Book Communism in Finland

Download or read book Communism in Finland written by John H. Hodgson and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2015-12-08 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A complete history of the Finnish Communist Party, one of the most active and popular communist parties outside the Sino-Soviet bloc. Starting with the founding of the Finnish Social Democratic Party in the 1880's, leading to the founding of the Communist Party by dissident Social Democrats in the early 1920’s, this book gives a detailed account of the activities, goals, and leadership of communism in Finland. One major aspect of this study is the contention of the author that the war in Finland following Germany’s defeat in 1918 was not a revolution fought against the Russian army, but rather a civil war, with Red Finn pitted against White Finn. Originally published in 1967. Thirteen chapters cover Scandinavia past and present; parties in developmental perspective; the Scandinavian party system model; the Nordic model of government; the Nordic welfare model; legislative-executive relations in the region; the changing security environment and the transition from Cold War ‘security threats’ to the ‘security challenges' of today; and a concluding chapter looks at regional co-operation, Nordic involvement in the ‘European project’ and the Nordic states as ‘moral superpowers’. Book Transnational Moments of Change

Download or read book Transnational Moments of Change written by Gerd Rainer-Horn and published by Rowman & Littlefield Publishers. This book was released on 2004-01-29 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transnational Moments of Change offers a broad introduction to the methodology and practice of transnational history. To demonstrate the value of this approach, the work focuses on Europe since World War II, a period whose study particularly benefits from a transnational vantage point. Twelve distinguished contributors from around the globe offer a range of transnational approaches to three continent-wide moments of change. The work begins with a look at the close of World War Two, when liberation from Nazi occupation offered the opportunity for social and political experiment. Next, essays explore the late 1960s as generational change and political dissatisfaction rocked urban centers from Paris to Prague. Finally, the book turns to the fall of communism, a moment of revolutionary change that not only spread rapidly from country to country, but even affected and interacted with protest movements in Western Europe and elsewhere. Together, the essays provide both a new perspective on postwar Europe and a range of models for the historian interested in using the transnational approach.

Book On the Left in America

Book excerpt: Previously available only in an out-of-print Swedish edition published in 1955, Henry Bengston's firsthand account deals with what historian Dag Blanck calls the "other Swedish America." Swedish immigrants in general were conservative, but Bengston and others--most notably Joe Hill--joined the working-class labor movement on the left, primarily as Debsian socialists, although their ranks included other socialists, communists, and anarchists. Involved in the radical labor movement on many fronts, Bengston was the editor of Svenska Socialisten from 1912 until he dropped out of the Scandinavian Socialist Federation in 1920. Even after 1920, however, his sympathies remained with the movement he had once strongly espoused.
