Book Disability in Higher Education

Download or read book Disability in Higher Education written by Nancy J. Evans and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2017-03-06 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Create campuses inclusive and supportive of disabled students, staff, and faculty Disability in Higher Education: A Social Justice Approach examines how disability is conceptualized in higher education and ways in which students, faculty, and staff with disabilities are viewed and served on college campuses. Drawing on multiple theoretical frameworks, research, and experience creating inclusive campuses, this text offers a new framework for understanding disability using a social justice lens. Many institutions focus solely on legal access and accommodation, enabling a system of exclusion and oppression. However, using principles of universal design, social justice, and other inclusive practices, campus environments can be transformed into more inclusive and equitable settings for all constituents. The authors consider the experiences of students, faculty, and staff with disabilities and offer strategies for addressing ableism within a variety of settings, including classrooms, residence halls, admissions and orientation, student organizations, career development, and counseling. They also expand traditional student affairs understandings of disability issues by including chapters on technology, law, theory, and disability services. Using social justice principles, the discussion spans the entire college experience of individuals with disabilities, and avoids any single-issue focus such as physical accessibility or classroom accommodations. The book will help readers: Consider issues in addition to access and accommodation Use principles of universal design to benefit students and employees in academic, cocurricular, and employment settings Understand how disability interacts with multiple aspects of identity and experience. Despite their best intentions, college personnel frequently approach disability from the singular perspective of access to the exclusion of other important issues. This book provides strategies for addressing ableism in the assumptions, policies and practices, organizational structures, attitudes, and physical structures of higher education.

Book Understanding the Experiences of College Students with Learning Disabilities

Download or read book Understanding the Experiences of College Students with Learning Disabilities written by Beverly A. Ebo and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 127 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: College is an important and significant undertaking for any student, especially for someone with a learning disability. The number of students with a learning disability entering post-secondary education is increasing each year; therefore, it is important for academia to increase its understanding of students with learning disabilities and the perception of their experiences while they navigate their way through college. Using the theoretical framework of Self-Determination Theory, the purpose of this Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) study was to understand and describe the experiences of students with a learning disability as they make their way through college. As such, this study sought to answer the following research question: How do upperclassmen college students with a learning disability describe their college learning experiences at a private university located in the Southeast United States? The participants perceived that by concealing their learning disabilities, it would be easier for them and they would avoid being stigmatized. However, they understood in order to receive accommodations they had to self-disclose this information after leaving high school. The participants faced many adversities; however, it was their resilience that made them successful. The findings are relevant for secondary and post-secondary professionals who provide services to students with learning disabilities. However, additional research is needed to explore the perspectives of students with learning and physical disabilities to include diversity such as gender, ethnicity and other characteristics that may be unique to the specific college.

Book College Students with Physical Disabilities

Download or read book College Students with Physical Disabilities written by Adam Tolbert Wall and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 164 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, 2017a), there are over 19 million students who are currently enrolled in institutions of higher education. For the past 40 years, the number of students with disabilities attending colleges and universities has grown exponentially (NCES, 2017b). There is an abundance of research regarding many aspects of the experience of college students with a physical disability across social science, medical, and education literature; however, research targeted specifically at general counseling practitioners, counselor educators, and college counselors is relatively limited. The purpose of this investigation was to study the inner lives of a group of undergraduate students with physical disabilities as they pursue degree attainment. More specifically, the investigation sought to understand (a) their general concerns, (b) the types of challenges they face and how they navigate resolving them, and (c) advice they have for faculty, staff, and other students based on their individual experiences. An Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (Harper & Thompson, 2012) was used to analyze in-depth interviews conducted with five participants. Findings revealed three dominant themes. Striving towards independence and self-reliance was central to understanding the experience and meaning making of the participants. Additionally, accessibility to space and all of the accommodations they believed would be helpful proved to be challenging. Lastly, students believed their engagement on campus was central to their overall success.

Book I Am Here for a Reason

Download or read book I Am Here for a Reason written by Latrecha Kasha Scott and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although researchers have studied "the role of self-determination in facilitating transition planning and services, very little is known about the impact of those supports and services from the students' perspective once they are in postsecondary settings" (Getzel & Thoma, 2008). In addition, literature was limited regarding the impact of selfdetermination from the student perspective after enrollment into higher education (Denhart, 2008; Fuller, Bradley & Healey, 2004; Getzel & Thoma, 2008). Using a qualitative design, this study explores the contributions of self-advocacy and motivation to the experiences of higher education students with physical disabilities. The purpose of this study was to explore the self-reported impacts of self-advocacy and motivation on the experiences of students with physical disabilities in higher education. In higher education and, in addition, to explore the sources of these students' motivations, the source of their advocacy, and the connection or the lack of connection between the two. In this study, 11 higher education students with physical disabilities were interviewed. The themes that were identified impacted how self-advocacy and motivation skills influence each other and the overall college experience. The findings from the study indicate self-advocacy and motivation exist together. Participants in this study understood their functional limitations and needs, knew how to self-identify and advocate, sought appropriate assistance, built support networks, and participated in preparation programs and social engagement. They also actively communicated with professors beyond an initial introduction at the beginning of the semester and had no problems communicating issues with disability services staff. Further, participants shared their motivations, both intrinsic and extrinsic, which further reflect their ability to advocate for themselves and others. Gaining an understanding of how motivation and self-advocacy skills affect the college experience for students with disabilities can help this group and others move toward establishing academic and social independence and college success. --Page ii.
