HERE can be no necessity in this work to give a lengthened history of the coinage of England and modes of exchange in use at various periods prior to the issue of copper and brass tokens by the traders of the seventeenth century. To all who take an interest in numismatics the subject is quite familiar, and the many writers who have added to the general stock of information have worn the subject threadbare. The small coinage of England, from the earliest period, was of silver, and as low in value as the farthing, halfpenny, and penny; but from their small size and weight they were extremely inconvenient and readily lost. Small change of a more useful size and weight was being constantly demanded, although it was known that it would have to be composed of a base metal. In the reign of Elizabeth "pattern pieces" were struck, and a proclamation drawn up legalising the circulation of copper money; but owing to the difficulties which presented themselves, the project was abandoned without trial. Elizabeth, in 1594, granted the Mayor and Corporation of Bristol permission to issue a "Corporation farthing" token, which obtained a great circulation, and was of good value. This may be considered the earliest English token issued by authority of the Crown. The need for small change being urgent, lead tokens, generally of mean workmanship, continued to be issued by tradesmen until 1613, when a patent was granted by James I. to John Baron Harington, for the issue of farthings only. On the accession of Charles L to the throne in 1625 the patent was renewed, and the circulation of these almost worthless farthings encouraged by giving twenty-one shillings in farthings for twenty shillings in silver, by which means London and the counties adjacent to the...
