Book The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Barry Pain Volume 2

Download or read book The Collected Supernatural and Weird Fiction of Barry Pain Volume 2 written by Barry Pain and published by Leonaur Limited. This book was released on 2022-05-04 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The second volume of Barry Pain's weird stories Barry Eric Odell Pain was born in Cambridge, England in 1864. A graduate of Corpus Christi college, Cambridge, he joined the staff of the Daily Chronicle and Black and White periodicals. He became a regular contributor to the literary magazine The Granta and to Cornhill Magazine, Punch and The Speaker. In keeping with many authors of his era, his literary output was prodigious. Credit for the recognition he eventually achieved is said to have come from endorsements by Robert Louis Stevenson who compared Pain's writings to those of Guy de Maupassant. There is a dark side to some of Pain's writing, although he has been more widely recognised as a parodist and writer of lightly humorous stories. This darker side of Pain's work has resulted in a substantial legacy of supernatural, horror and weird fiction. This is possibly why his work, particularly the very well-known, 'The Undying Thing', was highly regarded by H.P. Lovecraft. In this, the second volume of Pain's strange fiction readers will discover 'Mala', 'Miracles', 'The Unseen Power', 'The Undying Thing' and many others. Leonaur editions are newly typeset and are not facsimiles; each title is available in softcover and hardback with dustjacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Barry Pain was a prolific and popular mystery and horror writer whose career spanned forty years. Though somewhat neglected in his day, he is now seen as an important writer, and a great inspiration for authors such as H. P. Lovecraft. Many of the earliest and most interesting vampire stories, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. We are republishing these classic works in affordable, high quality, modern editions, using the original text and artwork.

Book The Undying Thing and Others

Download or read book The Undying Thing and Others written by Barry Pain and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the course of a long career, chiefly as a humorist, British writer Barry Pain (1864-1928) wrote a substantial body of horror fiction. His early volume, Stories in the Dark (1901), contains a number of powerful specimens, including "The Undying Thing," a tale of a hideous entity lurking in the woods that was much appreciated by H. P. Lovecraft. Later collections-Here and Hereafter (1911), Stories in Grey (1912), and the untitled collection in the series "Short Stories of To-day and Yesterday" (1928)-each contain their modicum of weird specimens, including such notable items as "Smeath," involving precognition; "Linda," a tale of a pact with the Devil; "Not on the Passenger-List," in which a dead husband torments his living wife on a ship; and "The Reaction," about a powerful drug. This volume collects, for the first time, the totality of Pain's weird writing, and also includes the rare novel The Shadow of the Unseen (1907), cowritten with James Blyth, an effective tale of witchcraft. The volume features an introduction by S. T. Joshi, one of the world's leading authorities on supernatural fiction.

And finally, private detective Charlie Parker returns in the long novella "The Reflecting Eye," in which the photograph of an unknown girl turns up in the mailbox of an abandoned house once occupied by an infamous killer. This discovery forces Parker to confront the possibility that the house is not as empty as it appears, and that something has been waiting in the darkness for its chance to kill again.

Book The Eliza Stories

Download or read book The Eliza Stories written by Barry Pain and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “The more I think about myself, the more—I say it in all modesty—the subject seems to grow.” So begins The Eliza Stories, and although the book takes Eliza’s name, her husband is revealed to be the true comic hero, as he displays a self-importance that far outstrips his modest station in Edwardian suburbia. Eliza uncomplainingly smoothes over arguments and watches from the sidelines as her other half tries to scramble up the social ladder. From insulting the domestic staff to ill-advisedly lending money to social superiors, our narrator is by turns patronizing and authoritarian. And just when you think you can’t stand anymore, their son Ernest brings a new and sinister twist to the tale. Written and set in the early 1900s, this is a comic gem.

Book excerpt: The publication in 2001 of "The Ancient Track: The Complete Poetical Works of H. P. Lovecraft" was a landmark. For the first time, all of Lovecraft's 500 or more poems-including hundreds of Christmas greetings, untitled poems, fragments, and poems embedded in his published and unpublished letters-were gathered in accurate texts, with critical commentary and full bibliography. Since that time, a dozen or more poems or poetic fragments have been discovered by scholars and researchers, and this new edition prints these items along with several other works of interest. Poems that Lovecraft revised for various authors are included, along with (where extant) the original poems that served as the basis for the revisions. The original versions of poems by Ovid, Horace, and other classical poets that Lovecraft translated are provided. And the commentary and bibliography have been thoroughly revised and updated. It can well be said that this second edition of "The Ancient Track" is the definitive collection of Lovecraft's entire poetic output. It has been edited by S. T. Joshi, a leading authority on Lovecraft and the editor of Lovecraft's collected fiction, revisions, essays, and letters.
