Book excerpt: During the twenty years before the American Revolution, thirty-seven men acted as paid agent or lobbyists for the American colonies in England. The most famous among them were Benjamin Franklin, who represented four different colonies and served for seventeen years as agenet for Pennsylvania, and Edmund Burke, who accepted the position to further his own career. Yet the other thirty-five were also a colorful and heterogenous group. This detailed study, by a Pulitzer-prize-winning historian, of their activities and of the gradual breakdown of communications between the colonies and the mother country, until the link between the two become only "a rope of sand," is, in the words of the Richmond News Leader, "a new and invigorating approach to the American fight for independence." "Soundly documented, well organized and highly readable." - The New York Historical Society Quarterly "A challenging book about an important historical institution." - The Historian "A substantial contribution to our understanding of Anglo-American history during the eighteenth century." - The New England Quarterly "Both in concept and execution, A Rope of Sand is impressive." - The Journal of American History

Book The Atlantic Economy during the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries

Download or read book The Atlantic Economy during the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries written by Peter A. Coclanis and published by Univ of South Carolina Press. This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Atlantic Economy during the Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries is a collection of essays focusing on the expansion, elaboration, and increasing integration of the economy of the Atlantic basin—comprising parts of Europe, West Africa, and the Americas—during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. In thirteen essays, the contributors examine the complex and variegated processes by which markets were created in the Atlantic basin and how they became integrated. While a number of the contributors focus on the economic history of a specific European imperial system, others, mirroring the realities of the world they are writing about, transcend imperial boundaries and investigate topics shared throughout the region. In the latter case, the contributors focus either on processes occurring along the margins or interstices of empires, or on "breaches" in the colonial systems established by various European powers. Taken together, the essays shed much-needed light on the organization and operation of both the European imperial orders of the early modern era and the increasingly integrated economy of the Atlantic basin challenging these orders over the course of the same period.

Book Oaths of Allegiance in Colonial New England

Download or read book Oaths of Allegiance in Colonial New England written by Charles Evans and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2019-12-19 with total page 109 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The antiquity of the custom of giving and taking Oaths, or the debatable questions of their observance being a religious or legal ceremony, and whether the moral or political aspect has the greater effect upon the minds of men, are subjects with which this paper has nothing to do. This book is preoccupied only on discussing oaths of allegiances given starting from the reign of James the First, of England, during which time the providences of God directed the course of the voyage of the Pilgrims away from the Colony of Virginia to their settlement at Plymouth in New England, all the way up to the reign of James the Second, until Sir Edmund Andros, knight, arrived in Boston with a commission to govern New England, and the Colonial period of New England came to an end.

Book The Colonial Agents of the British West Indies

Download or read book The Colonial Agents of the British West Indies written by Lillian M. Penson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-03 with total page 153 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1924, at the time, this was the first detailed study which attempted to investigate the workings and character of the powerful West Indian interest in London in the eighteenth century. At the centre of this interest stood the Colonial Agent, an office which had come into existence when the West Indian interest was born. Dr. Penson traces its growth from the Restoration era, through the Peace of Paris, when its importance began to decline, to the nineteenth century when the office finally disappeared. It is based on exhaustive research in public and private archives.
