Download or read book The Company Weavers of Bengal written by Hameeda Hossain and published by Delhi ; New York : Oxford University Press. This book was released on 1988 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The collapse of the weaving industry in eighteenth-century Bengal has been the subject of considerable controversy. Drawing on newly discovered eighteenth-century Bengali manuscripts that contain the East India Company's correspondence, account books, and deeds of agreement with weavers, Hossain here suggests that the decline of the weaving industry was largely a result of the Company's attempt to enforce lower wages and maintain strict control over the weavers.

Book The Transition to a Colonial Economy

Download or read book The Transition to a Colonial Economy written by Prasannan Parthasarathi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2001-04-19 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to widespread belief, poverty and low standards of living have been characteristic of India for centuries. Challenging this view, Prasannan Parthasarathi demonstrates that, until the late eighteenth century, labouring groups in South India, those at the bottom of the social order, were in a powerful position, receiving incomes well above subsistence. The decline in their economic fortunes, the author asserts, was a process initiated towards the end of that century, with the rise of colonial rule. Building on revisionist interpretations, he examines the transformation of Indian society and its economy under British rule through the prism of the labouring classes, arguing that their treatment by the early colonial state had no precedent in the pre-colonial past and that poverty and low wages were a product of colonial rule. The book promises to make an important contribution to the economic history of the region, and to the study of colonialism.

Book Consumption and the World of Goods

Download or read book Consumption and the World of Goods written by John Brewer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 660 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study of past society in terms of what it consumes rather than what it produces is - relatively speaking - a new development. The focus on consumption changes the whole emphasis and structure of historical enquiry. While human beings usually work within a single trade or industry as producers, as, say, farmers or industrial workers, as consumers they are active in many different markets or networks. And while history written from a production viewpoint has, by chance or design, largely been centred on the work of men, consumption history helps to restore women o the mainstream. The history of consumption demands a wide range of skills. It calls upon the methods and techniques of many other disciplines, including archaeology, sociology, social and economic history, anthropology and art criticism. But it is not simply a melting-pot of techniques and skills, brought to bear on a past epoch. Its objectives amount to a new description of a past culture in its totality, as perceived through its patterns of consumption in goods and services. Consumption and the World of Goods is the first of three volumes to examine history from this perspective, and is a unique collaboration between twenty-six leading subject specialists from Europe and North America. The outcome is a new interpretation of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, one that shapes a new historical landscape based on the consumption of goods and services.

Book Cotton Textiles in Bengal Economy 1900 1947

Download or read book Cotton Textiles in Bengal Economy 1900 1947 written by A. Z. M. Iftikhar-ul-Awwal and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cotton textiles of every sort - fine, superfine and coarse - were once manufactured in abundance in the province of Bengal. The produce of the looms not only fully met the internal demand of her population but was also exported to distant lands where it was held in high esteem. The extraordinary diffusion of the industry throughout the province that made possible surplus production had its abrupt end in the first half of the nineteenth century. According to Vera Anstey, the decline continued throughout the nineteenth century. Among the causes of its decline were the oppression of the East India Company's servants on the weavers, the iniquitous tariff policy of the colonial government both in England and in India and the industrial revolution. Other causal factors that have been mentioned are the disappearance of the regal courts in India and the slow, laborious and wasteful methods followed in the manufacture of cotton fabrics by handloom weavers. The decline naturally resulted in the loss of a time-honoured hereditary profession in which millions were employed. Most members of the weaving caste either lost their job or became destitute. In this paper, however, we intend to focus our attention solely on the cotton textile industry of Bengal from 1900 till the end of the colonial period in 1947. In other words, we shall be looking both at the cotton mill industry of the province that was set up as a result of emergence of modern factory system in India as well as at the handloom industry, Thus by avoiding a fragmentary study, we shall have a complete glimpse of the cotton textile industry as a whole. We shall then also be able to evaluate the contribution of each branch of the textile industry to the economy of Bengal.

The transition from Nawabi to Colonial rule in Bengal has been beautifully captured through these textiles. Book Bengal Industries and the British Industrial Revolution 1757 1857

Download or read book Bengal Industries and the British Industrial Revolution 1757 1857 written by Indrajit Ray and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2011-08-09 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to enlighten two grey areas of industrial historiography. Although Bengal industries were globally dominant on the eve of the industrial revolution, no detailed literature is available about their later course of development. A series of questions are involved in it. Did those industries decline during the spells of British industrial revolution? If yes, what were their reasons? If not, the general curiosity is: On which merits could those industries survive against the odds of the technological revolution? A thorough discussion on these issues also clears up another area of dispute relating to the occurrence of deindustrialization in Bengal, and the validity of two competing hypotheses on it, viz. i) the mainstream hypothesis of market failures, and ii) the neo-marxian hypothesis of imperialistic state interventions

Drawing on a mass of hitherto unused material contained in the company's administrative and financial records, the book offers a reconstruction of the inner workings of the company as it made the remarkable transition from business to empire during the late-eighteenth century. H. V. Bowen profiles the company's stockholders and directors and examines how those in London adapted their methods, working practices, and policies to changing circumstances in India. He also explores the company's multifarious interactions with the domestic economy and society, and sheds important new light on its substantial contributions to the development of Britain's imperial state, public finances, military strength, trade and industry. This book will appeal to all those interested in imperial, economic and business history.
