It provides different perspectives on the design and operation of regional development strategies under the Structural Funds, from people closely involved in studying, managing or advising on the process at EU, national and regional levels. It therefore offers a more comprehensive and detailed understanding of the structural policies than has been available hitherto. This will prove particularly useful to researchers, practitioners and students interested in European regional policies and processes.

Download or read book Comparing Post War Japanese and Finnish Economies and Societies written by Yasushi Tanaka and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-11-13 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book compares two countries with striking parallels in economic and political outcomes, yet with some distinct features in terms of institutional structures, relative size, and culture. Therefore, this book forms a fruitful platform for the study of the similarities and differences in the economic and societal development of Japan and Finland. Despite their geographic distance from one another and the aforementioned differences, both countries experienced rather similar economic and societal development patterns after the Second World War. The study of these societies both individually and through commonalities will provide a unique perspective on the emergence of modern economies and institutions. The book provides comprehensive coverage on issues such as welfare state formation and society, security and military spending, education system, industrial development, international trade, governmental economic policies, energy solutions, and bubbles and their collapse; thus, issues typical for these countries, as well as most modern states, studied from a longitudinal perspective. The book aims to answer a fundamental question in social science: Why do there seem to be common trends and developmental paths among countries differing in size, culture, and economic structure? This book will provide insights for those seeking to decipher how the developments in their own countries came about and where they may be headed to.
Download or read book Mainstreaming Equal Opportunities in the Structural Funds written by Mary Braithwaite and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1997, the European Union confirmed the promotion of equality between men and women as one of its political priorities by including it in the Treaty Amsterdam. A substantial change in the treatment of equal opportunities for women and men is required for the next generation of the Structural Funds, to meet the policy regulations agreed by the European Union and Member States. This report considers the issue of opportunities between women and men - called "mainstreaming ". The authors aim to explain the new approach to equal opportunities in the new regulations and guidelines for Structural Fund programmes and to show how equal opportunities could be addressed in the new programming period to meet the new requirements. It also provides some examples of some of the initiatives already being taken by regions of France, Germany and the UK to put the mainstreaming approach into practice.

Download or read book Schoolteachers and the Nordic Model written by Jesper Eckhardt Larsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Schoolteachers and the Nordic Model examines the cultural distinctiveness of the Nordic teaching profession and teacher training compared to examples from Europe and North America. The book explores the concept of these ‘teacher cultures’ as various dimensions of professional identities, recruitment patterns, teachers’ social status, values and knowledge. It considers how Nordic teachers ́ socio-cultural backgrounds and their shifting societal roles compare with continental European examples, analysing the societal consequences of teacher cultures for the current Nordic welfare states. Offering a unique focus on teachers, the book uses a shared comparative and historical approach to add new knowledge to the analysis of global convergence and divergence in educational systems. The book will be of great interest to researchers, scholars and post-graduate students in the fields of comparative education, educational policy, the sociology of education and the history of education. It will also be of interest to policy makers, teacher educators and school leaders.
