Book A Decade that Made History

Download or read book A Decade that Made History written by Denis Huber and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the fall of the Berlin Wall to Kosovo, covering the unification of Germany, the break-up of the USSR & Yugoslavia, as well as the "velvet divorce" of Czechoslovakia, these last ten years have seen great upheavals in our continent, on a scale probably unparalleled since the fall of the Roman empire. The Council of Europe has played a special role in all of this, as the structure best qualified to welcome the new European democracies, & its membership has soared from 23 to 41 (including 17 central & east European countries) between 1990 & 1999. Truly "a decade which made history" -- & one which the reader is invited to retrace in these pages.

Book Council of Europe Law

Download or read book Council of Europe Law written by Florence Benoît-Rohmer and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2005-01-01 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its foundation, the Council of Europe has established a common legal system for European states, based on democracy, the rule of law and human rights. Its standard-setting texts have helped its members meet the challenges of changing societies and now apply all over Europe given the organisation¿s unprecedented geographical enlargement since 1989. In this connection, the Council of Europe has played a key role in the accession of the new member states to the European Union. The first section of the book deals with the "constitutional" law of the Council of Europe, or its internal statutes in the broad sense. It covers the 1949 Statute, which, along with related texts, lays down the Council¿s aims and determines its membership and operating methods. The second section concerns the role played by the Council of Europe - which has always been very active in standard-setting - in the harmonisation of European states¿ domestic law. The third section situates Council of Europe law in the European context. For instance, it studies the extent to which Council of Europe conventions have been incorporated in domestic law and how Council of Europe law and European Union law co-exist.

Book Armed Conflict and Forcible Displacement

Download or read book Armed Conflict and Forcible Displacement written by Elena Katselli Proukaki and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-03-05 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses the involuntary and arbitrary displacement of individuals resulting from armed conflict and gross human rights violations. It shows that forcible displacement constitutes a serious violation of international law and of fundamental community interests. Armed Conflict and Forcible Displacement provides a critical legal analysis of the contemporary international framework, permeating forcible displacement in these circumstances and explores the rights that individuals possess with specific focus on the right not to be displaced and, where this fails, the right to return home and to receive property restitution. In doing so, this volume marries together different fields of international law and builds on the case studies of Cyprus, Colombia, Cambodia and Syria. While the case studies considered here are far from exhaustive, they are either little explored or present significant challenges due to the magnitude of displacement or contested international jurisprudence. Through this analysis, the volume exposes some of the legal challenges that individuals encounter in being protected from forcible displacement, as well as the legal obstacles that persist in ensuring the return of and the recovery of property by the displaced. It will be of interest to those interested in the fields of international law, human rights law, as well as conflict and war studies.

Book Europe a human enterprise

Download or read book Europe a human enterprise written by Council of Europe and published by Council of Europe. This book was released on 2019-09-19 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 30 stories for 70 years of European history 1949-2019 Founded in Strasbourg in 1949 to unite a continent ravaged by war, the Council of Europe has built a vast area of democratic security that protects 830 million people in 47 countries, from the United Kingdom to Turkey, from the Russian Federation to Portugal and from Iceland to Switzerland. Its core objective is preserving and promoting human rights, democracy and the rule of law. This book covers 70 years of history, during which Europe has changed profoundly, and – this is something we often forget – changed for the better. Our old continent, which was in ruins after the Second World War, found the energy to rise up out of the ashes. The contributions here go back over the highlights of this common history, from the creation of the European flag to the management of democratic and humanitarian crises, through the enlargement to east European countries after the fall of the Berlin Wall. Written by individuals who have worked for, or closely with, the Organisation, it paints a vivid picture – combining anecdotes with turning points in history – of what the Council of Europe has stood for since 1949, and of the values which it must continue to champion to keep the European ideal alive in people’s hearts and minds. The 30 contributions compiled by Denis Huber include accounts by Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Maud de Boer-Buquicchio, Gianni Buquicchio, Bruno Haller, Charles Kohler, Catherine Lalumière, Peter Leuprecht, Alexandre Orlov, Guido Raimondi, Catherine Trautmann, Jacques Warin and Hans Winkler. Preface by Thorbjørn Jagland, Secretary General of the Council of Europe and Gabriella Battaini-Dragoni, Deputy Secretary General of the Council of Europe. Postface by Emmanuel Macron, President of the French Republic.
