Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Comic History of England In commencing this work, the object of the Author was, as he stated in the Prospectus, to blend amusement with instruction, by serving up, in as palatable a shape as he could, the facts of English History. He pledged himself not to sacrifice the substance to the seasoning; and though he has certainly been a little free in the use of his sauce, he hopes that he has not produced a mere hash on the present occasion. His object has been to furnish something which may be allowed to take its place as a standing dish at the library table, and which, though light, may not be found devoid of nutriment. That food is certainly not the most wholesome which is the heaviest and the least digestible. Though the original design of this History was only to place facts in an amusing light, without a sacrifice of fidelity, it is humbly presumed that truth has rather gained than lost by the mode of treatment that has been adopted. Persons and things, events and characters, have been deprived of their false colouring, by the plain and matter-of-fact spirit in which they have been approached by the writer of the "Comic History of England." Book Comic History of England

Download or read book Comic History of England written by Bill Nye and published by . This book was released on 2020-04-18 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the glad whinny of the first unicorn down to the tip end of the nineteenth century, the history of Great Britain has been dear to her descendants in every land, 'neath every sky. But to write a truthful and honest history of any country the historian should, that he may avoid overpraise and silly and mawkish sentiment, reside in a foreign country, or be so situated that he may put on a false moustache and get away as soon as the advance copies have been sent to the printers. The writer of these pages, though of British descent, will, in what he may say, guard carefully against permitting that fact to swerve him for one swift moment from the right. England even before Christ, as now, was a sort of money centre, and thither came the Phoenicians and the Carthaginians for their tin.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bill Nye's Comic History of England The readers of this volume will share our regret that the preface cannot be written by Mr. Nye, who would have introduced his volume with a characteristically appropriate and humorous foreword in perfect harmony with the succeeding narrative. We need only say that this work is in the author's best vein, and will prove not only amusing, but instructive as well; for the events, successions, dates, etc., are correct, and the trend of actual facts is adhered to. Of course, these facts are "embellished," as Mr. Nye would say, by his fancy, and the leading historical characters are made to play in fantastic roles. Underneath all, however, a shrewd knowledge of human nature is betrayed, which unmasks motives and reveals the true inwardness of men and events with a humorous fidelity. The unfortunate illness to which Mr. Nye finally succumbed prevented the completion of his history beyond the marriage of Henry VIII. to Anne Boleyn. Book excerpt: But while the antiquarians have experienced no obstruction from others, they have managed to come into collision among themselves, and have knocked their heads together with considerable violence in the process of what they call exploring the dark ages of our early history. We are not unwilling to take a walk amid the monuments of antiquity, which we should be sorry to run against or tumble over for want of proper light; and we shall therefore only venture so far as we can have the assistance of the bull's-eye of truth, rejecting altogether the allurements of the Will o' the Wisp of mere probability. It is not because former historians have gone head oyer heels into the gulf of conjecture, that we are to turn a desperate somersault after them. *

Book Cassell s Illustrated History of England Vol 1

Download or read book Cassell s Illustrated History of England Vol 1 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-06 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cassell's Illustrated History of England, Vol. 1: From the Earliest Period to the Reign of Edward the Fourth HE preceding edition of this History has been most carefully corrected and revised, and the Publishers are thankful that the present one has not failed of a success more than equal to that which had attended its predecessor. The expecta tion which led them originally to publish and now to issue this revised edition of a history of this great country so as to meet the want of the great masses which compose so large a portion of it, has not been disappointed. It is almost as vain to write the praises of history as it is unnecessary to write its apology. Whatever doubts may be entertained as to the merits of the classics as a means of education, history stands above all suspicion, and is pre-eminent not only as a means, but even as an end of knowledge. We may regard history as in some sort the story of ourselves under circumstances different from those in which it finds us; which circumstances, however, time often repeats with remarkable similitude of detail. It is, indeed, more than this; it is the narrative of national as well as of individual life, and - in a higher aspect still - it is the narrative of the great human race. But even if we look on it only as a vast collection of biographies, we can hardly exaggerate the importance of its voice to us. It teaches its votary something of himself and of his kind which the profoundest philosopher without it could never know. If we except Nature and Revelation, what else is there beyond the domain of history? Indeed, it is the complement of these, and with these fills up all experience and all thought. But if this be true of universal history, it is true in a sense more confined and yet more intense of the history of our own country. The exceeding interest of this latter will let none of us escape. It is our text-book in childhood, but we have not grasped its Wisdom or exhausted its pleasure in age. We delight in it, not merely because it tells of our own fathers and our own homes, but because it, more than any other, presents the broad surface of the pe0ple; because it is concerned, not only with kings, and statesmen, and warriors, but with the toilers at the plough, and at the counter, and at the desk - with the great middle class, whose growth in extent and power forms so large a portion of its page; because it exhibits a unity of design and a continuity of action which is not so patent, even if it exists, elsewhere; because it leads by marked gradations through the practical logic of great principles to that national product which we now enjoy with so much pride and satisfaction; because it is the voice of a people whose language is more wide-spread and more potent in the ears of friends and foes than that of any tongue on earth, and is enriched with science and with song to which few others can aspire. Book The Pictorial History of England Vol 6 of 6

Download or read book The Pictorial History of England Vol 6 of 6 written by George Lillie Craik and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Pictorial History of England, Vol. 6 of 6: Being a History of the People, as Well as a History of the Kingdom In some respects, however, Caroline would have been a promising subject for the satirist; for she affected to combine the characters of a philosopher and a princess royal and proudly royal, a beauty and a wit, a metaphysician and a divine - though, in divinity, her notions were scarcely considered strictly orthodox. Her levees, says Archdeacon Core, were a strange picture of the motley cha reeter and manners of a queen and a learned woman. She received company while she was at her toilet; prayers, and sometimes a semen, were read, learned men and divines were intermixed with courtiers and ladies of the household; the conversation turned on metaphysical subjects, blended with repartees, sallies of mirth, and the tittle-tattle of a drawing-room. On the table, says Lord Mahon, perhaps, lay heaped together the newest ode by Stephen Duck upon her beauty, her last letter from Leibnitz upon free-will, and a most high-wrought panegyric of Dr. Clarke on her 'inimitable sweetness of temper, ' 'impartial love of truth, ' and very particular and uncommon degree of knowledge, even on matters of the most abstract speculation.' 1 She took great delight in making theologians dispute knotty points in her presence; in perplexing them with questions con cerning the op ite doctrines of the different Christian churc es, and in carrying on a corre spondence with them by means of her bedchamber woman Mrs. (legion, afterwards Lady Sundon. In short, her h was never free of divines and philosophers, poets, and authors of all descriptions; and it may be that all this did not tend to create in her husband a love of books and letters and literary men. George, who loved his army extra vagantly, and who was nick-named by the J acohites the Captain, or the Little Captain, would rather discourse with a comet of horse or with a good corporal of grenadiers, than with all the Leibnitzes, Clarkes, Gays, and' Popes in the world. But mixed with these femme savante absurdities, there was a good fund of homely sense, discretion, and dignity; and Carolina's moral character was without a blemish. During ten tars she was more king than her husband, who t 'dom went wrong except when led contrary to her advice or suggestion. Yet she was never arrogant, or seemed self-willed, to her husband.
