Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cathlamet on the Columbia: Recollections of the Indian People and Short Stories of Early Pioneer Days in the Valley of the Lower Columbia River Modestly does the author of these tales refer to them as perhaps of little worth; but he has made a work which though small in com pass, shines with a quality that endures. It is an unusual book. It possesses savor and sincerity, exactness and charm. Pioneer incidents are told with the warmth that comes of long saturated experience. The Indian scenes are more somber, as befits the race, but related in mellow tones that make the almost forgotten aboriginal live. They embody rare facts of value to the historian and ethnologist. Over all broods the back ground of river and fir. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Down the Columbia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Down the Columbia Classic Reprint written by Lewis R. Freeman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Down the Columbia Putting the rainbow revel of the incomparable Can yon behind, we had crossed Yellowstone Lake on the ice and fared onward and upward until we came at last to the long climb where the road under its ten feet of snow wound up to the crest of the Continental Divide. It was so dry and cold that the powdery snow overlying the crust rustled under our ski like autumn leaves. The air was diamond clear, so trans parent that distant mountain peaks, juggled in the wizardry of the lens of the light, seemed fairly to float upon the eyeball. At the summit, where we paused for breath, an old Sergeant of the Game Patrol, letting down a tin can on a string, brought up drinks from an air-hole which he claimed was teetering giddily upon the very ridge pole of North America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Fur Traders of the Columbia River and the Rocky Mountains That the record Of such men and of such deeds be came interesting and readable under the pen of Irving is a fact creditable to that writer and fortunate for the student; and it should have given no Ofl'ence to the ponderous historian who staked out trans-mississippi as his particular claim. Book Survey of the Columbia River and Its Tributaries Vol 3 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Survey of the Columbia River and Its Tributaries Vol 3 Classic Reprint written by Zell E. Parkhurst and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Survey of the Columbia River and Its Tributaries, Vol. 3 Many of the watersheds were completely logged off long ago and as a result stream flows are usually much smaller and water temperatures much higher than formerly during the summer and fall months. Therefore, the stream Spawning capacities are smaller than formerly. However, an extensive regrowth of timber and brush on the deforested slopes should result in some improvement of stream spawning conditions in the future. Practically all of the tributaries originally supported capacity runs of salmon, principally fall Chinook, silver and chum salmon. There were also good runs of steelhead and sea-run cutthroat trout. Despite the harmful effects resulting from logging operations, the encroachment of civilization, and a certain amount of overfishing, the streams still maintain a sufficient nucleus of fish and still have sufficient poten tial value to warrant their rehabilitation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Notices of the Harbor at the Mouth of the Columbia River: By the Commander and Other Officers of the Exploring Expedition I am well aware that many Opinions have been, and still are, entertained relative to the prudence of venturing with the ship before the channel had been explored and examined by the tender and boats. This is but natural to one unacquainted with the bar of the Columbia river and its dangers. Fter having paid much atten tion to this subject, and having been engaged there with the tender and boats in the survey, I feel myself entitled to give an Opinion as to the course pursued by Captain Hudson, and think it alto gether correct, on every ground of expediency, as well as the only proper one for him to have fol lowed under these circumstances. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Adventures on the Columbia River: Including the Narrative of a Residence of Six Years on the Western Side of the Rocky Mountains, Among Various Tribes of Indians Hitherto Unknown The following Narrative embraces a period of six years, five of which were spent among various tribes on the banks of the Columbia River and its tributary streams; and the remaining portion was occupied in the voyage outwards, and the journey across the continent. During this period the author ascended the Columbia nine times, and descended it eight; wintered among various tribes; was engaged in several encounters with the Indians; was lost fourteen days in a wilderness, and had many other extraordinary escapes. He kept journals of the principal events which occurred during the greater part of this period, the substance of which will be found imbodied in the following pages. Those who love to read of battle, murder, and sudden death, will, in his description of the dangers and privations to which the life of an Indian trader is subject, find much to gratify their taste; while to such as are fond of nature, in its rudest and most savage forms, he trusts his sketches of the wild and wandering tribes of Western America may not be found uninteresting.
