Book excerpt: Significance - Over the past several decades, the prevalence of overweight and obesity has risen dramatically in all ages and genders in the United States. An increase in overweight/obesity has been observed in women and succeeding in sustainable weight loss can be challenging. Much research focuses on the paired regimens of sleep and exercise, sleep and dietary intake, and exercise and dietary intake as the tools to lose weight and maintain a healthy and stable weight. Very few studies examine all three factors and their combined effect on overweight/obesity. Purpose/Aim - The purpose of this paper is to further understand the combined impact of sleep, exercise, and dietary intake on preventing and overcoming overweight/obesity in women age 23-65 years old. Methods - Observing this population's behaviors and attitudes with regard to following an RD-approved regimen of eight hours of sleep per night, at least thirty minutes per day of moderate to high intensity exercise, and a hypocaloric Mediterranean diet for twelve months will allow for comparison of weight loss to those who only follow the diet and exercise protocols of the regimen. Expected Results/Interpretation - Women who adhere to the regimen with three components combined are expected to experience more weight loss than those who do not follow all three of the components. The results are expected to indicate that a more holistic and comprehensive approach to a healthy and sustainable weight loss plan is more successful for women who find difficulty in losing weight by adjusting sleep, exercise, or diet alone. Conclusion/Implications - Putting into context the current literature as well as further analyzing the impact of the regimen with the three components of sleep, exercise, and diet combined in overweight and mildly obese women may help in future counseling and recommendations on ways to improve overall health and maintenance of a healthy weight.

Sleep has been associated with overweight and obesity. One potential mechanism by which sleep may lead to overweight and obesity is through positive energy balance (i.e. energy intake exceeding expenditure). There are few studies examining the impact of sleep timing (onset and wake time) on diet and exercise. In a cross sectional study, we examined associations between sleep timing and diet quality, and in separate models, between sleep timing and meeting the 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans among the participants of the UMass Vitamin D Status Study. A total of 140 young women (aged 18 to 30 years) were grouped into four sleep timing categories based on the median of participants' sleep onset and wake time (Early sleep-Early wake, Early sleep-Late wake, Late sleep-Early wake, Late sleep-Late wake). Multivariable linear regression and multivariable logistic regression were used to model the associations between the sleep timing categories and diet quality, and sleep timing and meeting the National Physical Activity Guidelines, respectively. Participants in the Early sleep-Early wake group had the highest diet quality scores and were more likely to meet the National Physical Activity Guidelines compared to the other sleep timing categories. To our knowledge, this was the first study in the U.S. examining sleep timing and diet quality and physical activity among young women. In conclusion, the old adage early to bed, early to rise appears to be related to higher diet quality and meeting physical activity guidelines.

A lack of activity increases the risk of heart disease, colon and breast cancer, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, osteoporosis, anxiety and depression and others diseases. Emerging literature has suggested that in terms of mortality, the global population health burden of physical inactivity approaches that of cigarette smoking. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.
