Book excerpt: Excerpt from Collected Writings of Thomas De Quincey, Vol. 6 Knowledge on any subject; nor is its main Object that of delight to the reader by dreams and pictures of the poetical kind; nor does it seek merely to rouse and stimulate the feelings for active exertion of some sort 3 but, without any of these aims, or while perhaps studying one or other of them to some extent, it has in View always the solution of some problem, the investigation of some question, so as to effect a modification or advance of the existing doctrine on the subject. How firmly De Quincey held by this notion of the distinctive characteristic Of the Essay, as compared with other kinds of writing, appears from the striking word in which, after referring to the three above-named essays as examples of his own efforts in this line, he claims the merit of fidelity to his principle, in intention at least, in all his other efforts of the same general character. These speci mens, he says, meaning Cicero, The Caesars, and The Essenes, are sufficient for the purpose of informing the reader that. Book The Collected Writings of Thomas de Quincey Vol 12 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Collected Writings of Thomas de Quincey Vol 12 Classic Reprint written by David Masson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Collected Writings of Thomas De Quincey, Vol. 12 WE now reach the class of De Quincey's writings described in the prospectus of this edition under the collective title of tales, romances, and prose phantasies. The present volume and the next are devoted to the pretty numerous specimens that have come down to us of De Quincey's faculty in writings of this order. The more ordinary double-title of Tales and Romances may suffice, indeed, for the contents of this volume; but something additional is required for the description of the contents of the next, and Tales, Romances, and Prose Phantasies may there, accordingly, be the more fitting title. How much has had to be done for the recovery of the relics of De Quincey' s literary industry m the shape of still readable and interesting Tales and Romances will be under stood when we announce that more than two-thirds of the bulk of the present volume consists of matter not included in the previous sixteen-volume edition of De Quincey's Col lected Writings. On all grounds, the first place in the volume is due to the romance entitled Klosterheim, or The Masque. This romance, a tale of imaginary incidents in Germany in the time of the Thirty Years' War, is certainly the most care fully-written, as well as the most extensive, of all De Quincey's efforts in this kind of prose-fiction, and has the distinction, moreover, of being one of the very few produc tions of his pen which appeared originally in independent book-form, and not as mere magazine papers. It was first published in 1832 by Messrs. Blackwood of Edinburgh, in 3. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Collected Writings of Thomas De Quincey Vol 5 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Collected Writings of Thomas De Quincey Vol 5 Classic Reprint written by De Quincey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-11 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Collected Writings of Thomas De Quincey, Vol. 5 The papers included in this volume, like those in the last, were written a different points of De Quincey's life, and are culled from different periodicals. The long opening paper, entitled "Dr. Parr, or Whiggism in its Relations to Literature," but containing a great deal more than could be guessed from that title, and altogether one of the most fascinating specimens of De Quincey in what may be called his mischievous biographico-satirical vein, was a contribution to Blackwood in 1831. The amusing little paper called "Anecdotage" was one of his contributions to the London Magazine in 1823; the pleasant little biographic sketch of the Marquess Wellesley appeared in Tait's Magazine in 1846; "Coleridge and Opium-Eating" is a very interesting Blackwood paper of 1845; and the fine paper on Charles Lamb was written in 1848 for the North British Review. Of the two sketches of Professor Wilson, the first and more careful is of date 1829, and has been resuscitated from the columns of a long-defunct weekly once known as the Edinburgh Literary Gazette, while the other and slighter is of date 1850, and from the later and less-forgotten Edinburgh weekly called Hogg's Instructor. The valuable but strangely whimsical sketch entitled "Sir William Hamilton" was a contribution in 1852 to the same Hogg's Instructor' and the two closing papers of more distant historical range, entitled "Charlemagne" and "Joan of Arc," take us back respectively to Blackwood of 1832 and Tait of 1847. Book Beauties

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Beauties: Selected From the Writings of Thomas De Quincey The writings of Thomas de Quincey occupy more than a score of volumes. Comparatively few persons have leisure for the pereusal of so many miscellaneous works by the same author; yet, all who pretend to a knowledge of English Literature should be familiar with the chefs-d' uvre of De Quincey - one of the greatest masters of the English Language. His autobiography, scattered through many volumes, is here collected and so arranged as to give a complete view of his early life and his peculiar character. The other selections from his various works, furnish striking examples of the pathetic and the humorous, the quaint and the ludicrous, the serious and the sublime. The miscellaneous nature of De Quincey's writings renders them specially fit for this kind of eclecticism. It is hoped that the present volume will prove an acceptable addition to our current literature, and induce a desire for a still farther acquaintance with the elegant author. Download or read book The Collected Writings of Thomas De Quincey Vol 4 written by David Masson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Collected Writings of Thomas De Quincey, Vol. 4: Biographies and Biographical Sketches The three preceding volumes contain those writings of De Quincey which collectively constitute his autobiography and literary reminiscences. They carry us on, in a general way, to about the year when De Quincey had become famous as The English opium-eater, a versatile contributor to London periodicals, but had returned to his home at Grasmere after unsatisfactory trials of residence in London, and had begun to think that, if ever he removed from Grasmere permanently, it must be to Edinburgh. While the volumes make vivid for us, however, the main course of his life to the date indicated, - when he was in the fortieth year of his age, - there are some particulars of his family history through the time traversed about which they have left us uninformed. It may be well, at the present point, to supply this defect, and at the same time to add such par ticulars of his later family history as may be required, by way of biographical accompaniment and elucidation, here and there, in the series of his writings generally. Of De Quincey's father we have heard a good deal. We can recollect him as the Manchester merchant, much of an invalid, who died in 1793, at the age of forty, when De Quincey was but a child. Of De Quincey's brothers and sisters we have also heard a good deal. There have been immortalised for us especially those two child-sisteis, Jane and Elizabeth, who had died before their father, so that De Quincey's memories of them survived but as mysterious gleams from his dreamy infancy. Nor are we likely to forget either his eldest and all-domineering brother, William. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas De Quincey, His Life and Writings: With Unpublished Correspondence As we write, a new and elaborately-annotated edition of the Collected Works is being issued under the editorship of Professor Masson, and into this edition have been drawn many of the papers which were referred to in the first edition of this memoir, as having been omitted from the original Collected Works by their author, though they were of the utmost value to De Quincey students, alike as regards the light they throw on their author in a critical and in an autobiographical sense. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Uncollected Writings of Thomas De Quincey, Vol. 1 of 2: With a Preface and Annotations The circumstances attending the composition of the four papers on The English in India and The English in China I have explained at some length in the introductory notices attached to them. And now for a confession! The 'gentle reader' may, perhaps, feel a momentary inclination to blame me when I reveal, that I rather stood in the way of some brilliant articles which were very seriously considered at this period. DE quincey was eager to write them, and I should have been glad indeed to have had them for Titan, but for a fear of allowing the Author to wander too far from the ever-present and irksome Works. Any possible escape - even through other downright hard work, from this perplexing labour was joyfully hailed by him as a hopeful chance of obtaining a prosperous holiday. Book Thomas de Quincey

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thomas De Quincey: A Study Reminiscences, has left a charming sketch. I have often found him at home, wrote Hood, then a sub-editor of the London Magazine, doubtless on a quest for copy, ' I have often found him quite at home, in the midst of a German ocean of Literature in a storm flooding all the floor, the table and the Chairs billows of books tossing, tumbling, surging, open on such occasions I have willingly listened by the hour, whilst the Philosopher, standing, with his eyes fixed on one side of the room, seemed to be less speaking than reading from a handwriting on the wall.' Now and then he would diverge for a Scotch mile or two to the right or left, till I was tempted to inquire with Peregrine in 'john Bull, ' Do you never deviate? But he always came safely back to the point where he had left, not lost the scent, and thence hunted his topic to the end. But look! We are in the small hours, and a change comes o'er the spirit of that old familiar face.' A faint hectic tint leaves the check, the eyes are a degree dimmer, and each is surrounded by a growing shadow signs of the waning influence of that Potent Drug whose stupendous Pleasures and enormous Pains have been so eloquently described by the English opium-eater.
