Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Comedies of John Crowne John Crowne was one of the most productive dramatists of the Restoration time. He attained to a certain distinction both as a writer of tragedies and comedies. His dramatic productions have disappeared from the English stage long ago, his plays are indeed only mentioned as links in the chain of the literary productions of the English poets. Yet his comedies are not devoid of a certain merit, and his tragedies deserve to be noticed. The dialogue in his comedies is often overflowing with wit and eloquence, and when reading his tragedies we are frequently struck by the powerful and poetical language. Langbaine, in his account of the English Dramatic Poets, Oxon 1691, 12, advances the following opinion of our poet, speaking of him as "a person, now living, who has attempted all sorts of dramatic poetry with different success... If I may be allowed to speak my sentiments," he says, "I think his genius seems fittest for Comedy, though possibly his Tragedies are no ways contemptible, of all which, in my weak judgment, his 'Destruction of Jerusalem' seems the best." Then comes an enumeration of Crowne's plays up to 1691. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Crowne: His Life and Dramatic Works The present study consists of three parts. In the first I have endeavored to trace the life of Crowne more minutely than has hitherto been attempted. In the second I have treated of Crowne's plays in the order of their writing. Here it has been my purpose to discuss in connection with each play the date of production and publication, the circumstances connected with the writing, the sources, and the manner in which they are used. Finally, in the third part I have attempted a critical summary of Crowne's tragedies and comedies and an estimate of his importance as a playwright. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Book of Cambridge Verse Nevertheless, after all deductions have been made, how much true poetry is yet left! He must be hard to please who cannot find intense enjoyment in the Eclogues of Phineas Fletcher, in Cowley's epitaph on Harvey, in the Miltonic stanzas of Gray's Installation Ode, in a score of other pieces, grave, quaint, or classical in their allusive ness of phrasing. Especially grateful must we be to the number of poets, of exquisite feeling and easy mastery of form, who during the last fifty or sixty years have enriched the language with delicate and elegant verse, from which it has been only too difficult to choose because its quantity is so great and its merit so even. Of this we trust we have given a tolerably adequate selection but it would have been easy to multiply it fourfold. Book excerpt: This carefully crafted ebook: “The Comedy of Errors (The Unabridged Play) + The Classic Biography: The Life of William Shakespeare” is formatted for your eReader with a functional and detailed table of contents. The Comedy of Errors is one of William Shakespeare's earliest plays, believed to have been written between 1592 and 1594. It tells the story of two sets of identical twins that were accidentally separated at birth. Antipholus of Syracuse and his servant, Dromio of Syracuse, arrive in Ephesus, which turns out to be the home of their twin brothers, Antipholus of Ephesus and his servant, Dromio of Ephesus. When the Syracusans encounter the friends and families of their twins, a series of wild mishaps based on mistaken identities lead to wrongful beatings, a near-seduction, the arrest of Antipholus of Ephesus, and false accusations of infidelity, theft, madness, and demonic possession. Life of William Shakespeare is a biography of William Shakespeare by the eminent critic Sidney Lee. This book was one of the first major biographies of the Bard of Avon. It was published in 1898, based on the article contributed to the Dictionary of National Biography. William Shakespeare (1564 – 1616) was an English poet and playwright, widely regarded as the greatest writer in the English language and the world's pre-eminent dramatist. He is often called England's national poet and the "Bard of Avon". His extant works, including some collaborations, consist of about 38 plays, 154 sonnets, two long narrative poems, and a few other verses, the authorship of some of which is uncertain. Sir Sidney Lee (1859 – 1926) was an English biographer and critic. He was a lifelong scholar and enthusiast of Shakespeare. His article on Shakespeare in the fifty-first volume of the Dictionary of National Biography formed the basis of his Life of William Shakespeare. This full-length life is often credited as the first modern biography of the poet.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from John Dene of Toronto: A Comedy of Whitehall John Dene thanked the policeman, gave the Cigar in his mouth a twist with his tongue, and walked along Lower Regent Street towards Waterloo Place. At the bottom of the Duke of York's steps, he crossed the road, turned to the left and paused. Nowhere could he see an entrance sufficiently impressive to suggest the Admiralty. Just ahead was a dingy and unpretentious doorway with a policeman standing out side; but that he decided could not be the entrance to the Admiralty. As he gazed at it, a fair-haired girl came out of the doorway and walked towards him. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
