Download or read book Cracking the Egyptian Code written by Andrew Robinson and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2012-05-01 with total page 393 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1799 Napoleon's army uncovered an ancient stele in the Nile delta. Its inscription, recorded in three distinct scripts--ancient Greek, Coptic, and hieroglyphic--would provide scholars with the first clues to unlocking the secrets of Egyptian hieroglyphs, a language lost for nearly two millennia. More than twenty years later a remarkably gifted Frenchman named Jean-Francois Champollion successfully deciphered the hieroglyphs on the stele, now commonly known as the Rosetta Stone, sparking a revolution in our knowledge of ancient Egypt. Cracking the Egyptian Code is the first biography in English of Champollion, widely regarded as the founder of Egyptology. Andrew Robinson meticulously reconstructs how Champollion cracked the code of the hieroglyphic script, describing how Champollion started with Egyptian obelisks in Rome and papyri in European collections, sailed the Nile for a year, studied the tombs in the Valley of the Kings (a name he first coined), and carefully compared the three scripts on the Rosetta Stone to penetrate the mystery of the hieroglyphic text. Robinson also brings to life the rivalry between Champollion and the English scientist Thomas Young, who claimed credit for launching the decipherment, which Champollion hotly denied. There is much more to Champollion's life than the Rosetta Stone and Robinson gives equal weight to the many roles he played in his tragically brief life, from a teenage professor in Revolutionary France to a supporter of Napoleon (whom he met), an exile, and a curator at the Louvre. Extensively illustrated in color and black-and-white pictures, Cracking the Egyptian Code will appeal to a wide readership interested in Egypt, decipherment and code-breaking, and Napoleon and the French Revolution.

Book excerpt: John Anthony West's revolutionary reinterpretation of the civilization of Egypt challenges all that has been accepted as dogma concerning Ancient Egypt. In this pioneering study West documents that: Hieroglyphs carry hermetic messages that convey the subtler realities of the Sacred Science of the Pharaohs. Egyptian science, medicine, mathematics, and astronomy were more sophisticated than most modern Egyptologists acknowledge. Egyptian knowledge of the universe was a legacy from a highly sophisticated civilization that flourished thousands of years ago. The great Sphinx represents geological proof that such a civilization existed. This revised edition includes a new introduction linking Egyptian spiritual science with the perennial wisdom tradition and an appendix updating West's work in redating the Sphinx. Illustrated with over 140 photographs and line drawings.

Book excerpt: “ When Claude Tarba showed off a family heirloom in a crowded Arabian restaurant in Melbourne, that simple act of pride among friends didn’t go unnoticed. It set in motion a journey through the little known high mountain country of The Yemen; then on to the Italianate City of Asmara in the Ancient land of Eritrea and a hi-jacking, which landed him in Western Turkey. Eventually after a number of risky adventures that took him to the far southern reaches of Egypt, he found himself committed to a treasure quest which if proved successful would change the future perception of the human race for the next couple of millennia. Clues uncovered in the Tomb of the God King Tutankhamen entrance our unwitting hero and his new friends, committing them all through something more than curiosity to a trail of intrigue, with villains popping up everywhere, intent on stopping them from achieving their main goal, the installation of Claude as an honorary new Pharaoh. Despite foiling several attempts on their lives, Claude and his companions then have to contend with another scoundrel and his giant of a servant, who have their eyes on the treasure whatever it may turn out to be. The story takes us back into the ancient world of 18th Dynasty Egypt where we meet the legendary King Solomon who with his son and heir, plan and set the stepping stones that may only be discovered and followed by a future generation worthy enough to restore the glory and spiritual beliefs of the Egypt that once was. Not only is the narrative one full of thrills and unusual situations, it is also transports the reader into the colourful life of contemporary and ancient Egypt. The unexpected climax will have everyone thinking, ‘What really did happen thousands of years ago to kick-start civilisation as we know it today?’”

The mysteries of the message itself hint at incredible treasures, and perhaps even a world-altering secret. No one remains at EES to take on this most remarkable mission but Gideon and Garza. The two agree to solve the mystery of the disc's message and split the spoils: the perfect parting gift their employer doesn't know he has given. What lies at the end of the trail may save Gideon's life-or bring it to a sudden, shocking close. Book The Egypt Code

Download or read book The Egypt Code written by Robert Bauval and published by Random House. This book was released on 2007 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Orion Mystery" published in 1994 introduced the world to a highly original, and now internationally famous, star-correlation theory about the Giza Pyramids in Egypt. It sent a huge shock-wave of controversy throughout the scientific community, the effects of which are still felt today. "The Egypt Code" develops this pyramid-stars correlation, challenging the long held assumption held by many Egyptologists that the pyramids were tombs principally meant to house the bodies of dead kings. In addition to this theory, Robert Bauval also reveals an amazing 'Grand Unified Plan' which involves the wonderful temple of Upper Egypt. "The Egypt Code" is unlike any other book before it and covers the whole of Egypt's ancient civilisation in a manner never before attempted.

Book excerpt: It is more than 1300 years before the birth of Christ and the mighty Egyptian Empire is at the peak of its power. The ancient civilisation is enjoying unprecedented prosperity during the 18th Dynasty under some of Egypt's most famous Pharaohs - Ahmose I, Hatshepsut, Thutmose III, Amenhotep III, Akhenaten and Tutankhamun. But every empire has its rivals - here the Hittites, the Mittani, Nubians and Assyrians - and every royal family its enemies.Smenkhkare is the youngest son of Amenhotep III and brother to Akhenamun - later to become the ruler Akhenaten - and Thutmose, plus three older sisters. The scheming Akhenamun dismisses Smenkhkare as a mere stripling, but the wise warrior Thutmose takes the boy under his wing and sets out to make a man of him. This is crucial for Smenkhkare whose father has decided that the only role for the boy will be through a marriage of convenience to the beautiful Mittani princess Taduheppa. The bride is ravishing - but older and more worldly - and refuses to consummate the coupling.Full of sympathy for his little brother, Thutmose advises patience and also invites Smenkhkare to accompany him on a raid to hunt down bandits who have attacked a caravan in the desert. It is a fateful moment. Thutmose is killed by an arrow through the neck, igniting a calamitous chain of events as Smenkhkare discovers the arrow did not come from a bandit's bow.Who, then, did fire the fatal missile? Who would benefit most from the death of the man next in line for the pharoah's throne? Could the murderer be within his own family? Or was someone else close to the family plotting to seize power? Can Smenkhkare trust his favourite sister Nebetah with his thoughts? Can trusted general Coreb help him in his bid to avenge the death of Thutmose? Who would try to eliminate Smenkhkare by placing a deadly cobra in a basket under his bed? And what are the ghastly contents in two other baskets thrust under Smenkhkare's nose?David Adkins' absorbing historical re-imagining The Forgotten Pharaoh, explores the extraordinary and dangerous life and times of a real but little known figure from history - from his child-marriage to exile and then reinstatement in Thebes as pharaoh of one of the most influential dynasties of the ancient civilised world.
