Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commonwealth at War The date of each of these essays is precisely indi cated so that it may be borne in mind in the criticisms they may suggest. There is inevitably some repeti tion, and most of them contain expressions which they would not have contained, had they been written earlier or later; but to modify the record of expressed opinion in the light of later events indicates a dis honest ambition for consistency or prescience, and is one of the most insidious forms of historical forgery. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Prose Composition Part I contains, in graded lessons, the principal points of Greek syntax, the unusual and non-essential being purposely omitted. These lessons are designed for use at the beginning of the second year's study of Greek, thereby serving as a partial review of the first year's work and as an introduction to the composition work in connection with the reading of Xenophon's Anabasis. Part II contains short, simple English sentences, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. These should be used daily in connection with the reading of the text. Part III contains connected English prose, based on Books I - IV of the Anabasis. This is carefully graded, so that the stu dent who performs faithfully the work outlined here will be able to pass the entrance examination of any of the American colleges. The method of writing Greek at sight used in this book needs a word of explanation. It is the outgrowth of the author's personal experience in the classroom, and his belief that the best results can be obtained only by systematic practice in connection with the regular work. Book A History of Massachusetts in the Civil War Classic Reprint

Download or read book A History of Massachusetts in the Civil War Classic Reprint written by William Schouler and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Massachusetts in the Civil War The original plan of this work would have included a brief narrative of each Massachusetts regiment which had served in the war, and a sketch of the meetings held in the several cities and towns in the Commonwealth to encourage recruiting, and to raise money and provide for the families of the soldiers. I soon found it was impossible to carry out this plan so as to do any thing like justice to the subjects. The mass of papers, letters, and reports bearing upon them placed in my hands, convinced me that one volume should he devoted exclusively to the three years' regiments, and one to the cities and towns. There are several thousand letters in the files of the Governor, Adjutant-General, and Surgeon-General, written from the front by officers and enlisted men, which contain information both interesting and valuable; and many more arc doubtless in the possession of the families of those who served in the war. From these and other sources, material can be furnished to make an interesting volume; and it is due to the veteran regiments that it should be written. I have received new and valuable material from nearly every city and town in the Commonwealth, showing what was done by them in carrying on the war; and from this could be compiled a work which would reflect the highest honor upon the municipalities of this Commonwealth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The European Commonwealth: Problems Historical and Diplomatic The essays contained in this volume represent a selection from a much larger number contributed to quarterly and monthly Reviews during the last four years. They have been selected because, though not originally designed as steps in a coherent argument, they seem to possess a certain measure of unity and consistency. With one exception all have been written.since the outbreak of the war, and the single excep tion (chapter III) stands in at least as close a relation to recent events as the rest. Suggested though they were by successive aspects of the great struggle in which Europe and the world have been involved, the essays are the fruit of studies which have claimed a large portion of my time during the last thirty years. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Problem of the Commonwealth The shorter report is now given to the public on the sole responsibility of the writer himself, because no other way was apparent in which it could be submitted to their judgment. Throughout he has worked in the light cast by the many sided criticisms of the Round Table groups whose numerous members re ect every shade of Opinion. Without these materials the report could never have been Written in its present form; but the writer himself has, of necessity, bad to decide what to reject and hat to accept. He has no authority for stating, therefore, that the report represents any opinion but his own. The best materials, indeed, have often been furnished by colleagues who would hesitate to accept his con elusions as a whole or even in part. It is for that reason that he alone can make himself responsible for its issue to the public, who are invited to judge its conclusions purely in the light of the facts and reasons upon which they are based. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A “thoroughly researched [and] historically enlightening” account of how the Commonwealth of Virginia split in two in the midst of war (Civil War News). “West Virginia was the child of the storm.” —Mountaineer historian and Civil War veteran Maj. Theodore F. Lang As the Civil War raged, the northwestern third of the Commonwealth of Virginia finally broke away in 1863 to form the Union’s 35th state. Seceding from Secession chronicles those events in an unprecedented study of the social, legal, military, and political factors that converged to bring about the birth of West Virginia. President Abraham Lincoln, an astute lawyer in his own right, played a critical role in birthing the new state. The constitutionality of the mechanism by which the new state would be created concerned the president, and he polled every member of his cabinet before signing the bill. Seceding from Secession includes a detailed discussion of the 1871 U.S. Supreme Court decision Virginia v. West Virginia, in which former Lincoln cabinet member Salmon Chase presided as chief justice over the court that decided the constitutionality of the momentous event. Grounded in a wide variety of sources and including a foreword by Frank J. Williams, former Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court and Chairman Emeritus of the Lincoln Forum, this book is indispensable for anyone interested in American history.

Book History of the Commonwealth of England Vol 1

Download or read book History of the Commonwealth of England Vol 1 written by William Godwin and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-27 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Commonwealth of England, Vol. 1: From Its Commencement, to the Restoration of Charles the Second There is no part of the history of this island which has been so inadequately treated, as the characters and acts of those leaders, who had for the most part the direction of the public affairs of England from 1640 to 1660. The men who figured during the Interregnum, were, immediately after the Restoration, spoken of with horror, and their memoirs were composed after the manner of the Newgate Calendar. What was begun from party-rage, has been continued from indolence. No research has been exercised; no public measures have been traced to their right authors; even the succession of judges, public officers, and statesmen, has been left in impenetrable confusion.
