Much of his non-fiction output came in the form of essays and opinion pieces. He released several book-length collections of these, and also often published his work in the periodical press. Beginning in April 1997, he wrote a weekly column that was syndicated in Canadian newspapers belonging to the PostMedia chain. Serial issues containing Richler’s non-fiction writing comprise the bulk of the collection. Present are 167 full or partial issues of various Canadian newspapers and 101 magazine and journal issues that include writing by or about Richler. The collection also includes 59 monographs. Among them are Canadian and international editions of Richler’s fiction and his non-fiction collections. There are also several anthologies, three edited by Richler and eight containing short pieces by him. Additionally, there are six biographical or critical works that are fully or partially about Richler and his work. Seven of the books are review copies and four are proofs. Fifteen items are signed by the author, most of these personally inscribed to donor Ronald I. Cohen.

Patriotism resulted in the author voluntarily joining the National Guards when he became old enough to do so. This resulted in his being placed on active duty during the Berlin Crisis. What followed became a mystery that took fifty years to unravel. Because other veterans were caught in the same conundrum, the author’s experiences unlikely will have applicability to many veterans in addition the author.
