The interest and excitement which was shared by officers and men of the two ships over this game was very intense; plenty of leave was given, so the majority of both ships' companies were to be seen in the canteen field watching and betting on the result of the match. Those compelled to remain on board, by duty or otherwise, were quite as excited, and to see their strained, anxious faces as they watched the fluttering signal flag go up, telling how the game was progressing, was at times almost painful to witness. This was mostly on account of the reputation of the ship being at stake. When two ships like these meet, each hailing from a different dep6t--one from Chatham and the other from Plymouth--they are known as East and West country ships, and when together in harbour the greatest rivalry exists as to which shall be the most efficient. Whether it is in performing exercises, evolutions, boat races, matches, or sports of any kind, the Duffoes, as the West countrymen are termed, strain every nerve to beat the Cockneys, and vice versa; so the excitement on these two ships over this game only served to prove the rule. On the following afternoon, Major Clarke and Lieutenant Wild, of the marines, left the " Grafton" for home via the Canadian Pacific Railway, the ship's company cheering them heartily as they left. These two officers had been relieved by Major Chown and Lieutenant Bush. The same evening we learned with the deepest regret of the death of Commander Fair (our late Commander) who died at his residence in England of scarlet fever. Book excerpt: This book examines how the expansion of a steam-powered Royal Navy from the second half of the nineteenth century had wider ramifications across the British Empire. In particular, it considers how steam propulsion made vessels utterly dependent on a particular resource – coal – and its distribution around the world. In doing so, it shows that the ‘coal question’ was central to imperial defence and the protection of trade, requiring the creation of infrastructures that spanned the globe. This infrastructure required careful management, and the processes involved show the development of bureaucracy and the reliance on the ‘contractor state’ to ensure this was both robust and able to allow swift mobilisation in war. The requirement to stop regularly at foreign stations also brought men of the Royal navy into contact with local coal heavers, as well as indigenous populations and landscapes. These encounters and their dissemination are crucial to our understanding of imperial relationships and imaginations at the height of the imperial age.
