Book The Compact Muon Solenoid Heavy Ion Program

Download or read book The Compact Muon Solenoid Heavy Ion Program written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Pb-Pb center of mass energy at the LHC will exceed that of Au-Au collisions at RHIC (Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider) by nearly a factor of 30, providing exciting opportunities for addressing unique physics issues in a completely new energy domain. The interest of the Heavy Ion (HI) Physics at LHC is discussed in more detail in the LHC-USA white paper and the Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) Heavy Ion proposal. A few highlights are presented in this document. Heavy ion collisions at LHC energies will explore regions of energy and particle density significantly beyond those reachable at RHIC. The energy density of the thermalized matter created at the LHC is estimated to be 20 times higher than at RHIC, implying an initial temperature, which is greater than at RHIC by more than a factor of two. The higher density of produced partons also allows a faster thermalization. As a consequence, the ratio of the quark-gluon plasma lifetime to the thermalization time increases by a factor of 10 over RHIC. Thus the hot, dense systems created in HI collisions at the LHC spend most of the time in a purely partonic state. The longer lifetime of the quark-gluon plasma state widens significantly the time window available to probe it experimentally. RHIC experiments have reported evidence for jet production in HI collisions and for suppression of high p{sub T} particle production. Those results open a new field of exploration of hot and dense nuclear matter. Even though RHIC has already broken ground, the production rates for jets with p{sub T}> 30 GeV are several orders of magnitude larger at the LHC than at RHIC, allowing for systematic studies with high statistics in a clean kinematic region. High p{sub T} quark and gluon jets can be used to study the hot hadronic medium produced in HI interactions. The larger Q2 causes jets to materialize very soon after the collision. They are thus embedded in and propagate through the dense environment as it forms and evolves. Through their interactions with the environment, they measure its properties and are sensitive to the formation of quark-gluon plasma. Moreover large transverse momentum probes are easily isolated experimentally from the background of soft particles produced in the collision. From a theoretical point of view, the high p{sub T} ensures that the medium effects are perturbatively calculable, strengthening their usefulness as quantitative diagnostic tools. Another interesting aspect of heavy ion collisions at the energy of the LHC is the time evolution of the system. At the moment of the collision, this may be described in terms of classical color fields and the gross properties of the system are calculable in perturbative QCD. Lastly let us mention the fact that at central rapidities LHC is expected to reach a truly baryon-free regime. Results from RHIC have shown that not all the valence quarks are removed from central rapidities at RHIC.

Book Luminosity Measurement at the Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment of the LHC

Download or read book Luminosity Measurement at the Compact Muon Solenoid Experiment of the LHC written by Olena Karacheban and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-06-22 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the application of a novel technology for beam instrumentation and luminosity measurement and first results on a cutting edge technology potentially to be used after the upgrade of the Large Hadron Collider to higher luminosity. It presents a unique diamond-based luminometer with a detailed performance study. The online bunch-by-bunch luminosity measurements provide an invaluable feedback to the Collider for beam optimisation and for the understanding of beam dynamics. The precision of the luminosity measurement is crucial for all physics analyses. This book highlights the Van der Meer method, which is used for the calibration of the luminometers of the CMS (Compact Muon Solenoid) experiment, and describes the estimate of systematic uncertainties, e.g. due to radiation damage of sensors and electronics and uncertainties of beam parameters. For the future high-luminosity upgrade of the collider, sapphire sensors are investigated in a test beam. It is demonstrated for the first time that sapphire sensors can be used as single particle detectors. A model for the charge transport in sapphire is developed and successfully applied.

Book Proceedings of the 31st International Conference on High Energy Physics ICHEP 2002

Download or read book Proceedings of the 31st International Conference on High Energy Physics ICHEP 2002 written by S. Bentvelsen and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 1004 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first precision measurements on CP violation in the B system are reported. Both the BELLE and the BABAR collaboration presented, among others, results for sin 2ß with much improved accuracy. Results from the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory, SNO, also deserve to be mentioned. The convincing evidence of solar neutrino oscillations had been presented by SNO prior to the conference; a full presentation was given at the conference. An incredibly precise measurement of the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon is reported, a fresh result from the Brookhaven National Laboratory. Apart from these distinct physics highlights, there are also the first results from the new Tevatron run and from the relativistic heavy ion collider RHIC. Theorists write of our ever better understanding of the Standard Model and of what might lie beyond. Risky as it is to highlight only a couple of exciting subjects, it is merely meantto whet the appetite for further reading.

Book Jet Quenching in the Compact Muon Solenoid at the LHC

Download or read book Jet Quenching in the Compact Muon Solenoid at the LHC written by David López Mateos and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis we perform analyses on simulated data that allow us to demonstrate the sensitivity of the CMS experiment to certain jet quenching observables. In particular, two theoretical scenarios which mimic RHIC data at low PT and which show either no quenching or BDMPS-based quenching at high PT are formulated. The difference between these two scenarios is analyzed for RAA, RCP at different centralities and jet-specific observables such as jet energy spectra, fragmentation functions and jet profiles. We show how these analyses indicate that the large acceptance of the CMS detector, combined with the high granularity in the energy resolution of the calorimeter will be essential tools in studying the phenomenon of jet quenching. Finally, we propose extensions to this work in preparation to analyzing the data from Pb-Pb runs at the LHC. Disclaimer: The work on this thesis does not model the CMS detector geometry with the accuracy required for official analyses, which are fully representative of the CMS detector capabilities. Such analyses require of the full CMS simulation machinery and are left to the CMS Heavy Ion group as a whole.

Book Particle Physics in the New Millennium

Download or read book Particle Physics in the New Millennium written by Josip Trampetic and published by Springer. This book was released on 2008-01-11 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The traditional purpose of the Adriatic Meeting is to present most advanced scienti?c research conducted by the lecturers who take part in the development of their ?elds and, in addition, to provide a school-like atmosphere for young scientists. Dubrovnik, as a geographical centre of this region of Europe, provided a most adequate location for this conference. Having very agreeable surroundings, the conference site nevertheless gave a focus for very strong scienti?c interaction. The subjects chosen for the 8th meeting, in September 2001, were gauge theories, particle phenomenology, string theories and cosmology. We were able to bring together a very good cross section of outstanding scientists who gave extraorinarily good presentations. Certainely one reason for this success is that most of us feel obliged to help the scienti?c life in South East Europe return to its former level. However, there are very exciting new scienti?c developments as well. Part of the meeting was dominated by neutrino physics which has just seen exciting progress by establishing neutrino masses experimentally. This was d- cussed within neutrino masses and grand uni?ed theories (GUTs). General - pects of neutrino physics and CP violation, neutrino mixing and the bayron asymmetry were presented along the same lines. On the theoretical side the idea of the construction of gauge theories on non-commutative spaces and their phenomenological implications is accepted worldwide within the particle physics community.

Book Introduction to Relativistic Heavy Ion Physics

Download or read book Introduction to Relativistic Heavy Ion Physics written by Jerzy Bartke and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2009 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book attempts to cover the fascinating field of physics of relativistic heavy ions, mainly from the experimentalist's point of view. After the introductory chapter on quantum chromodynamics, basic properties of atomic nuclei, sources of relativistic nuclei, and typical detector set-ups are described in three subsequent chapters. Experimental facts on collisions of relativistic heavy ions are systematically presented in 15 consecutive chapters, starting from the simplest features like cross sections, multiplicities, and spectra of secondary particles and going to more involved characteristics like correlations, various relatively rare processes, and newly discovered features: collective flow, high pT suppression and jet quenching. Some entirely new topics are included, such as the difference between neutron and proton radii in nuclei, heavy hypernuclei, and electromagnetic effects on secondary particle spectra.Phenomenological approaches and related simple models are discussed in parallel with the presentation of experimental data. Near the end of the book, recent ideas about the new state of matter created in collisions of ultrarelativistic nuclei are discussed. In the final chapter, some predictions are given for nuclear collisions in the Large Hadron Collider (LHC), now in construction at the site of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), Geneva. Finally, the appendix gives us basic notions of relativistic kinematics, and lists the main international conferences related to this field. A concise reference book on physics of relativistic heavy ions, it shows the present status of this field.
