Book Common Sense vs the World

Download or read book Common Sense vs the World written by Ronald J. Plachno and published by Ronald J. Plachno. This book was released on 2022-02-06 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this 21st century, we are engulfed by tidal waves and tsunamis of information. Television, Internet, Public Speakers, and other media can either bring us great knowledge that the world has never seen before this time in history, or just give us instead false messages. Business commercials want us to buy their products, and political commercials want our votes. Added to this, some of the media may disagree so much as to say opposite seeming things. Clearly, when some news sources say opposite things, logically they all cannot be right. In fact, it is slightly possible that perhaps none of them are simply correct. How to survive in this confusion and still seek wisdom? While some people will simply believe what they hear, from one source, or multiple sources, others of us want more. And we have something more powerful than the media tidal waves. We can choose to be open minded and to think for ourselves. Many people seem to doubt the power of the human mind, and even their own thinking abilities. However, I find human thinking power often much greater than many people might imagine. There is perhaps more truth, more logic power, more ethics and morality in our own thinking than is easily available in the media. Trust in yourself. While there are some logic examples in this book, they are not the point. You may begin your own thinking, or have better inside information, and reach a different conclusion, and that is more than okay. That gives us thinking people something to discuss respectfully. The important thing is how we each can "Learn how to learn," and then perhaps become continuous students for our entire lives and seek wisdom. I find that people who achieve being open minded and think are often the brightest, the most fun to talk to, and also seldom are given to the disrespect and hate so prevalent in today’s society. And best wishes - Ron Plachno

Book Everything Is Obvious

Download or read book Everything Is Obvious written by Duncan J. Watts and published by Crown Currency. This book was released on 2011-03-29 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By understanding how and when common sense fails, we can improve our understanding of the present and better plan for the future. Drawing on the latest scientific research, along with a wealth of historical and contemporary examples, Watts shows how common sense reasoning and history conspire to mislead us into believing that we understand more about the world of human behavior than we do; and in turn, why attempts to predict, manage, or manipulate social and economic systems so often go awry. It seems obvious, for example, that people respond to incentives; yet policy makers and managers alike frequently fail to anticipate how people will respond to the incentives they create. Social trends often seem to be driven by certain influential people; yet marketers have been unable to identify these “influencers” in advance. And although successful products or companies always seem in retrospect to have succeeded because of their unique qualities, predicting the qualities of the next hit product or hot company is notoriously difficult even for experienced professionals. Watts' argument has important implications in politics, business, and marketing, as well as in science and everyday life.

Book Everything is Obvious

Download or read book Everything is Obvious written by Duncan J. Watts and published by Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2011-07-01 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why is the Mona Lisa the most famous painting in the world? Why did Facebook succeed when other social networking sites failed? Did the surge in Iraq really lead to less violence? And does higher pay incentivize people to work harder? If you think the answers to these questions are a matter of common sense, think again. As sociologist and network science pioneer Duncan Watts explains in this provocative book, the explanations that we give for the outcomes that we observe in life-explanations that seem obvious once we know the answer-are less useful than they seem. Watts shows how commonsense reasoning and history conspire to mislead us into thinking that we understand more about the world of human behavior than we do; and in turn, why attempts to predict, manage, or manipulate social and economic systems so often go awry. Only by understanding how and when common sense fails can we improve how we plan for the future, as well as understand the present-an argument that has important implications in politics, business, marketing, and even everyday life.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Common Sense Revolution is a call for reclaiming our common sense as a species. This book highlights some of the more relevant issues that face humanity and the book's authors are providing some common sense solutions to these issues, first and foremost being a call to develop a sense of species common sense which has been eroded almost into non-existence. Collectively, we face a multitude of problems and this book is by no means exhaustive in bringing all of them to light, but instead focuses on issues that are prevalent worldwide, most particularly in Western technological societies. Humanity has been systematically divided into so many opposing camps that our very survival as a species is threatened in the midst of a very contrived destruction of our cultures. The destruction of any real common sense based on finding common ground between the Earth's inhabitants poses the greatest threat humanity have ever faced. This book not only focuses on certain problems that face the world as a whole, but also points out who is behind the destruction of world cultures and what their ultimate agenda is. These entities are not all-powerful and the authors feel that a major infusion of common sense to the population at large can offer the solutions to the hidden tyranny that is revealed in this book. You are not powerless and this book provides a way out of the tyrannical quagmire provided people can and will find the self-motivation to turn it all around.

Book Return to Common Sense

Download or read book Return to Common Sense written by William Edward Skokos and published by Tate Publishing. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There has been an assault on conservative based values by the liberal left; this situation has only been exacerbated by moderate Republicans who have in some cases refused to take a stand. Even the Republican leadership has been timid in engaging the left and holding firm to their moral high ground. Common Sense Conservatism is the antidote for all that troubles our great nation. We must allow Common Sense to dictate our actions if we ever hope to save our way of life from those who wish to destroy America and transform it into a second rate power. What is it in a person's life that sets forth a conservative outlook? Here William Edward Skokos allows us a peak into his experiences for the key to that conservatism. He takes on the policies of both the left and the right as he provides a provocative and well informed explanation of the origins of these policies and what needs to be done in order to turn the tide and revitalize America. His belief and faith in the American people is the key element which he believes will ensure the continuation of the American dream.

Book The Sovereignty Solution

Download or read book The Sovereignty Solution written by Anna Simmons and published by Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2011-10-01 with total page 241 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Sovereignty Solution is not an Establishment national security strategy. Instead, it describes what the U.S. could actually do to restore order to the world without having to engage in either global policing or nation-building. Currently there is no coherent plan that addresses questions like: If terrorists were to strike Chicago tomorrow, what would we do? When Chicago is burning, whom would we target? How would we respond? There is nothing in place and no strategy on the horizon to either reassure the American public or warn the world: attack us, and this is what you can expect. In this book, a Naval Postgraduate School professor and her Special Forces coauthors offer a radical yet commonsensical approach to recalibrating global security. Their book discusses what the United States could actually do to restore order to the world without having to engage in either global policing or nation-building. Two tracks to their strategy are presented: strengthening state responsibility abroad and strengthening the social fabric at home. The authors’ goal is to provoke a serious debate that addresses the gaps and disconnects between what the United States says and what it does, how it wants to be perceived, and how it is perceived. Without leaning left or right, they hope to draw many people into the debate and force Washington to rethink what it sends service men and women abroad to do.

Book excerpt: A NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER A business leader and esteemed economic thinker outlines simple solutions to America’s five most pressing public policy issues, from healthcare to education to inequality. America today confronts a host of urgent problems, many of them seemingly intractable, but some we are entirely capable of solving. In Five Easy Theses, James M. Stone presents specific, common-sense solutions to a handful of our most pressing challenges, showing how simple it would be to shore up Social Security, rein in an out-of-control financial sector, reduce inequality, and make healthcare and education better and more affordable. The means are right in front of us, Stone explains, in various policy options that — if implemented — could preserve or enhance government revenue while also channeling the national economy toward the greater good. Accessible and thought provoking, Five Easy Theses reveals that a more democratic, prosperous America is well within our reach.
