Book Absence of Decision

Download or read book Absence of Decision written by Craufurd D. Goodwin and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 70 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Policy issues concerning foreign students that affect decision makers of U.S. colleges and universities were studied, along with the views of institutional representatives concerning the presence of foreign students, problems areas they perceive, and the formation and implementation of policy regarding these students. Attention was focused on three states: Florida, Ohio, and California, as well as two institutions in other states that are greatly involved in international programs: Columbia University and Michigan State University. In addition to the college staff and students, opinions were solicited from college trustees, state legislators, and aides to governors. The following policy issues were covered: the survival of certain fields of study in the United States; foreign students as "filler"; the export of higher education services; benefits to the local, state, and national economy; the special costs of foreign students; cost-benefit pricing of foreign student education; and the foreign student cash-flow issue. Arguments for careful inquiry by the institution into the question of foreign students, and implications for institutional organization are briefly considered. Issues that especially call for national attention regarding economic, socio-organizational, and educational areas are also addressed. A list of positions of interviewees by state and institution is appended. (SW)

Book excerpt: A young Korean man scarred by war finds unlikely love in the American South in the National Book Award–winning author’s acclaimed debut novel. Tennessee, 1955. When Chuck Ahn arrives in Sewanee to begin his studies at the University of the South, he is shy and speaks English haltingly. On the subject of his earlier life in Korea, he will not speak at all. Then he meets Katherine Monroe, a beautiful and solitary young woman who, like Chuck, is haunted by some dark episode in her past. Without quite knowing why, these two outsiders are drawn together, each sensing in the other the possibility of salvation. Moving between the American South and South Korea, between an adolescent girl’s sexual awakening and a young man’s nightmarish memories of war, The Foreign Student is a powerful and emotionally gripping work of fiction. “An auspicious debut.” —The New Yorker

Book Succeeding as an International Student in the United States and Canada

Download or read book Succeeding as an International Student in the United States and Canada written by Charles Lipson and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2010-02-15 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Each year, 700,000 students from around the world come to the United States and Canada to study. For many, the experience is as challenging as it is exciting. Far from home, they must adapt to a new culture, new university system, and in many cases, a new language. The process can be overwhelming, but as Charles Lipson’s Succeeding as an International Student in the United States and Canada assures us, it doesn’t have to be. Succeeding is designed to help students navigate the myriad issues they will encounter—from picking a program to landing a campus job. Based on Lipson’s work with international students as well as extensive interviews with faculty and advisers, Succeeding includes practical suggestions for learning English, participating in class, and meeting with instructors. In addition it explains the rules of academic honesty as they are understood in U.S. and Canadian universities. Life beyond the classroom is also covered, with handy sections on living on or off campus, obtaining a driver’s license, setting up a bank account, and more. The comprehensive glossary addresses both academic terms and phrases heard while shopping or visiting a doctor. There is even a chapter on the academic calendar and holidays in the United States and Canada. Coming to a new country to study should be an exciting venture, not a baffling ordeal. Now, with this trustworthy resource, international students have all the practical information they need to succeed, in and out of the classroom.

Book America Calling

Download or read book America Calling written by Rajika Bhandari and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2021-09-14 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Growing up in middle-class India, Rajika Bhandari has seen generations of her family look westward, where an American education means status and success. But she resists the lure of America because those who left never return—they all become flies trapped in honey in a land of opportunity. As a young woman, however, she finds herself heading to a US university to study, following her heart and a relationship. When that relationship ends and she fails in her attempt to move back to India as a foreign-educated woman, she returns to the US and finds herself in a job where the personal is political and professional: she is immersed in the lives of international students who come to America from over 200 countries, the universities that attract them, and the tangled web of immigration that a student must navigate. An unflinching and insightful narrative that explores the global appeal of a Made in America education that is a bridge to America’s successful past and to its future, America Calling is both a deeply personal story of Bhandari’s search for her place and voice, and an incisive analysis of America’s relationship with the rest of the world through the most powerful tool of diplomacy: education. At a time of growing nationalism, a turning inward, and fear of the “other,” America Calling is ultimately a call to action to keep America’s borders—and minds—open.

Download or read book All I Wanted Was an Education written by Omoviekovwa A. Nakireru and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 1999-12 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some American children do not realize how blessed they are to have so many educational choices. There are more than 3,000 universities and colleges in the United States offering every subject from Architecture to Zoology. An average American student needs only the will to study and the zeal to accomplish and the sky is the limit. Some students do not explore the educational opportunities presented to them. They let the pressures of educational demands overwhelm them and many drop out of school for personal reasons. For many foreign students like me, the choices are limited and the road to success ranges from slim to none. The obstacles are many and strenuous and they include; financial problems, home sickness, culture shock, weather adjustment, Immigration Department concerns, loneliness and the list goes on. In the mist of these problems quitting is not an option. There are two goals, the will to survive and succeed because this opportunity may not be available again. My story is based on the “will” to survive and accomplish a dream. How did I survive? Find out when you read, All I wanted was an Education; the Epic of a foreign Student.
