Book Australasia 1688 1911 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Australasia 1688 1911 Classic Reprint written by A. Wyatt Tilby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-13 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Australasia, 1688-1911 The present volume, like its predecessors in this work, deals with the foundation of new English settlements by the old British stock. Like the settlements in Canada, but unlike those in the tropics, the colonies in Australia and New Zealand grew into new English nations; the history and circumstances attending that growth and national develop ment, with its divergence from the parent people, are the subject Of the following pages. It has been a task Of no little difficulty to rescue from Old newspaper files, from mildewed forgotten pamphlets, and the tedious records of too often stupid travellers, the original materials on which the present book is largely based. Pro longed research has frequently revealed nothing but literary rubbish but occasionally I have found the crudely expressed letters Of Old travellers quite extraordinarily illuminating in their revelation Of the forces that were moulding the new English society in Australasia. The letter from an emigrant to New Zealand, for instance, which is quoted at the opening Of Book XXII throws considerable light on the social jealousy and class hatred which existed in England, and which largely accounted for the determination to make and keep Australia a democratic country among the free settlers Of the middle nineteenth century. We know what the literate and governing classes thought about the illiterate and governed we have little to show what the governed thought about their governors. The letter in question helps to supply the gap. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Flagships Three Classic Reprint

Download or read book Flagships Three Classic Reprint written by C. E. W. Bean and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-05 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Flagships Three In 1908 the writer published a smaller book dealing with an earlier stage of that same long progress of events, which is the subject of this one. That book was published at a time when a British naval force was the only defence of Australia and the British dominions in the Pacific. And the words quoted above were the opening words of the last chapter in the book - the dream to which it all led up. They may well stand as the first words of the first chapter in this one. For the dream they describe is coming true, word by word line by line, in such fashion as neither he who dreamed it nor anyone else could ever have hoped to behold. Within five years it has fallen to the writer to recast and extend the same story in order to add to it an already accomplished sequel. For this book recounts the birth of the latest of a very famous and ancient and heroic line of N avies - the coming of a first-born to the British Navy. Or if the United States Navy should be counted as the Royal Navy's first child, then it deals with the coming of the second child. It is with those two elders, and, of course, especially with the great mother navy, of which it really forms an outlying member, that the Royal Australian Navy will always be compared. The writer has used such opportunities as have come his way to obtain some insight into the three of them. Book Narrative of the Visit of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh to the Colony of Victoria Australia Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 242 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Narrative of the Visit of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh to the Colony of Victoria, Australia Such being the case, the compiler was led to the conclusion that an event which had evoked more enthusiasm in the breasts of Australians, of all ages and conditions, than any other occurrence in the history of these colonies, was worthy of being put into the form of a permanent record. Many of the details given in the following pages may be pronounced as tri ing, uninteresting, or of no importance to the public at large: such doubtless is perfectly true of much that is narrated herein, but the compiler risks the loss of patience by the general reader, rather than do injustice to the loyalty of those whose means, or distant situation from the scenes of the Royal festivities, prevented their taking a prominent part in the public rejoicings.
