Book excerpt: The birth of modernity as seen through sixty stunning early works by three of the greatest artists of all times. This catalogue begins by examining Picasso's pre-cubist period, between 1900 and 1905, while closely contrasting works created by Juan Miró between 1915 and 1920 with those by Salvador Dalí in the five-year period between 1920-1925, in order to highlight the differences and stylistic relationships marking the period prior to the two artists' adherence to Surrealist poetics. In order to enquire into particular aspects of the early production of these artists, the authors have chosen works rarely exhibited in public or published; yet these fascinating paintings influenced what was to come, and they include The Spanish Dancer from 1901 by Picasso, Threshing by Mirò from 1918, and Neo-cubist academy by Dalì, which dates from 1926. Picasso's early work is profoundly influenced by the artist's political convictions: in Madrid in 1901 Picasso founded the magazine "Arte Joven", which frequently published unforgiving images of the plight of the proletariat. As for Miró, he rejected figurative painting as an expression of the cultural identity of the governing classes and also saw cubism as a "political tool". Much younger than Picasso and Miró, Dalí was ousted from the Academy in 1926, shortly prior to undertaking final examinations, for having declared that no one in the faculty was sufficiently competent to examine him. His early work is marked by a complete mastery of pictorial techniques, an example is Girl at the window from 1926, depicted with vivid realism.

Recipient of the prestigious Hasselblad Award in 2014, Ishiuchi ranks as one of the most significant photographers working in Japan today. Spurred by her contentious relationship with her hometown, Yokosuka — site of an important American naval base since 1945 — Ishiuchi chose that city as her first serious photographic subject. Grainy, moody, and deeply personal, these early projects established her career. This choice of subject also defined the beginning of Ishiuchi’s extended exploration of the American occupation and the shadows it cast over postwar Japan. Ishiuchi has since addressed the theme of occupation both indirectly — through her photographs of scars, skin, and other markers of time on the human body — and more explicitly, with her images of garments and accessories once owned by victims of the atomic blast in Hiroshima. Byattâ (TM)s visual still lifes (descriptions of real or imagined artworks) and what are termed â oeverbal still lifesâ (scenes such as laid tables, rooms and market stalls) are informed by her veneration of both realism and writing. It examines Byattâ (TM)s adoption of the Barthesian concept of textual pleasure, showing how her ekphrastic descriptions involve consumption and take time to unfold for the reader, thereby highlighting the limitations of painting. It also investigates the ways in which Byattâ (TM)s still lifes demonstrate her debts to English modernist author Virginia Woolf, French writer Marcel Proust, and the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood of nineteenth-century Britain. A number of Byattâ (TM)s verbal still lifes are read as semiotic markers of her characters, particularly with regard to economic status and class. Further, her descriptions uniting food and sexuality are perceived as part of her overall representation of pleasure. Finally, Byattâ (TM)s employment of vanitas iconography in many of her portrayals of death is discussed showing how her recurring motif of Keatsâ (TM)s â oeOde on a Grecian Urnâ teases out the still lifeâ (TM)s inherent tension between living passion and â oecoldâ artwork.
