Book The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Mary Shelley

Download or read book The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Mary Shelley written by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tales from a Mistress of the Gothic Mary Shelley is possibly one of the most renowned women authors of all time. She is, of course, the literary creator of the iconic Frankenstein's monster and that alone has guaranteed it and her immortality rivalled only by Bram Stoker's Dracula in the pantheon of the bizarre. Beyond her most famous literary work, 'Frankenstein, ' she possessed an incredible creative talent, responsible for a dazzling collection of novels, short stories, essays, plays, biographies and travel books. Mary Shelley was an independent, free thinking woman, decades before her time, who strongly adhered the ideals of her father, the political philosopher William Godwin and her mother, the feminist and liberal Mary Wollstonecraft. She notoriously-for her time-became the mistress of the poet Percy Bysshe Shelley, and she subsequently married him upon the suicide of his wife. Those familiar with 'Frankenstein' will not be surprised to find it within this special collection, but those for whom it will be a new experience will discover a superb work of fiction which towers above our perceptions of it from its familiarity through film and television. Fortunately, Mary Shelley did not confine her excursions into the other worldly, weird and Gothic to just this tale of the 'man-made' man. This two volume edition contains two novels and many shorter pieces in testament to Mary Shelley's talent for the literature of the macabre. The second volume of this special collection of Mary Shelley's literary excursions into the bizarre and horrific includes the substantial novel, 'The Last Man.' This fine tale languished in obscurity until after the middle of the 20th century and is another good example of the writing and thoughts of an author far ahead of her time. It tells of a future post-apocalyptic world ravaged and massively depopulated by plague. If the theme seems a familiar one today, it should be remembered Shelley published 'The Last Man' in 1826. It is joined here by 'The Invisible Girl, ' 'The Evil Eye' and 'The False Rhyme.' Available in soft cover and hard cover with dust jacket. Leonaur hard covers are cloth bound, have taped headers and gold foil embossed spines for collectors.

Book The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Mary Elizabeth Braddon

Download or read book The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Mary Elizabeth Braddon written by Mary Elizabeth Braddon and published by . This book was released on 2010-01-01 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A second helping from the 'Queen of Sensation' and her dark imaginings Lovers of the Victorian fiction of Wilkie Collins know that to discover his female counterpart they need look no further than the works of Mary Elizabeth Braddon. She was a prolific author of the kind of dark melodrama much loved by her contemporary audience and her most renowned work, 'Lady Audley's Secret, ' has been often dramatised, filmed and, indeed, has never been out of print from the time of its original publication. Never was the accolade, 'The Queen of Sensation' so well deserved as it was by her. It is not unusual that a writer who produced so much material-and much of that with a flavour of the Gothic-should also turn her talents to the genre of supernatural and strange fiction, since there was much precedent for it among her literary peers and much appetite for it among the reading public. So it is, perhaps, unsurprising that this Leonaur collection of Mary Elizabeth Braddon's forays into the other worldly and bizarre runs to four substantial, satisfying volumes. In this second volume the principal work is the novel, 'The Conflict'. A duel to the death is generally recognised as being a conclusive end to the matter-but the victor here discovers that that may not always be true!.This novel was originally published in two volumes-both of which are included in this special Leonaur edition. Also here are the novelettes 'At Chrighton Abbey' and 'Dr. Carrick' and the short story 'Her Last Appearance.' This collection is available in soft cover and hardcover with dustjacket. Leonaur hardcovers are cloth bound with head and tail bands and gold foil embossed spines.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the creator of Frankenstein comes the secrets of eternal youth, souls that exchange bodies, and ancient Romans newly thawed out of ice. This riveting collection contains all five of Mary Shelley’s compelling supernatural tales, guaranteed to delight even the most jaded of horror fans. About The Mortal Immortal Mary Shelley’s considerable fame is due to her great Gothic novel Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, published in 1818. Frankenstein is considered one of - if not the - earliest pure science-fiction novels. Shelley's powerful tale of blasphemous creation became even more celebrated through its many film adaptations, from Boris Karloff’s iconic portrayal of Frankenstein to Kenneth Branaugh’s Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. During Shelley's lifetime she published just over two-dozen stories, three of which were of interest to science fiction and fantasy readers. Two additional stories were published after Shelley’s death. “Roger Dodsworth: The Reanimated Englishman” was printed in a volume of reminisces by a magazine editor who had commissioned the story thirty years earlier; “Valerius: The Reanimated Roman” remained unpublished until 1976, when both stories were discovered by a Shelley scholar. In gathering all of Mary Shelley’s unprecedented supernatural short fiction, The Mortal Immortal adds to the legacy of a brilliant, innovative, and highly-entertaining author.

Download or read book Frankenstein Or the Modern Prometheus Annotated written by Mary Shelley and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-10-16 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Frankenstein, or the Modern Prometheus, by Mary Shelley: "I expected this reception," said the daemon. "All men hate the wretched; how, then, must I be hated, who am miserable beyond all living things! Yet you, my creator, detest and spurn me, thy creature, to whom thou art bound by ties only dissoluble by the annihilation of one of us. You purpose to kill me. How dare you sport thus with life? Do your duty towards me, and I will do mine towards you and the rest of mankind. If you will comply with my conditions, I will leave them and you at peace; but if you refuse, I will glut the maw of death, until it be satiated with the blood of your remaining friends." "Abhorred monster! Fiend that thou art! The tortures of hell are too mild a vengeance for thy crimes. Wretched devil! You reproach me with your creation, come on, then, that I may extinguish the spark which I so negligently bestowed." My rage was without bounds; I sprang on him, impelled by all the feelings which can arm one being against the existence of another. (Complete bibliography of all of Mary Shelley's writings.)
