To man the fortresses of Quebec and Kingston, and to cover a frontier of 1,700 miles in length, the whole available force consisted of 4,450 regulars of all arms. In the Upper Province, which presents a water frontier of 1,300 miles, there were but 1,450 soldiers, or about two men and a fraction per mile, without counting garrisons. Sir George Prevost, whose qualifications partook more of a civil than of a military character, governed the country, and commanded in chief. The militia consisted of about 2,000 men in the Lower Province, and perhaps 1,800 in the Upper, not all called out, unarmed and undisciplined, and possessing little of the appearance or of the quality of soldiers, except pluck. It may well be imagined, and admitted without disparagement to any, that, in the absence of all fitting preparation, the tocsin of war bore upon its echoes dismay to many hearts. The preparations of the enemy had been long made and ostentatiously paraded. Doubtless their extent had been exaggerated, but still they wereimmeasurably in ...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eighteenth-century Spanish artist Francisco Goya is renowned for challenging conventional notions of art and inspiring later movements such as Romanticism, Impressionism, and Surrealism. Unafraid of pushing the boundaries of tradition, Goya created scenes of human suffering as well as fantastical images such as witches and demons, though he was also a skilled portraitist and painted events such as Napoleon’s 1808 invasion of Spain. Filled with paintings from every stage of Goya’s career, this resource highlights why he has been such an inspiration to modern artists, especially those who use their art to express the unspeakable.

Book Goya s black Paintings

Download or read book Goya s black Paintings written by Priscilla E. Muller and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A review of Goya's life as it unfolded before he bought the quinta in 1819 will provide an impression of the complexion of the man who soon offered such awe-inspiring imagery on the walls of two of its rooms. An examination of the quinta setting which yields a somewhat revised plan of how the 'black' paintings were seen will then demonstrate that the paintings were envisioned as a program consisteing of two separate, though not unrelated, cycles. (Unhappily, Goya's placement of the scenes cannot yet be repeated in full.) An analysis of the subjects set forth upon the quinta walls will illustrate the significances and relevancies they should have held at the time in which the were created, and thus, their raison d'être. A consideration of possible antecedents which may have given impetus to the formulation and format of the program, and indications of Goya's alertness to works by his contemporaries in art, literature and the theater, will furnish insight into the plans he may have held for the 'black' paintintgs he brushed with such urgency within his quinta rooms."--Introduction, page 13

Download or read book A World Restored written by Henry Kissinger and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-07 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1957—years before he was Secretary of State and winner of the Nobel Peace Prize—, Henry Kissinger wrote A World Restored, to understand and explain one of history’s most important and dramatic periods; a time when Europe went from political chaos to a balanced peace that lasted for almost a hundred years. After the fall of Napoleon, European diplomats gathered in a festive Vienna with the task of restoring stability following the French Revolution, the Napoleonic Wars, and the dissolution of the Holy Roman Empire. The central figures at the Congress of Vienna were the Foreign Secretary of the United Kingdom, Viscount Castlereagh and the Foreign Minister of Austria Klemens Wenzel von Mettern Metternich. Castlereagh was primarily concerned with maintaining balanced powers, while Metternich based his diplomacy on the idea of legitimacy—that is, establishing and working with governments that citizens accept without force. The peace they brokered lasted until the outbreak of World War I. Through trenchant analysis of the history and forces that create stability, A World Restored gives insight into how to create long-lasting geopolitical peace-lessons that Kissinger saw as applicable to the period immediately following World War II, when he was writing this book. But the lessons don’t stop there. Like all good insights, the book’s wisdom transcends any single political period. Kissinger’s understanding of coalitions and balance of power can be applied to personal and professional situations, such as dealing with a tyrannical boss or co-worker or formulating business or organizational tactics. Regardless of his ideology, Henry Kissinger has had an important impact on modern politics and few would dispute his brilliance as a strategist. For anyone interested in Western history, the tactics of diplomacy, or political strategy, this volume will provide deep understanding of a pivotal time.
