Perfect for fans of Raina Telgemeier and Gene Luen Yang, New Kid is a timely, honest graphic novel about starting over at a new school where diversity is low and the struggle to fit in is real, from award-winning author-illustrator Jerry Craft. Seventh grader Jordan Banks loves nothing more than drawing cartoons about his life. But instead of sending him to the art school of his dreams, his parents enroll him in a prestigious private school known for its academics, where Jordan is one of the few kids of color in his entire grade. As he makes the daily trip from his Washington Heights apartment to the upscale Riverdale Academy Day School, Jordan soon finds himself torn between two worlds—and not really fitting into either one. Can Jordan learn to navigate his new school culture while keeping his neighborhood friends and staying true to himself? • Author : Jason Boog
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2014-07-15
  • ISBN : 1476749817
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Born Reading written by Jason Boog and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2014-07-15 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A program for parents and professionals on how to raise kids who love to read, featuring interviews with childhood development experts, advice from librarians, tips from authors and children’s book publishers, and reading recommendations for kids from birth up to age five. Every parent wants to give his or her child a competitive advantage. In Born Reading, publishing insider (and new dad) Jason Boog explains how that can be as simple as opening a book. Studies have shown that interactive reading—a method that creates dialogue as you read together—can raise a child’s IQ by more than six points. In fact, interactive reading can have just as much of a determining factor on a child’s IQ as vitamins and a healthy diet. But there’s no book that takes the cutting-edge research on interactive reading and shows parents, teachers, and librarians how to apply it to their day-to-day lives with kids, until now. Born Reading provides step-by-step instructions on interactive reading and advice for developing your child’s interest in books from the time they are born. Boog has done the research, talked with the leading experts in child development, and worked with them to compile the “Born Reading Essential Books” lists, offering specific titles tailored to the interests and passions of kids from birth to age five. But reading can take many forms—print books as well as ebooks and apps—and Born Reading also includes tips on how to use technology the right way to help (not hinder) your child’s intellectual development. Parents will find advice on which educational apps best supplement their child’s development, when to start introducing digital reading to their child, and how to use tech to help create the readers of tomorrow. Born Reading will show anyone who loves kids how to make sure the children they care about are building a powerful foundation in literacy from the beginning of life.

Book The Global Kid

  • Pages : 30 pages

Download or read book The Global Kid written by Maha Hosain Aziz and published by . This book was released on 2016-04 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Welcome to the world's first comic book about global politics! I'm a professor (NYU), author (www.futureworldorder.org) and blogger (Medium.com) of global risk and prediction who also consults on this topic. But my childhood dream was in fact to be a cartoonist. From 2013-2016, I revisited this passion for cartooning after a 20+ year break, creating the superhero character of 14 year old Sami who lives in different countries with his family (much like I did - 7 countries by age 14) and observes political problems (much like I do in my day job). In Spring 2016, I finally launched my educational comic book about politics, The Global Kid, which went on to win five awards - the 2016 Wonder Woman Award in NY, the 2017 WEF Excellence Award in Iceland, the 2017 INSPAD Peace Award in Pakistan, the 2019 Educator's Challenge in Sweden and the UK; and the 2019 Education Award in Belgium. It was also featured at the Nov 2018 Paris Peace Forum as a finalist in the Educators Challenge. The Global Kid also inspired several of my blogs which you can read here: https://www.theglobalkid.org/pages/prof-azizs-blog and my 2019 book Future World Order (also available on Amazon). The Global Kid project was entirely crowdfunded by my Indiegogo investors and in 2016-2018 100% of the profits from my comic book went to education non-profits that help youth reach their potential (US-based Global Glimpse and Pakistan-based Developments In Literacy). As of 2019, any profits from my political comic book are being donated to charity Peace & Sport - specifically the memorial fund for my late brother Abid, a lifelong sports aficionado and lifelong supporter of my creativity. The Abid Aziz Fund supports Peace & Sport's "Live Together" program for Syrian refugee youth in Jordan's Za'atari camp. More details here: https://www.peace-sport.org/in-memory-of-abid-aziz/

Book excerpt: A New York Times bestseller If you work hard enough, if you want it enough, if you’re smart and talented and “good enough,” you can do anything. Except get pregnant. Her whole life, Lucy Knisley wanted to be a mother. But when it was finally the perfect time, conceiving turned out to be harder than anything she’d ever attempted. Fertility problems were followed by miscarriages, and her eventual successful pregnancy plagued by health issues, up to a dramatic, near-death experience during labor and delivery. This moving, hilarious, and surprisingly informative memoir, Kid Gloves, not only follows Lucy’s personal transition into motherhood but also illustrates the history and science of reproductive health from all angles, including curious facts and inspiring (and notorious) figures in medicine and midwifery. Whether you’ve got kids, want them, or want nothing to do with them, there’s something in this graphic memoir to open your mind and heart.

Download or read book The Secret Spiral of Swamp Kid written by Kirk Scroggs and published by DC Zoom. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Warning! Anyone caught reading this notebook without my permission will be tossed in the bayou with a rabid snapping turtle! Seriously, I mean it! My name is Russell Weinwright and if you think you've got problems in middle school, try being a half kid, half algae swamp creature who's terrible at sports! It's not easy. I eat sunlight for lunch, I've got duck weed for hair, and I think a frog might be living in my tree trunk arm. I'm literally pond scum! Some kids call me Swamp Kid, but my best friends Charlotte and Preston keep me sane. I wish I could let you read this notebook to get the real scoop on being an eighth-grade outsider (please ignore the doodles and ketchup stains!), but things have gotten a little crazy lately. Men in black are spying on me, my science teacher might be an evil mastermind, and a hulking beast in the bayou may or may not be my super swamp mentor. Believe me, you don't wanna know! Turn back now! This is The Secret Spiral of Swamp Kid by writer and illustrator Kirk Scroggs, and you'll never look at middle school the same way again.

Book Kid Lobotomy Vol 1 A Lad Insane

Join Kid, the proprietor of this fine hotel, as he tries to hold on to his father's business--and his own sanity. Kid, as he's affectionately referred to, is the youngest child of Big Daddy, an aging hotelier with more than his fair share of dark secrets tucked into the corners of the crown jewel of his empire: The Suites, where the guests are in danger of losing much more than their luggage. See, Kid has shed a few (okay, more than a few) brain cells in his day, which naturally makes him qualified to perform a lobotomy or two. And why let those brain bits go to waste when he can use them to help--or unwittingly harm--his patients? Ultimately, Kid hopes to restore some of his sanity. But can he navigate his sister's devious plotting, vivid hallucinations, and his own crumbling mental state to uncover the truth about his cursed lineage and face what runs rampant throughout the torturous hotel hallways? Simply put, you've never read anything like this. You won't be able to look away. Collects issues #1-6 of the ongoing series.
