Download or read book Micromechanism of Cleavage Fracture of Metals written by Jianhong Chen and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2014-09-15 with total page 488 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book the authors focus on the description of the physical nature of cleavage fracture to offer scientists, engineers and students a comprehensive physical model which vividly describes the cleavage microcracking processes operating on the local (microscopic) scale ahead of a defect. The descriptions of the critical event and the criteria for cleavage fracture will instruct readers in how to control the cleavage processes and optimize microstructure to improve fracture toughness of metallic materials. - Physical (mechanical) processes of cleavage fracture operating on the local (microscopic) scale, with the focus on the crack nucleation and crack propagation across the particle/grain and grain/grain boundaries - Critical event, i.e., the stage of greatest difficulty in forming the microcrack, which controls the cleavage fracture - Criteria triggering the cleavage microcracking with incorporation of the actions of macroscopic loading environment into the physical model - Effects of microstructure on the cleavage fracture, including the effects of grain size, second phase particles and boundary - Comprehensive description of the brittle fracture emerging in TiAl alloys and TiNi memory alloys

Book Effect of Warm Prestressing on Fatigue Crack Growth Curves at Low Temperatures

Download or read book Effect of Warm Prestressing on Fatigue Crack Growth Curves at Low Temperatures written by A. Bussiba and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low-temperature fatigue crack extension is studied in precracked single-edge-notched specimens of AISI 4340 steel. Steady-state crack extension in tension-tension fatigue and cyclic loading in conjunction with warm prestressing (WPS) are particularly emphasized. Effects of WPS on the fatigue crack growth curve are demonstrated and discussed. Special attention is given to the cleavage fracture mode, which dominates the features of the fatigue crack growth curve below the ductile-brittle transition (DBT) temperature. In AISI 4340 steel, which is characterized by DBT, WPS affects the alternative fracture mode and therefore alters the lower and upper bound values Kth and KIfc, respectively. For a more complete view, the behavior of AISI 304 stainless steel is discussed. The experimental results at low temperatures are mainly interpreted in terms of a transition in the cumulative crack tip damage process, induced by characteristic values of the stress intensity range amplitudes (?K).

Book Effect of Residual Stress on Fatigue Fracture of Case Hardened Steels An Analytical Model

Download or read book Effect of Residual Stress on Fatigue Fracture of Case Hardened Steels An Analytical Model written by DE. Diesburg and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The influence of residual stress at and near the surface on fatigue life was modeled by utilizing linear elastic fracture mechanics to quantify the stress intensity change due to the residual stress. The initiation and the propagation stages of the fatigue cracking process were distinguished using the concept of the threshold stress intensity amplitude; with a constant load amplitude, the propagation stage commences from the crack length at which the maximum fatigue stress intensity is equal to the threshold value. The influence of residual stress is to increase or decrease the crack length which corresponds to the initiation stage, thereby controlling the fatigue crack initiation life.

Book Effects of Warm Pre Stressing on the Transition Toughness Behavior of an A533 Grade B Class 1 Pressure Vessel Steel

Download or read book Effects of Warm Pre Stressing on the Transition Toughness Behavior of an A533 Grade B Class 1 Pressure Vessel Steel written by P. Birkett and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is now well recognized that pre-loading a ferritic steel structure at a temperature above its ductile-brittle transition range may result in an effective increase in toughness on loading at a lower temperature where fracture occurs by cleavage. Of particular significance is the fact that cleavage failure has never been reported in a cracked structure at a low temperature, following pre-loading at a higher temperature, for cases where the applied crack driving force was constant or decreasing with time. This is the basis of the so-called "conservative" warm pre-stressing (WPS) principle. Although this principle is of considerable practical importance, much work is still needed to further understand all aspects of WPS phenomena in order that analysts be better able to assess their effects quantitatively in safety cases.
