Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of the Commonwealth The shorter report is now given to the public on the sole responsibility of the writer himself, because no other way was apparent in which it could be submitted to their judgment. Throughout he has worked in the light cast by the many sided criticisms of the Round Table groups whose numerous members re ect every shade of Opinion. Without these materials the report could never have been Written in its present form; but the writer himself has, of necessity, bad to decide what to reject and hat to accept. He has no authority for stating, therefore, that the report represents any opinion but his own. The best materials, indeed, have often been furnished by colleagues who would hesitate to accept his con elusions as a whole or even in part. It is for that reason that he alone can make himself responsible for its issue to the public, who are invited to judge its conclusions purely in the light of the facts and reasons upon which they are based. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from On Christian Commonwealth I have termed this an adaptation, for the sole reason that the greater portion of the notes with which the original is furnished have been omitted. Consisting, as they do, mainly of references to German writers, they are of more interest to German than English readers. Such portions of the notes as I have deemed indispensable to the meaning, I have incorporated into the main text. The subject of the work is one which, in some shape or another, is at the present time occupying the minds of all those who take an interest in. Our national prosperity; and my desire is that, by giving easier access to the ideas of so deep a thinker, I may be the means of enabling some one, who has the power as well as the will, to apply those ideas to England. Book County Option in Indiana Classic Reprint

Download or read book County Option in Indiana Classic Reprint written by J. Frank Hanly and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from County Option in Indiana Fellow Citizens: It is not only the privilege, it is the right and the bounden duty of every man living in a free commonwealth to speak the truth to his fellows, without fear or favor, as God gives him to see and understand the truth, concerning any matter affecting the public welfare. One's countrymen are entitled to the reason for the faith by which he walks. They may not accept his faith, but his reasons for his faith are their just due. This is peculiarly true of one who has held at the hands of his fellows high place in the conduct of the commonwealth's affairs. I am here today to embrace that privilege, to claim that right and discharge that duty concerning a matter which I have long felt and do now feel to be of deep and abiding importance to this people - a people, who, in the light of my many limitations and temperamental defects, have signally honored me, making me thereby their debtor to the end of my days, be they few or many. For months I have not spoken on any public question. But the time has come when conditions in the state and gratitude for past favors compel me to break my silence. I speak disinterestedly. If I know my soul I have no wish but the public good, no desire but the happiness of this people. The fires of self-interest burn low on the hearthstone of my heart. My country has become my larger self, the dearest part of me. I have no machine or organization to promote; no patronage to bestow; no favorites to reward; no foes to punish. I seek no office; no public preferment of any kind. There is absolutely nothing within your power to give or bestow that I desire you to do for me other than to bear me for my cause, to give consideration to what I say relating to matters of public concern, and to permit me to continue to abide among you and share your destiny, whatever that destiny may be, until my life's measure shall be filled. I am conscious that it will be difficult for some men to accept this statement. Themselves accustomed to act only upon motives of personal interest, they are slow to believe that another may act without regard to such interests. And yet the statement is absolutely true and has been true every hour for more than five years. There came a moment early in my administration of the state government when I was compelled to choose between public obligation and personal ambition; between duty and popularity; between service and subserviency; between exposure of wrong and condonation of crime. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The First Decade of the Australian Commonwealth: A Chronicle of Contemporary Politics, 1901-1910 Yet, if history is philosophy teaching by examples, it must surely be desirable that the record of those examples should have the chance of verification before the distorting influence of subsequent events has, blurred their outline, or minimised their importance. The setters-forth of those facts, the hodmen of literature are not without their value to the philosophic historian, who, in another century, may seek to work out the harmonious relations of cause and effect in con nection with national development. The narrative in the following pages will be but as an Oft told story to the readers Of to-day; but, by its concentration and consecutiveness, it will help to focus in their minds the sum of what has been done, and what has been left undone, by the Commonwealth Government in the days of its infancy. I hope it will be found not altogether useless in the present, as well as in the future. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-01-15 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of the Commissioners of Lunacy to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts: January, 1875 Another thought connected with this review is, that almost one-half of all the insane in the State remain still outside of the hospitals. It is true, some of them may be well provided for; but as far as cure and treatment are concerned, they surely cannot, in the acute stages of the disease, have as good advantages. Besides, what aggravates the matter is, that we know so little about them as a whole. There are undoubtedly some acute cases of insanity in private houses and in alms houses that should at once he transferred to the hospital. The commission of 1854 found over three hundred such cases, and there is good reason to believe such still exist. This ignorance and these wrongs will continue until some steps are taken by legislation to cause this whole field to be more carefully surveyed, and proper measures taken to correct existing evils. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Citizen and the Commonwealth: A Discourse Delivered in the First Congregational Church in Holliston, on the Day of the Annual State Fast, April 10, 1851 Passing, then, these preliminaries, I purpose now to show more at length, my opinion and its reasons, respecting our relations as citizens to laws and law-makers, as this question has been freshly started upon us by the recent slave-legislation of Congress, and its unfortunate results in our own near vicinity. I commence with a position which I shall assume to need no defense - that God is of right the Supreme Law-giver over all orders of accountable beings. Consequently no inferior legislation can innocently conflict with his will, where this is clearly, explicitly announced. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hidden Power In symbolizing this long dormant and now sharply aroused civic spirit, the author has attempted to de lineate the character of Robert Leigh. To represent an industry which, during long years has wrecked the hopes of men and women, he has designed the character of Beerman. Each symbolizes a principle; neither relates to men. There is scarcely an Ameri can commonwealth that is unacquainted with the redeeming qualities of the one, or the repelling feat ures of the other. If, as we contemplate the ignoble purposes and debasing methods of invisible government, there be reason to feel depressed, it is yet heartening to re flect that its degraded and degrading influence inour political life is steadily and rapidly waning, that the invisible law, so relentlessly enforced, is. Book Travels in Virginia in Revolutionary Times Classic Reprint

Download or read book Travels in Virginia in Revolutionary Times Classic Reprint written by Alfred J. Morrison and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Travels in Virginia in Revolutionary Times This is a book of Travels in Virginia during a period that may be called revolutionary, from the year 1769 to the year 1802, when the United States lay still to the east of France and Spain, and the limit of Virginia to the west was the river Ohio: it was a proud commonwealth, and with reason, territorially, in the character of its ruling people, and in that inexplicable inheritance which has made Virginia significant. It is interesting to observe, among these travellers, how care fully the best informed of them estimate the strength of Vir ginia, whether justly or not regarded at home and here and there abroad as the most influential of the new states. Those were extraordinary years in the making of America, the fund of the capital of the country, as it were, accumulating to the point of application in surprising ways. It is well to look back, through foreign eyes, and see a little of what the situa tion was at that time in the State of the first dynasty.
