And of many island possessions amidst the seas, were all blank or alien. They were unknown to civilisation, to commerce, or to society. They contributed naught to the wealth or progress of mankind. Known only to the scanty or savage or unlettered peoples who roamed their wilds or tenanted their untravelled depths, they were spheres of curiosity or conjecture, rather than of influence or activity. Scenes of myth or mystery, they were the prey of inventive chronicler or fanciful fable-monger. Travellers said what they liked concerning regions where their pens and pencils could confidently run riot in imaginative exaggera tions. Though there are notable exceptions in the way of truthful narration, the books and prints of that period too often bear amusing testimony to the un bridled freedom with which visitors to distant and um known countries exercised their descriptive faculties. Then, as now, the De Rougemonts of the press found an ample and a credulous auditory. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of the Colonies: Comprising a History of the Colonies Composing the United States, From the Discovery in the Tenth Century Until the Commencement of the Revolution War A friend, who is so kind as to express a favourable opinion respecting the "Book of the Navy" and the "Book of the Army" suggested the propriety of completing the series by a "Book of the Colonies" As the two former works present a view of the naval and military history of the country from the declaration of independence to the present time, and the Book of the Colonies gives a general history, from the earliest times to the commencement of the revolutionary war; we have thus a review of the main current of history through the whole period of our colonial and national existence; while each of the volumes is a complete and distinct work, having its proper subject and unity. This present work is chiefly drawn from Murray, whose chapters on the colonization of the United States are written with great care, with access to a first-rate collection of authorities, and in a spirit of intelligent liberality, as admirable as it is rare. Book The American Colonies in the Seventeenth Century Vol 1 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 618 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Colonies in the Seventeenth Century, Vol. 1 The author is fully aware that the attempt to analyze and compare the institutions of fifteen colonies, and to trace their political history, even in part, during a period of half a. Century or more, is a work of some complexity. In his effort to do this he has limited himself, in nearly all in stances, to the seventeenth century and to the material which was accessible for that period of time. This it was necessary to do in order to show what the governmental system was before the transition from the chartered colonies to the system of royal provinces occurred. Book Life in the Eighteenth Century

Download or read book Life in the Eighteenth Century written by George Cary Eggleston and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Life in the Eighteenth Century: A Little History of Colonial Life The social and political institutions of every country are the outgrowths of that country's life conditions, except in so far as institutions may be imposed upon a people by an authority outside of themselves. In our country outside authority has never been able thus to impress itself upon the minds and lives of the people. The development of American institutions, American ideas, and American life, has been exclusively from within. Our system, from top to bottom, is the creation of the people who live under it. It is therefore peculiarly well adapted to their needs, and peculiarly an expression of their common thought and aspiration. The men and women who founded the English colonies in America, and the men and women who built those colonies up into great, self-governing commonwealths, were from the beginning men and women in revolt against the life conditions into which they were born. Book The American Colonies in the Seventeenth Century Vol 3 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-10-12 with total page 580 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Colonies in the Seventeenth Century, Vol. 3 British system of control. In the present volume an at tempt has for the first the been made to trace the history of this control as a distinct and separate feature of coloniza tion. Attention has been directed to the organs through which it was exercised, to the objects and ideals which were pursued, and to the obstacles which prevented their attain ment. The early stage of development only has been traced; the heart of the subject has been reached. If the inquiry can be pursued through the period of the French wars, and the processes of control as applied to the royal provinces be revealed, a body of precedent will be collected and a point of view attained, in the light of which the events of the colonial revolt will appear in their proper relief. For valuable suggestions in reference to the commercial policy of England, I am indebted to Mr. George Louis Beer. The preparation of the manuscript for the press has been greatly facilitated by the assistance of my wife. Book The Colonial Period Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Colonial Period Classic Reprint written by Charles McLean Andrews and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-12 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Colonial Period No attempt has been made in this volume to write a history of the individual colonies or to present in any form a narrative of the events of colonial history. Many familiar details have been omitted and all military undertakings in which the colonists were engaged have been passed over with very little comment. In dealing with colonial history in general, three factors stand out for conspicuous treatment: the mother country, the colonies, and the relations between them. It has been customary in the past, when writing of the colonial period of American history, to minimize the importance of the first and last factors, and to lay stress, at least until the period of the Revolution is reached, upon the colonies, their institutions, and life. Book A History of the United States Vol 2

Download or read book A History of the United States Vol 2 written by Edward Channing and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of the United States, Vol. 2: A Century of Colonial History, 1660-1760 The prompt action of the new government and the Convention Parliament in pushing on the passage of the Navigation Act was due to the financial straits of the new rulers, and to the pressure which the mercantile and in dustrial classes put upon them.3 In those days, mer chants, land owners, and men of education were united in believing that the exploitation of colonists for the benefit of the people of the mother country was right and proper. Such a policy does not indicate that they were actuated by a Spirit of despotism or disregard Of colonial interests, but Simply that they were living in the days when the existence of colonies could only be defended on business grounds. Moreover, the system that comes to be outlined in the navigation laws and acts of trade was a system of intraimperial free trade and preference for Eng lish products, which reminds one of the policy of the United States two hundred and fifty years later. Book The Story of the Thirteen Colonies Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of the Thirteen Colonies Classic Reprint written by Hélène Adeline Guerber and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-17 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of the Thirteen Colonies This book is intended as an historical reader, an elementary text-book in the history of our country, or as an introduction or supplement to any of the excellent text-books on the history of the United States now in use. The aim has been not only to interest children in the great men of their own country, but to stimulate them to the cultiva tion of the lofty virtues of which they read, and to instil within their hearts a deep love for their native land. All the main facts in our early history have been given as sim ply and vividly as possible, and the lessons of patriotism, truth fulness, courage, patience, honesty, and industry taught by the lives of our principal heroes are carefully enforced. Great pains have also been taken to relate all the well-known anecdotes and quote the famous speeches which are so frequently alluded to in our current literature. Although this book ends with the Revolutionary War, the story of our country is continued on the same lines in a companion volume entitled The Story of the Great Republic; yet each book is independent of the other and can be used separately. So simply worded as to be easily intelligible to average children of ten or twelve years of age, the text is further arranged in short paragraphs, to facilitate its use as a reader in large classes. Book American Literature in the Colonial and National Periods Classic Reprint

Download or read book American Literature in the Colonial and National Periods Classic Reprint written by Lorenzo Sears and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-20 with total page 498 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Literature in the Colonial and National Periods The division of the subject made in the title seems warranted by the difference between ideas which pre vailed in the first century and three-quarters and those in the remainder of the three centuries, almost, during which english-speaking people have lived and written in this country. In the first period the manner of life and thought was that of British colonists; in the last, that of American citizens. The transition was not immediate in letters, as it was not in politics, but the quarter century during which independence was first devised and declared, and then won and acknowledged, contained a point where the dividing line may be drawn between two diverse literary periods. For convenience, 1783, the date of the Paris treaty, may serve as well as any. Further division has not been deemed essential to the present purpose. This purpose is to indicate, by mention of leading authors and their works, the growth of letters in Amer ica, from such efforts as the earliest English immigrants were able to make, with the attainments they brought from home, down to achievements by citizens of a nation old enough to have a literature of its own, however much it may be indebted to treasures in other lands. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Colonial Days: A Historical Reader The large place given to history during the last fifteen years, in both the elementary and the high school, is significant. It indicates a fuller realization of the importance of this branch of study in developing the social instincts. Through the study of history the narrow contact of every-day life is supplemented by a knowledge of the struggles and achievements of all humanity. The pupil shares and profits by the experience of the race; and by making the racial life his own, he gains social insight and social disposition, which prepare him to render his highest service to the community. In the lower grades of the elementary school most of the work in history should be in the form of oral language lessons, and the subject-matter should be presented in story form. The concrete, the personal, and the dramatic, appealing in a special way to children, should be made prominent; for through this avenue alone can the teacher reach the imaginative and the emotional life of the child. But as early as the fourth grade reading should supplement the oral work. With this idea in view the present volume, the second of a series, has been prepared. The title gives some indication of its scope and purpose. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Making of the Empire: The Story of Our Colonies New England colonists have left us, the son of an agricultural labourer has given to us another continent in Australia. Peace comes at the beginning of the nineteenth century, and the tide of emigration flows strongly. Men have been leaving the Old country and making homes for themselves across the Atlantic, at the Cape, and in the beautiful islands of the Caribbean Sea. Without haste and without rest we go on finding new places for settlement and new markets for our trade. Our population increases and brims over; splendid cities arise on the Australian coasts, explorers reveal the riches Of Africa, and our merchants in India surrender to the Queen the Empire they have built up. The United Kingdom becomes Greater Britain, and more settlements and colonies are added each year. We shall note in these pages the recent rush for Africa, and we shall see how large a share of the Dark Continent has fallen to us. Then, too, we shall look in upon the Dyaks Of Borneo, the Papuans in their great island of New Guinea, the Malays of the Straits Settlements, the Chinese at Hong Kong, and the Australian settlers in beautiful Fiji. The growth and increase of all will be noted in turn. Our colonies have grown up in various ways. Some, like Canada, are the outcome of hard fighting between England and a rival power; others, like Australia and New Zealand, are the fruits of adventurous voyages; while our great empire in India is the result Of interposing with a strong arm in the quarrels of the native races. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Days of the Colonists The exploring party was following the river, which Smith reckoned by his compass to be hereabouts more or less parallel to the James. The weather was mild and delicate, with no sign of winter, and he meant to keep on somehow, afoot or afloat, until he found that corn. When the shallop, a sloop-rigged craft of about twelve tons, could go no further, he could take the two Indians and two white companions and proceed by canoe. This he presently did, leaving the rest to guard the sailing vessel where it lay at anchor. A while after the canoe disappeared those who te mained thought they caught a glimpse Of shadowy figures flitting in the same direction through the forest, though the woodlands were as silent as the creeping waters. Then they fancied that far away they heard shots and a cry, but nothing more occurred, nor did any message or Sign come from their leader. At last they gave up hope and went back to Jamestown.
