Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin the Columbian Institute Museum the Promotion of Arts and Sciences a Washington Society of 1816-1838, Which Established: A Museum and Botanic Garden Under Government Patronage In his "Genesis of the United States National Museum," Dr. George Brown Goode has given a vivid sketch of a very important epoch in the scientific history of this country, showing how a learned society of Washington, at one time possessing 1,600 members, markedly influenced the plan and organization of the Smithsonian Institution, and especially its museum feature. The National Institution, later changed to National Institute, was established on May 15, 1840, by the adoption of a constitution and a declaration of its objects, which were "to promote science and the useful arts, and to establish a national museum of natural history, etc." The founding of this society, as Dr. Goode explains, "was doubtless to a very great degree due to the stimulating and inspiring effects upon public opinion of the Smithsonian bequest." It acquired extensive collections of its own and for a short time also had custody of the Government collections, which were assembled and exhibited in a large hall in the Patent Office building, whence, in 1858 and 1862, they were transferred, in accordance with law, to the Smithsonian Institution. The plan of the National Institution, says Dr. Goode, "was conceived in a broad and liberal spirit; its membership was a strong one, including at the beginning about ninety representative men of Washington, Members of Congress, scientific men, clergymen and promient citizens, and as many more corresponding members, among whom were all the leading men of the country. Among its principal officers were the Secretary of War, the Secretary of the Navy, ex-President Adams, the Chief of Engineers of the Army, and other prominent officials. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agriculture and Rural Connections in the Pacific brings together key studies from across several disciplines to examine the history of trans-Pacific rural and agricultural connections and to show an agriculturally-oriented Pacific World in the making since the 1500s. Historical globalization is commonly understood as a process that is propelled by industry or commerce, yet the seeds of global integration - literally as well as metaphorically - were sown much earlier, when crops and plants dispersed, agricultural systems proliferated, and rural people migrated across oceans. One goal of this volume is to demonstrate that the historical processes of globalization contained an agrarian dimension in which sub-national and national spaces were shaped in part through the influence of forces that originated in distant lands. Social and economic trends emanating from outside local territories had large impacts on demographic change, choices of agrarian systems, and the cropping patterns in many domestic settings. A second goal is to encourage readers to abandon the traditional Euro-centric view of events that shaped the Pacific region. The modern history of the Pacific World was undoubtedly shaped by Western imperialism, colonialism, and European trade and migration, but the present volume seeks to balance the interpretation of those forces with an emphasis on the increasing intensity of trans-Pacific interactions through rural labor migration and agricultural production.

Download or read book Useful Objects written by Reed Gochberg and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021-08-18 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Useful Objects examines the history of American museums during the nineteenth century through the eyes of visitors, writers, and collectors. Museums of this period included a wide range of objects, from botanical and zoological specimens to antiquarian artifacts and technological models. Intended to promote "useful knowledge," these collections generated broader discussions about how objects were selected, preserved, and classified. In guidebooks and periodicals, visitors described their experiences within museum galleries and marveled at the objects they encountered. In fiction, essays, and poems, writers embraced the imaginative possibilities represented by collections and proposed alternative systems of arrangement. These conversations interrogated many aspects of American culture, raising deep questions about how objects are interpreted--and who gets to decide their value. Combining literary criticism, the history of science, and museum studies, Useful Objects examines the dynamic and often fraught debates that emerged during a crucial period in the history of museums by drawing on a wide range of archival materials and accounts in fiction, guidebooks, and periodicals. As museums gradually transformed from encyclopedic cabinets to more specialized public institutions, many writers, including J. Hector St. John de Crèvecoeur, Jane Johnston Schoolcraft, William Wells Brown, Walt Whitman, and Henry David Thoreau, questioned who would have access to collections and the authority to interpret them. Throughout this period, they considered loss and preservation, raised concerns about the place of new ideas, and resisted increasingly fixed categories. Their reflections shaped broader debates about the scope and purpose of museums in American culture that continue to resonate today.

Book Foreign Trends in American Gardens

Download or read book Foreign Trends in American Gardens written by Raffaella Fabiani Giannetto and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2017-02-08 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Foreign Trends in American Gardens addresses the influence of foreign, designed landscapes on the development of their American counterparts. Including essays from an array of significant scholars in landscape studies, this collection examines topics ranging from the importation of Western and Eastern styles of design and theoretical literature to the adaptation of specific plant types. As the variety of topics and influences discussed demonstrates, the essence of American gardens defies simple definition. Examining the translation, imitation, adaptation, and naturalization of stylistic trends and horticultural specimens into American gardens, the book also dwells on the juxtaposition of the foreign and the native. The volume’s contributors consider the experiences both of immigrants, who contributed through their writing, planting, and design efforts to enhance the character of regional gardens, and of Americans, who traveled abroad and brought back with them a passion for naturalizing exotics for scientific as well as aesthetic reasons. The complexity of American gardens—their combination of the historic and the modern, and of foreign cultures and local values—is also their most distinctive characteristic.
