Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a time before technology asserted its domination of society, two high school classmates have decided to make a go of it. A simple life, a pure love, and an unexpected event give the couple more than they ever thought two American teenagers could handle---but they go for it, nonetheless. Certain about their educational goals and content in their faith, Merle and Susan open a pathway to a fulfilling future by sticking together and doing the best they can. On track to college educations, they draw strength and inspiration from each other and from their virtuous upbringing. They share an unconditional devotion and belief God has a purpose for them. Their plans are changed when an uninvited visitor drops into their world and turns it upside down. How this "guest" becomes a significant element in their lives unfolds as the chapters roll by. The reader will want to join their journey and share their dilemma. Light years from Earth in a solar system similar to ours, a planet has begun to suffer atrophy as the sun it relies on for energy, hydrology, and photosynthesis deteriorates at a cataclysmic rate. The planet's natives possess great intelligence and design a global strategy of survival through adaptation and substitution of nutrition sources. Realizing their resources were dwindling faster than their ability to survive, they have no alternative but to explore the universe for a mass migration. Theo Rivelet, a visitor from the dying planet, found his new home on Earth. What better friends to find upon his arrival than Merle and Susan?

Book The International Law of the Sea

Download or read book The International Law of the Sea written by Donald R Rothwell and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-08-10 with total page 864 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Praise for the previous edition: “A complete overview of the subject which does not intimidate the reader but rather spurns interest and understanding in the subject.” European Energy and Environmental Law Review “...(the book is) scholarly yet accessible and very readable; thoroughly recommended.” Law Institute Journal Description The law of the sea provides for the regulation, management and governance of the ocean spaces that cover over two-thirds of the Earth's surface. This book provides a comprehensive assessment of the foundational principles of the law of the sea, a critical overview of the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and an analysis of subsequent developments including many bilateral, regional, and global agreements that supplement the Convention. The third edition of this acclaimed text has been thoroughly revised and updated, and now incorporates a dedicated chapter on natural and artificial islands. All of the main areas of the law of the sea are addressed including the foundations and sources of the law, the nature and extent of the maritime zones, the delimitation of overlapping maritime boundaries, the place of archipelagic and other special states in the law of the sea, navigational rights and freedoms, military activities at sea, marine scientific research, and marine resource and conservation issues such as fisheries, marine environmental protection and dispute settlement. The book also takes stock of contemporary oceans governance issues not adequately addressed by the Convention. Overarching challenges facing the law of the sea are considered, including how new maritime security initiatives can be reconciled with traditional navigational rights and freedoms, the need for stronger legal and policy responses to protect the global ocean environment from climate change and ocean acidification, and work on a new agreement for the conservation and sustainable use of marine biological diversity in areas beyond national jurisdiction.

Book Groundwater Resources and Salt Water Intrusion in a Changing Environment

Download or read book Groundwater Resources and Salt Water Intrusion in a Changing Environment written by Maurizio Polemio and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-11-13 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Special Issue presents the work of 30 scientists from 11 countries. It confirms that the impacts of global change, resulting from both climate change and increasing anthropogenic pressure, are huge on worldwide coastal areas (and critically so on some islands in the Pacific Ocean), with highly negative effects on coastal groundwater resources, which are widely affected by seawater intrusion. Some improved research methods are proposed in the contributions: using innovative hydrogeological, geophysical, and geochemical monitoring; assessing impacts of the changing environment on the coastal groundwater resources in terms of quantity and quality; and using modelling, especially to improve management approaches. The scientific research needed to face these challenges must continue to be deployed by different approaches based on the monitoring, modelling and management of groundwater resources. Novel and more efficient methods must be developed to keep up with the accelerating pace of global change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the Tsunami intrusion in the lower plain in the Tohoku region and role played by the coastal and fluvial landforms in the damages. The land-use patterns and the recent urbanization has also been partly responsible for a risk level enhancement. The 2011 East Japan Earthquake and Tsunami has violently hit the coastal plain in the Tohoku and Kanto regions. The coastal geomorphology of these regions have played an important role in the impacts of this natural disaster. The authors introduce tectonic settings, explain and assess these different risks, and discuss future disaster prevention and mitigation planning.

Book The Security of Sea Lanes of Communication in the Indian Ocean Region

Download or read book The Security of Sea Lanes of Communication in the Indian Ocean Region written by Dennis Rumley and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-03-31 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 2007, this book focuses on the security of sea lanes of communication. It was a joint publication between the Maritime Institute of Malaysia (MIMA) and the Indian Ocean Research Group (IORG) and is an important book for three particular reasons. First, it takes a step forward in identifying key policy themes that can be applied to interstate cooperation around the Indian Ocean Region (IOR). Second, the particular theme discussed is not only central to the economic well-being of Indian Ocean countries, but also to many of the world’s most important trading states, and finally the various discussions within the book raise a host of issues to which regional as well as non-regional policy-makers should give serious consideration.

Book England and the Discovery of America 1481 1620

Download or read book England and the Discovery of America 1481 1620 written by David B. Quinn and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-08-18 with total page 559 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1974, England and the Discovery of America places the early explorations of the English in North America in the broad context of 15th and 16th century history. Marshalling evidence that cannot be pushed aside and sifting a mass of fascinating detail (including problems of cartography and the Vinland Map controversy), Professor Quinn presents circumstantial indications pointing to 1481 as the date or the discovery of America by Bristol voyagers – fishermen seeking new sources of cod, and merchant sailors with maps carrying promise of unexploited Atlantic islands. Whereas England did little to follow up her early lead, Quinn demonstrates that English initiatives from the 1580s onward, though slow, were of great importance. He brings to life the men involved in a variety of rash and heroic experiments in colonization and casts new light on their fates. He makes it clear that it was this very profusion of trial and error and trail again, as well as the conviction that settlement in temperate latitudes in North America could be effective if tenaciously enough sought, that enabled the English to strike and maintain routes in their new American world. This book will be of interest to students of English history, American history, colonial history and naval history.
