Book Japanese and Chinese Immigrant Activists

Download or read book Japanese and Chinese Immigrant Activists written by Josephine Fowler and published by Rutgers University Press. This book was released on 2007-06-28 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Japanese and Chinese immigrants in the United States have traditionally been characterized as hard workers who are hesitant to involve themselves in labor disputes or radical activism. How then does one explain the labor and Communist organizations in the Asian immigrant communities that existed from coast to coast between 1919 and 1933? Their organizers and members have been, until now, largely absent from the history of the American Communist movement. In Japanese and Chinese Immigrant Activists, Josephine Fowler brings us the first in-depth account of Japanese and Chinese immigrant radicalism inside the United States and across the Pacific. Drawing on multilingual correspondence between left-wing and party members and other primary sources, such as records from branches of the Japanese Workers Association and the Chinese Nationalist Party, Fowler shows how pressures from the Comintern for various sub-groups of the party to unite as an “American” working class were met with resistance. The book also challenges longstanding stereotypes about the relationships among the Communist Party in the United States, the Comintern, and the Soviet Party.

Book America Through the Eyes of an Immigrant from a Socialist Country

Download or read book America Through the Eyes of an Immigrant from a Socialist Country written by Dave W Chen and published by Dorrance Publishing. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 296 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: America Through the Eyes of an Immigrant from a Socialist Country By: Dave W Chen America Through the Eyes of an Immigrant from a Socialist Country details Dave W Chen’s early life in China, his experiences immigrating to and living in America, and the stark difference between the two systems. Many Americans are naïve about the evils of living in a socialist country compared to the freedom of capitalist America. With his perspective as an immigrant, Chen has a unique vantage point as first an outsider and then an insider and citizen of the USA. Americans must treasure this country in order to keep it great and never let it slip into the hands of socialism or communism where dictators and their accomplices benefit and the rest of mankind suffers.

Book Migration in the Time of Revolution

Download or read book Migration in the Time of Revolution written by Taomo Zhou and published by Cornell University Press. This book was released on 2019-10-15 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Migration in the Time of Revolution examines how two of the world's most populous countries interacted between 1945 and 1967, when the concept of citizenship was contested, political loyalty was in question, identity was fluid, and the boundaries of political mobilization were blurred. Taomo Zhou asks probing questions of this important period in the histories of the People's Republic of China and Indonesia. What was it like to be a youth in search of an ancestral homeland that one had never set foot in, or an economic refugee whose expertise in private business became undesirable in one's new home in the socialist state? What ideological beliefs or practical calculations motivated individuals to commit to one particular nationality while forsaking another? As Zhou demonstrates, the answers to such questions about "ordinary" migrants are crucial to a deeper understanding of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Through newly declassified documents from the Chinese Foreign Ministry Archives and oral history interviews, Migration in the Time of Revolution argues that migration and the political activism of the ethnic Chinese in Indonesia were important historical forces in the making of governmental relations between Beijing and Jakarta after World War II. Zhou highlights the agency and autonomy of individuals whose life experiences were shaped by but also helped shape the trajectory of bilateral diplomacy. These ethnic Chinese migrants and settlers were, Zhou contends, not passively acted upon but actively responding to the developing events of the Cold War. This book bridges the fields of diplomatic history and migration studies by reconstructing the Cold War in Asia as social processes from the ground up.
