Book The Cold Storage of Small Fruits Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Cold Storage of Small Fruits Classic Reprint written by S. H. Fulton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cold Storage of Small Fruits In concluding his report Mr. Wright observes that, in his opinion, people do not quickly weary of high-class fruit, and a longer season than at present exists could be secured for many kinds if the best quality were ensured; but, apart from this, there are periods within the season of several perishable fruits - black currants, for instance - when ability to hold the pickings over, if only for a few days, would mean securing an enhanced price. The results of this test agree in general with the results obtained through the cold-storage experiments of the United States Department of Agriculture as to length of time small fruits may be kept in cold storage. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cold Storage for Tropical Fruits Small purple star apples were picked in a half ripe condition and held for 36 days at 32° F. The skin gradually faded and shriveled after the second week. At the end Of the period the pulp Of the fruit was firm, Of good color and perfect flavor. The same variety, picked ripe, kept well for 30 days, but at the end Of a period Of 57 days had deteriorated in color and appearance externally, while the pulp was still perfect in flavor. Specimens Of the same varieties Of star apples, picked green, half-ripe and ripe were placed in refrigeration at a temperature Of 45° F. For a period Of 40 days. The same changes were Observed as in fruit held at 32° F. The deterioration was somewhat more rapid, however, and molds developed more extensively on skin abrasions. The color of the skin was better preserved at 45° than at 32° F. The texture Of the rind, however, and the texture and flavor Of the pulp were much better in the fruit held at 32° F. Book Storage of Perishable Fruits at Freezing Temperatures

Download or read book Storage of Perishable Fruits at Freezing Temperatures written by William Vere Gruess and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-27 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Storage of Perishable Fruits at Freezing Temperatures: Preliminary Report Many quickly perishable fruits such as berries, apricots, cherries and others can not be held successfully for very long periods at the usual cold storage temperatures for fruit, of 32° F. To 35° F. Because of rapid softening and decay. If held without preliminary treatment at a temperature of 10° F., low enough to freeze the fruit, there is a tendency in certain fruits for the color to become brown and the flavor seriously impaired. It, therefore, seemed desirable to make a pre liminary experimental study of methods of treating the above fruits before storage, at 10° F. To prevent or minimize undesirable changes in color and flavor. At these low temperatures molding or fermenta tion does not occur and ripening process-es are effectively arrested. Therefore, if the problems of retention of color and retention of flavor could be satisfactorily solved, this method of storage should have wide application. The investigations have included not only experiments upon the storage of various quickly perishable fruits, but also upon the utiliza tion of such fruit in canning, preserving, confections, etc., after Six to ten months storage. The data of the first year's experiments have been so promising that it is believed the results will be of considerable immediate value to cold storage establishments, ice cream manufacturers, fruit pre serving factories, and others. Former breweries are equipped with large refrigerating plants, very large glass lined or wooden tank cold storage capacity, and other facilities which could be used for the receiving, preparation and storage of the types of fruits used in the tests. It is probable that a very extensive market could be quickly developed for such fruits during the winter and early spring months and it is believed that the develo'pment of such an industry offers a very attractive field. Book Precooling Shipment and Cold Storage of Tender Fruit

Download or read book Precooling Shipment and Cold Storage of Tender Fruit written by Edwin Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-10 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Precooling, Shipment and Cold Storage of Tender Fruit: With Notes on Packing and Packages While it is known that low temperatures effectively check the ripening process of fruit, and that precooling is of distinct advantage when shipping in refrigerator cars, the problem of precooling for ordinary express shipments is still open for further investigation. Although precooling retards the ripening of fruit, injury is also liable to follow excessive condensation which causes the germination of mould spores and decay when cold fruit is removed from the cooling room to the warm atmosphere of the express car. Book Cold Storage with Special Reference to the Pear and Peach Classic Reprint

Download or read book Cold Storage with Special Reference to the Pear and Peach Classic Reprint written by George Harold Powell and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cold Storage, With Special Reference to the Pear and Peach Before the advent of the cold-storage busmess the supply of summer pears frequently exceeded the demand. This condition of the markets, which were demoralized in hot, humid seasons, pertained especially to the early varieties, like the Bartlett, which ripen in hot weather and need to be sold in a Short time to prevent heavy losses from rapid decay. The introduction of the refrigerator car and of the cold-storage warehouse, together with the rapid growth of the canning industry, has done much to improve the pear situation by artificially establish ing a well-regulated and more uniform supply of fruit throughout a longer period of time. The pear acreage of the country has more than doubled within a decade, and is enlarging the relative importance of cold storage to the pear-growing business, though a large part of the increase, especially in California, along the Atlantic coast from New Jersey southward, in Texas, and in the Central West, is primarily related to the canning industry. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Storage for Apples and Pears: Marketing Research Report No. 924 The principal fruits requiring refrigeration for extended storage are apples and pears. Grapes also are stored extensively in some places, particularly in California. Refrigeration is used also for the precooling or short-time storage of other fruits, such as cherries, plums, and apricots. Rural electrification and automatic refrigera tion equipment are now universal, and indi vidual fruit growers or small groups of grow ers have been building cold-storage plants at or near their orchards instead of relying on large plants that serve a whole community or a large number of growers. This has been coincident with the development of better handling and packing methods. The handling methods, transportation equipment, and facili ties required for sorting and packing extended the distance that apples can be moved from orchard to the cold-storage house so that pack ing and shipping will not be under the pressure of getting the job done in a matter of a few days after picking. Having refrigeration facili ties at hand has permitted the orchardist to give his fruit optimum protection while it is awaiting packing and to employ a compara tively small crew of skilled harvesters instead of having to mobilize large crews. This has prevented fruit from wasting and allowed it to be handled economically in large volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Report on Some Trial Shipments of Cold Storage Apples Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Report on Some Trial Shipments of Cold Storage Apples Classic Reprint written by J. A. Ruddick and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-04 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Report on Some Trial Shipments of Cold Storage Apples To these figures must be added the very large quantity which is stored in cellars 'and odd places all over the country. It is the practice to repack practically the whole of this large quantity of apples, at very considerable expense. This refers principally to the apples stored in the special warehouses. The repacking may be necessary under these conditions of storage, in order that the rotten and defective apples may be discarded, but it results in serious damage to the sound fruit by increasing the number of bruises, to which the apples are more liable than they are at harvest time, on account of their riper and softer condition. These repacked apples are sent forward to market during the winter and early spring months. It is an undeniable fact that a large proportion of them are in a more or less overripened and damaged condition. The shrinkage which occurs in repacking is a direct loss, amounting, on the whole, to a very large sum. The indirect loss from the demoralizing effect of a large quantity of overripe and damaged fruit on the market is also great, and difficult to estimate. As the crop of apples is increasing from year to year, and the industry is growing in importance by the opening of a large market in the prairie provinces in addition to the well sustained demand in Great Britain and continental countries, it is obvious that any means which may be adopted for better preservation and to reduce the waste and cost of repacking should be a matter of interest to the fruit grower and dealer. Book Some Small Fruits Classic Reprint

Download or read book Some Small Fruits Classic Reprint written by R. B. Cruickshank and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-19 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Some Small Fruits Lack of time is usually the excuse given by farmers for not growing these fruits. There is no doubt but that this class of fruits requires care and attention, especially when a fancy marketable product is desired. Naturally, some kinds demand more application thanothers. However, many general farmers are obtaining satisfactory results with a comparatively small expenditure of time and effort. If a man can learn just when and how to perform many of the operations necessary in a small fruit patch, greater success will attend his efforts than when more time is spent, but in an unthinking, unsystematic way. The men who are obtaining returns from their berries consider them well worth the necessary care. The culture of the small fruits ls apt to vary in different localities to a greater degree than does that of the tree fruits. It will often be dependent upon special local conditions and upon the grower himself. In this bulletin only a few of the small fruits, the strawberry, rasp berry, blackberry, gooseberry, and currant, are dealt with and no attempt is made to enter into details or to touch upon special condi tions. Some of the fundamentals and a few rules in common use for the growing of these fruits are given. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Commercial Storage of Fruits Vegetables and Florists Stocks Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Commercial Storage of Fruits Vegetables and Florists Stocks Classic Reprint written by Dean Humboldt Rose and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 50 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Commercial Storage of Fruits, Vegetables, and Florists' Stocks Control of temperature is usually easier in large rooms than in small ones if both are filled to capacity. This is because of the flywheel effect produced by the larger mass of material, including both the commodity and the building material. Refrigeration is thus stored up, so to speak, and temperature changes occur more slowly. For this reason small storage rooms generally will require closer attention than large ones.
