The inscriptions indicate the religious changes of the time. The Muhammadan profession of faith and the Four Khalifs and their virtues have vanished, and in their place appears the new Ilahi formula, "t-J"God is most great: glorified be his glory." This formula either occupies the whole of the obverse, leaving the reverse for the Persian month and Ilahi year; or tUI appears on the obverse, and J and the Hah) year on the reverse. The Emperor's name does not appear upon the Ilahi currency; but it has been pointed out that JJI not only means "God is most great," but also may be interpreted "Akbar is God and the suggestion has been made that the Emperor played upon the double meaning. If he did so, the levity was wholly out of keeping with his character and conduct in all other respects. This coinage endured till the end of the reign, but was never imitated by Akbar's successors. With Jahangir's coinage (after the rupees, nos. 288-9, which appear to have been struck during his governorship of Gujarat, and on which he is styled Salim Shah Sultan and Malik al-Mulk), a new phase in inscriptions begins. The use of Persian distichs was begun on a coin of the time of Akbar, J but Jahangir employed them on the majority of his coins, and the Court poets were busily engaged in manipulating suitable versos. This book was released on 2006-02 with total page 456 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a comprehensive volume containing a catalogue of the coins of the Mughal Emperors, or as they styled themselves on their coins Badshahs, of India from the time of Babar (A.H. 932 - A.D. 1526) to the deposition of Bahadur II by the English (A.H. 1274 - A.D. 1858). It proves to be a reliable index to the geographical limits of the empire in its varying fortunes, owing to the custom of issuing money from many of the most important provincial centres, as well as at the capital, and of recording on the coin the mint from which it was issued. Author: H.Nelson Wright Language: English Keywords: Mughal Emperors Of India Many of the earliest books, particularly those dating back to the 1900s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive.
