Looking at the diverse applications of nanotechnology in the healthcare field, the chapter authors discuss its importance in drug delivery, biomedical imaging and medical diagnostics, and healthcare management. The volume emphasizes how nanomedicine can treat different types of cancers and can improve medical imaging for the diagnosis of different kinds of diseases, resulting in quicker and more accurate diagnosis and better treatment options. The volume delves into nanobiotechnology in plants and its application in nanofertilizers and nano-pesticides in agriculture. It also documents how agri-nanobiotechnology can be a tool for innovative green technology that can be applied for global food security, biodiversity, and climate change solutions. The themes of nanobiotechnology in medicine and in plants are merged in the chapter on the types and therapeutic effects of plant product-based nanomedicine for malignancies. The potential toxicity of nanoparticles in plants is also elucidated. This volume provides an insightful overview of nanobiotechnology in medicine and in plants and agriculture that will be valuable for researchers and scientists and faculty and students in the areas of nanobiotechnology, agriculture, plant molecular biology, and medicine and healthcare.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Peptide and Protein Drug Delivery Using Polysaccharides offers an interdisciplinary discussion of polysaccharides applied in peptide and protein drug delivery. Chapters consider basic biology of different polysaccharides of current interest and their production at pilot and large-scale stages by various techniques including, but not limited to, cell and hairy root cultures. Other sections examine factors affecting polysaccharide absorption, metabolism, and excretion in nascent, encapsulated, or conjugated forms, with unique coverage of vaccine absorption, metabolism, and drug delivery. A final section considers analytical methods for detection in tissue fluids and homogenates. Accessible figures, tables, and graphical abstracts are included throughout to support understanding. Specific polysaccharides discussed for therapeutic purposes include cellulose, hyaluronic acid, heparin, carageenan, alginic acid, agar and myrrh, acacia, tragacanth, ghatti gum, chitin, chitosan, starch, glycogen and dextran. - Adopts an interdisciplinary approach across biochemistry, molecular biology, pharmaceutical sciences and drug delivery, and biotechnological perspectives - Features accessible figures, tables and graphical abstracts across all chapters to support understanding - Examines various polysaccharides of current interest and aspects affecting their absorption, metabolism, excretion and detection

Download or read book Fundamentals of Medicinal Chemistry and Drug Metabolism written by M. O. Faruk Khan and published by Bentham Science Publishers. This book was released on 2018-06-01 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objective of this 4-volume book series is to educate PharmD students on the subject of medicinal chemistry. The book set serves as a reference guide to pharmacists on aspects of chemical basis of drug action. This first volume of the series is comprised of 8 chapters focusing on basic background information about medicinal chemistry. It takes a succinct and conceptual approach to introducing important fundamental concepts required for a clear understanding of various facets of pharmacotherapeutic agents, drug metabolism and important biosynthetic pathways that are relevant to drug action. Notable topics covered in this first volume include the scope and importance of medicinal chemistry in pharmacy education, a comprehensive discussion of the organic functional groups present in drugs, and information about four major types of biomolecules (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, nucleic acids) and key heterocyclic ring systems. The concepts of acid-base chemistry and salt formation, and their applications to the drug action and design follow thereafter. These include concepts of solubility and lipid-water partition coefficient (LWPC), isosterism, stereochemical properties, mechanisms of drug action, drug receptor interactions critical for pharmacological responses of drugs, and much more. Students and teachers will be able to integrate the knowledge presented in the book and apply medicinal chemistry concepts to understand the pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics of therapeutic agents in the body.

Download or read book Mathematical Modeling of the Immune System in Homeostasis Infection and Disease written by Gennady Bocharov and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The immune system provides the host organism with defense mechanisms against invading pathogens and tumor development and it plays an active role in tissue and organ regeneration. Deviations from the normal physiological functioning of the immune system can lead to the development of diseases with various pathologies including autoimmune diseases and cancer. Modern research in immunology is characterized by an unprecedented level of detail that has progressed towards viewing the immune system as numerous components that function together as a whole network. Currently, we are facing significant difficulties in analyzing the data being generated from high-throughput technologies for understanding immune system dynamics and functions, a problem known as the ‘curse of dimensionality’. As the mainstream research in mathematical immunology is based on low-resolution models, a fundamental question is how complex the mathematical models should be? To respond to this challenging issue, we advocate a hypothesis-driven approach to formulate and apply available mathematical modelling technologies for understanding the complexity of the immune system. Moreover, pure empirical analyses of immune system behavior and the system’s response to external perturbations can only produce a static description of the individual components of the immune system and the interactions between them. Shifting our view of the immune system from a static schematic perception to a dynamic multi-level system is a daunting task. It requires the development of appropriate mathematical methodologies for the holistic and quantitative analysis of multi-level molecular and cellular networks. Their coordinated behavior is dynamically controlled via distributed feedback and feedforward mechanisms which altogether orchestrate immune system functions. The molecular regulatory loops inherent to the immune system that mediate cellular behaviors, e.g. exhaustion, suppression, activation and tuning, can be analyzed using mathematical categories such as multi-stability, switches, ultra-sensitivity, distributed system, graph dynamics, or hierarchical control.
