Download or read book Aid to Africa written by Gordon Cumming and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The end of the Cold War forced Western donors to rethink their aid relations with Africa. This book looks at two of these donors, France and Britain, and asks whether the development programmes of these former colonial powers have undergone radical changes since the end of the Old World Order. It focuses on the introduction of a controversial new ’regime’ trend - political conditionality - and uses policy models to illustrate the driving forces behind this new development strategy and explain substantial differences in France and Britain’s practice of political conditionality in Togo and Kenya. Overall, this volume - the first comparative study of French and British aid in the post-Cold War period - offers fresh insights into the evolution of the political assistance agenda and into deeper forces at work within the French and UK policy processes.

Book Ideas Interests and Foreign Aid

Download or read book Ideas Interests and Foreign Aid written by A. Maurits van der Veen and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-01 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do countries give foreign aid? Although many countries have official development assistance programs, this book argues that no two of them see the purpose of these programmes in the same way. Moreover, the way countries frame that purpose has shaped aid policy choices past and present. The author examines how Belgium long gave aid out of a sense of obligation to its former colonies, The Netherlands was more interested in pursuing international influence, Italy has focused on the reputational payoffs of aid flows and Norwegian aid has had strong humanitarian motivations since the beginning. But at no time has a single frame shaped any one country's aid policy exclusively. Instead, analysing half a century of legislative debates on aid in these four countries, this book presents a unique picture both of cross-national and over time patterns in the salience of different aid frames and of varying aid programmes that resulted.

Checklists of guidance and key considerations for protocols are provided at the end of each chapter. Download or read book From Output to Outcome written by Jos van Beurden and published by Amsterdam University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study traces the fascinating history of the Policy and Operations Evaluation Department (IOB) of the Directorate-General for Development Cooperation and, from 1996, of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. In 1977 Jan Pronk, the Minister for Development Cooperation, established an independent review unit that would provide him with timely, reliable information on the quality of Dutch development assistance projects, to counter both the often overly positive reports from his own staff, and the attacks on Dutch development assistance policy in parliament and the media. A quarter century later it is difficult to imagine foreign assistance without an evaluation department. Yet, the IOB's course has been far from smooth. The authors describe the challenges to its independence and tackle the question of the effects of the department's many reports.
