so doing it exposes the partial nature of Wilde's narrative, as well as the personal obsessions which animated it. The commentary also demonstrates a hitherto unnoticed element of Wilde's work, the extent and nature of its richly layered intertextuality and its similarity, in itscompositional practices, to many of his earlier works.
