Download or read book The Common Sense Philosophy of Spirit Or Psychology Written From Spirit Impression Classic Reprint written by Charles H. Foster and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Common-Sense Philosophy, of Spirit or Psychology, Written From Spirit Impression As the author of this work received what little education he has in the next thing to a log cabin, a single-room schoolhouse, we hope that "we demn folks," at least, will be fair to middling in criticising our poverty in rhetorical flourishes, and will understand that an impressional writer does not receive the Words from his control but that they come to him more in the form of a picture; he sees it, senses it, or just gets it. In fact, it is difficult to describe. You will understand that Truth and facts are not necessarily words which are only a convenience made by man, who is not infallible. It is not in the power of man to give to the world reliable instruction when starting from a point in the Unknown and, we may say, Unknowable. Nearly all philosophers who have given to the world treatises on metaphysics, from Bruno to Kant, have invariably started from the wrong end of the question by assuming as their first postulate that which we think should have been their very last and highest conclusion, namely: A First Case. Book An Inquiry into the Human Mind On the Principles of Common Sense

Download or read book An Inquiry into the Human Mind On the Principles of Common Sense written by Thomas Reid and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2021-04-11 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Reid's Inquiry is one of the classic philosophical texts. Since its first publication in 1764, there have followed no less than forty editions. Yet, not all the writings of Thomas Reid were included in the edition. Reid is known to oppose the views of Descartes, Locke, and Hume. Reid's epistemology is based on human perception. When you see a tree, you don't find reasoning to believe that it is thereby means of rational arguments (Descartes). You don't need to compare your belief that the tree is there with other beliefs derived from experience (Locke). You simply believe it exists because you see it in front of you. The philosopher points out that a skeptic who doubts that the tree is there is being dishonest.

Book Disembodied Spirits and Deanimated Bodies

Download or read book Disembodied Spirits and Deanimated Bodies written by Giovanni Stanghellini and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2004-09-09 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we better understand and treat those suffering from schizophrenia and manic-depressive illnesses? This important new book takes us into the world of those suffering from such disorders. Using self-descriptions, its emphasis is not on how mental health professional's view sufferers, but on how the patients themselves experience their disorder. Central to the book is the idea that schizophrenic persons live like disembodies spirits or deanimated bodies. As disembodies spirits, they feel like abstract entities that contemplate their own existence and the world from outside. As deanimated bodies, schizophrenic people feel deprived of the possibility of living personal experiences - perceptions, thoughts, emotions - as their own. A new volume in the International Perspectives in Philosophy and Psychiatry series, this book will be of great interest to all those working with sufferers from such disorders - helping them to better understand their mental lives and providing important insights into how best to treat them.
