Book excerpt: The appearance of Coffee and Conflict in Colombia, 1886-1910, had several important consequences for the entire field of Latin American history, as well as for the study of Colombia. Through Bergquist's analysis of this transitional period in terms of what has been called the dependency theory, he has left his mark on all subsequent studies in Latin American affairs; questions of economic development and political alignment cannot be dealt with without confronting Bergquist's work. he has also provided a major contribution to Colombian history by his examination of the growth of the coffee industry and Thousand Days War.

Book Sustainability in Coffee Production

Download or read book Sustainability in Coffee Production written by Andrea Biswas-Tortajada and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-06-12 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coffee, as a commodity and through its global value chains, is the focus of much interest to achieve fair trade and equitable outcomes for producers, processors and consumers. It has iconic cultural and economic significance for Colombia, which is one of the world's major coffee producers for the global market. This book examines sustainable coffee production in Colombia, specifically the initiatives of Nestlé to create shared value. It describes the transformation of the coffee landscape by the development of economically, socially and environmentally viable and dedicated supply chains. Suppliers have been encouraged to shift production and quality paradigms, in order to develop long-term and sustainable strategies for higher value and premium quality products. This has been partially achieved by establishing a robust partnership with the Coffee Growers Federation and other public, private and social actors, thereby taking control of the institutional architecture and knowledge base that exists in the country. The book provides an important lesson of corporate social responsibility and the creation of shared value for the benefit of farmers, corporations and consumers.

Book Supply Response in the Colombian Coffee Sector

Download or read book Supply Response in the Colombian Coffee Sector written by Merrill J. Bateman and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coffee industry in Colombia has a continuing production surplus that is of great policy concern to the government. This memorandum formulates an econometric model of the supply of Colombian coffee to use in estimating how the coffee industry would respond to price incentives to lower production. Empirical results obtained from the model suggest that (1) changes in price do not affect the intensity of harvesting, (2) there are lags of 5 years between price changes and 7 years between production changes, and (3) the elasticity of coffee supply with respect to price is about 0.5. These findings imply that a 20 percent reduction in producer prices would lead to a 10 percent reduction in coffee production, but only after 7 years. (Author).
