Book excerpt: CRRES is a program to study the space environment which surrounds Earth and the effects of space radiation on modern satellite electronic systems. The satellite will carry an array of active experiments including chemical releases and a complement of sophisticated scientific instruments to accomplish these objectives. Other chemical release active experiments will be performed with suborbital rocket probes. These chemical releases will paint the magnetic and electric fields in Earthspace with clouds of glowing ions. Earthspace will be a laboratory, and the releases will be studied with an extensive network of ground-, aircraft-, and satellite-based diagnostic instruments. Unspecified Center ...

Book excerpt: As a result of natural processes, plasma clouds are often injected into the magnetosphere. These chemical releases can be used to study many aspects of such injections. When a dense plasma is injected into the inner magnetosphere, it is expected to take up the motion of the ambient plasma. However, it has been observed in previous releases at moderate altitudes that the cloud preserved its momentum for some time following the release and that parts of the cloud peeled off from the main cloud presumable due to the action of an instability. As one moves outward into the magnetosphere, the mirror force becomes less dominant and the initial conditions following a release are dominated by the formation of a diamagnetic cavity since the initial plasma pressure from the injected Ba ions is greater than the magnetic field energy density. A previous high-altitude release (31,300 km) showed this to be the case initially, but at later times there was evidence for acceleration of the Ba plasma to velocities corresponding to 60,000 K. This effect is not explained. This series of experiments is therefore designed to inject plasma clouds into the magnetosphere under widely varying conditions of magnetic field strength and ambient plasma density. In this way the coupling of injected clouds to the ambient plasma and magnetic field, the formation of striations due to instabilities, and possible heating and acceleration of the injected Ba plasma can be studied over a wide range of magnetosphere parameters. Adding to the scientific yield will be the availability of measurements for the DOD/SPACERAD instruments which can monitor plasma parameters, electric and magnetic fields, and waves before, during and after the releases. Book CRRES SPACERAD Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite Space Radiation Effects Program Experiment Descriptions

Download or read book CRRES SPACERAD Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite Space Radiation Effects Program Experiment Descriptions written by M. S. Gussenhoven and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Space Radiation Effects (SPACERAD) Program is a comprehensive space program whose purposes, among other things, are to: (a) measure radiation-induced single event upsets (SEUs) and total-dose degradation of state-of-the-art microelectronic devices (to include VHSIC and GaAs devices) in a known space environment; (b) space qualify advanced technology microelectronic devices for operational DOD satellite systems; and (c) update the static models of the radiation belts and develop the first dynamic models of the high energy particle populations in the near-Earth environment. To accomplish these goals, AFGL has developed a space experiment complement consisting of a microelectronics experiment package (MEP), dosimeters, energetic-particle detectors, space plasma detectors, and wave and field (electric and magnetic) instruments. The experiments are to be flown as a package on the Joint Air Force/NASA Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES) in FY87. The MEP will record SEUs and radiation degradation as a function of orbital position, particle type, device geometry, device technology, device material, device operating conditions, etc. The other instrumentation will be used to simultaneously measure the space environment. This document gives a brief description of the SPACERAD Program and the instruments to be flown on CRRES. Keywords: Space radiation; Space experiments; Energetic particle; Protons; Electrons; Ions; Spacecraft charging; Radiation damage.

Book A History of the Space Radiation Effects SPACERAD Program for the Joint USAF NASA CRRES Mission Part 1 From the Origins Through the Launch 1981 1990

Download or read book A History of the Space Radiation Effects SPACERAD Program for the Joint USAF NASA CRRES Mission Part 1 From the Origins Through the Launch 1981 1990 written by and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history narrates the Space Radiation Effects (SPACERAD) Program from its origins in 1981 through the launch of the SPACERAD experiments on the USAF/NASA Combined Release/Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES) on July 25, 1990 and the initial data results in October 1990. The SPACERAD Program comprised a coordinated schedule of space-and-ground testing of state-of-the-art microelectronics, together with new satellite measurements of the Earth's radiation belts. The goals for the program were to produce improved standards and procedures for ground-testing future space microelectronics and new dynamic models of the radiation belts. The history discusses programmatic, management and funding issues that arose in the course of its realization.

Book Analysis of Crres Pha Data for Low energy deposition Events

Download or read book Analysis of Crres Pha Data for Low energy deposition Events written by National Aeronautics and Space Administration and published by . This book was released on 2018-08-29 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This effort analyzed the low-energy deposition Pulse Height Analyzer (PHA) data from the Combined Release and Radiation Effects Satellite (CRRES). The high-energy deposition data had been previously analyzed and shown to be in agreement with spallation reactions predicted by the Clemson University Proton Interactions in Devices (CUPID) simulation model and existing environmental and orbit positioning models (AP-8 with USAF B-L coordinates). The scope of this project was to develop and improve the CUPID model by increasing its range to lower incident particle energies, and to expand the modeling to include contributions from elastic interactions. Before making changes, it was necessary to identify experimental data suitable for benchmarking the codes; then, the models to the CRRES PHA data could be applied. It was also planned to test the model against available low-energy proton or neutron SEU data obtained with mono-energetic beams.McNulty, P.
