Book excerpt: Excerpt from Across South America: An Account of a Journey From Buenos Aires to Lima by Way of Potosi, With Notes on Brazil, Argentina, Bolivia, Chile, and Peru N September, 1908, I left New York as a delegate of the United States Government and of Yale University to the First pan-american Scientific Congress, held at Santiago, Chile, in December and January, 1908 - 09. Before attending the Congress I touched at Rio de Janeiro and the principal coast cities of Brazil, crossed the Argentine Republic from Buenos Aires to the Bolivian frontier, rode on mule back through southern Bolivia, visiting both Potosi and Sucre, went by rail from Oruro to Antofagasta, and thence by steamer to Valparaiso. After the Congress I retraced my steps into Bolivia by way of the west coast, Arequipa, and Lake Titicaca. Picking up the overland trail again at Oruro, I con tinued my journey across Bolivia and Peru, via La Paz, Tiahuanaco, and Cuzco, thence by mules over the old Inca road as far as Huancayo, the present terminus of the oroya-lima Railroad. At Abancay I turned aside to explore Choqquequirau, the ruins of an Inca fortress in the valley of the Apurimac; an excursion that could not have been undertaken at all had it not been for the very generous assistance of Hon. J. J. Nunez, the Prefect of Apurimac, and his zealous aide, Lieutenant Caceres of the Peruvian army. I reached Lima in March, 1909. Eigenmann and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-19 with total page 512 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fishes of Western South America: I. The Intercordilleran and Amazonian Lowlands of Peru, II. The High Pampas of Peru, Bolivia, and Northern Chile; With a Revision of the Peruvian Gymnotidae, and of the Genus Orestias The present report had its inception as a proposed Part II of The Fishes of Northwestern South America. Part I consisted of the studies made by C. H. Eigenmann, Arthur W. Henn, Charles E. Wilson, and others upon the fishes of Colombia, Ecuador, and the Pacific slopes of Peru (eigenmann, 1922b). Later the Fishes of Chile appeared (eigenmann, as a separate monograph. Mean while the results of the studies Of N. E. Pearson made on the Mulford Expedition, extending our work southeastward to tie up with the explorations of J. D. Hase man, were published as Part II (pearson, The work of the Irwin Expedition of Indiana University, in Collaboration with the University of Illinois, 1918 - 1919, was devoted (a) to the completion of the above-named studies on west coast fishes; (b) the Chilean monograph; and (c) the fishes of the highlands of the Peruvian, Bolivian, and Chilean Andes. The first and second-named objectives were carried out principally by Prof. Eigen mann. Through the generous cooperation of the University of Illinois I was able to have a part in the expedition, giving my time principally to the third objective named above. Through the first portion of the journey Prof. Eigenmann was accompanied by his daughter Adele; on the second portion he was unaccompanied. After trying his hand at exploration in the highlands, at Oroya, 12000 feet, and about Cerro de Pasco, 9000 - 14000 feet, and descending the Urubamba from La Raya, 14000 down to Santa Ana, 3000 feet, Dr. Eigenmann found he must re linquish the high mountains in my favor by reasons of health. For the remainder of the time my apportionment was the third objective mentioned above. In addition to studies of fishes, I collected parasitological materials for the University Of Illinois; earthworms and freshwater sponges being also on the list of desiderata. Later, 1920, I was sent as traveling fellow of Indiana University to continue exploration on down the eastern slopes of the Andes to the Amazon. Collections made on that, the Centennial, expedition are the principal basis of the present volume. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book The War Between Peru and Chile written by Clements R. Markham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The War Between Peru and Chile: 1879 1882 The war on the west coast of South America between Peru and Bolivia on one side and Chile on the other has continued for nearly four years. There have been naval operations of considerable interest, and there were three distinct and successive campaigns in different and widely separated regions, but all three on the Pacific coast. The naval campaign is deserving of attention, because in it the armoured-ships of recent construction encountered each other for the first time, and because guns of extraordinary range, torpedo-boats and torpedoes, and other late inventions have, also for the first time, been used in actual warfare. A study of the operations on shore, during the course of the three campaigns, brings the English reader once more into communion with the descendants of those Spaniards and Indians of whom he has read, surely with more than passing interest, in the pages of Prescott and Helps. The battle-fields are in the land of the Yncas. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Andes and the Amazon

Download or read book The Andes and the Amazon written by C. Reginald Enock and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Andes and the Amazon: Life and Travel in Peru Peru is a country covered with a certain halo of romance - the romance of history; of that time when continents were found, taken, and explored; the romance of a civilised and little-known race-the Inca- extending back before the keels of those old caravels from Europe ploughed the seas of the New World; the romance of the Spaniards, picturesque and cruel; the romance of Nature in her most stupendous operations, her Andean and Amazonian handiwork. The true traveller must not banish the natural sentiment of such portentous matters from his vision. It is not a sentiment which will render it opaque, but is rather the stimulus of imagination, which directs his steps and urges his pen and pencil to the portraying of the things which pass before his senses. Moreover, the true traveller must be an Universalist. That is, he must see the good of things, the good which penetrates everything in conjunction with, or in superior relation to, the so palpable evil of Man and Circumstance. The bare wilderness and the poor Indian have some use and intrinsic value, as well as the cultivated valley and the civilised dweller of the cities. Loyal to Nature and the universe of which he. is a part, the traveller and observer will be an impartial judge; he will ever refrain from "drawing up an indictment against a whole nation," or from hastily condemning any existing thing. Download or read book Chile at the Pan American Exposition written by Comisión Parala Exposici Pan-Americana and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Chile at the Pan-American Exposition: Brief Notes on Chile and General Catalogue of Chile Exhibits; Buffalo, New York, 1901 The greater part of the Republic of Chile is situated on the western coast of the continent of South America, between the Cordillera of the Andes and the Pacific Ocean, and is bounded on the North by Peru, on the East by Bolivia and the Argentine Republic, on the South and on the West by the Pacific Ocean. The boundary of Chile on the North is the Sama River from its source in the Cordillera of the Andes to its mouth on the Pacific, lat. 17 The southern boundary is at the very extreme of the continent, the most southerly point of which is the Island of Diego Ramirez, near Tierra del Fuego. The longitudinal extent of the territory, as far as Cape Horn, lat. 55 is miles. The average width is 101 miles. The total area is estimated at square miles. The configuration of the territory presents, as notable features, the Cordillera of the Andes, which runs from North to South on the East; the coast range which runs parallel with the former, on the West, and the central valley, which extends with short interruptions between both ranges. The Cordillera of the Andes is formed by a longitudinal chain of mountains of great height. In this is to be found the famous peak of Aconcagua, whose height reaches feet above the level of the sea. The coast-range does not present a continuous line, and in general the outline of its slopes is smooth. In many places this range is connected with that of the Andes by transverse ridges. The central valley, which from Santiago to the south presents very definite features, offers the most favorable conditions for the development of agriculture, and in it are to be found most of the cities of Chile.
