Book The Colombian Economy and Its Regional Structural Challenges

Download or read book The Colombian Economy and Its Regional Structural Challenges written by Eduardo A. Haddad and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-05-30 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines regional structural challenges on Colombia’s path to sustainable social cohesion and regionally inclusive growth. These challenges can be divided into three main groups: (i) those that focus on competitiveness and the supply side, (ii) those that arise from critical business cycle issues on the demand side, and (iii) those concerning environmental sustainability, employment and social inclusion. The contributions, written by experts on Latin American economics and regional science, apply quantitative simulations based on a unified general equilibrium framework and address a wide range of topics, including: Colombia’s competitive integration in global markets, human capital profiles, regional economic disparities and public and private mechanisms of interregional income transfer. The challenges entailed by such high-profile and long-term issues as productivity growth and climate change are also analyzed. In addition, the book positions Colombia’s experiences in an international comparative context. It argues that many other Latin American countries face similar challenges and provide evidence to substantiate this claim. By doing so, it offers valuable policy lessons for Latin American countries with similar difficulties.

Download or read book OECD Economic Surveys written by Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development and published by OECD. This book was released on 2015-01-19 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Colombia's economy has done remarkably well over the last decade. Strong growth was driven by an oil and mining boom, foreign direct investment in the commodity sector and broad-based investment. Bilateral free trade agreements and unilateral measures have continued to reduce barriers to trade and investment. A solid monetary, fiscal and financial framework reduced macroeconomic volatility, which characterised the previous decades. The improved security situation has also contributed to growth. All this has allowed fast catch-up growth in GDP per capita relative to OECD economies. However, productivity and investment outside oil and mining remains subdued, due to a high tax burden on corporations and labour, inadequate infrastructure, and limits to access to finance. Inequality and informality, and old-age poverty remain among the highest in Latin America, despite recent progress in overall poverty reduction. The minimum wage is high relative to earnings, pushing low skilled workers, youth, and those in less developed regions into the informal sector. Although declining to historical lows, structural unemployment remains high by international comparison, reducing the population's well-being.

Book Investment Decision Making Practices in Colombia

Download or read book Investment Decision Making Practices in Colombia written by Ignacio Velez-Pareja and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operations Research and Capital Budgeting techniques were introduced in Colombia in the late 50's. In a survey conducted during 1980, about one-half of the large firms in Bogota, Colombia use discounted methods for investment decisions, as compared to about two-third of the firms in the United States. These figures are comparable with the ones found in U.S.A. in the mid 70's. Forty two firms out of the top 100 largest firm in the country answered the survey. These methods are all the more important in the Colombian economy which has a considerably higher rate of inflation and a monetary policy designed for credit restrictions.
