Download or read book Alberta Oil Sands written by Kevin E Percy and published by Newnes. This book was released on 2012-11-29 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At 170 billion barrels, Canada's Oil Sands are the third largest reserves of developable oil in the world. The Oil Sands now produce about 1.6 million barrels per day, with production expected to double by 2025 to about 3.7 million barrels per day. The Athabasca Oil Sands Region (AOSR) in northeastern Alberta is the largest of the three oil sands deposits. Bitumen in the oil sands is recovered through one of two primary methods - mining and drilling. About 20 per cent of the reserves are close to the surface and can be mined using large shovels and trucks. Of concern are the effects of the industrial development on the environment. Both human-made and natural sources emit oxides of sulphur and nitrogen, trace elements and persistent organic compounds. Of additional concern are ground level ozone and greenhouse gases. Because of the requirement on operators to comply with the air quality regulatory policies, and to address public concerns, the not-for-profit, multi-stakeholder Wood Buffalo Environmental Association (WBEA) has since 1997 been closely monitoring air quality in AOSR. In 2008, WBEA assembled a distinguished group of international scientists who have been conducting measurements and practical research on various aspects of air emissions and their potential effects on terrestrial receptors. This book is a synthesis of the concepts and results of those on-going studies. It contains 19 chapters ranging from a global perspective of energy production, measurement methodologies and behavior of various air pollutants during fossil fuel production in a boreal forest ecosystem, towards designing and deploying a multi-disciplinary, proactive, and long-term environmental monitoring system that will also meet regulatory expectations. Covers measurement of emissions from very large industrial sources in a region with huge international media profile Validation of measurement technologies can be applied globally The new approaches to ecological monitoring described can be applied in other forested regions

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Applied Environmental Metabolomics: Community Insights and Guidance from the Field brings together contributions from global experts who have helped to define and develop the exciting and rapid advances that are taking place in the field of environmental metabolomics. This book is aimed at expert users, students, researchers, and academics in metabolomics and systems biology. It not only demonstrates the best practice in experimental design but also provides insight into state-of-the-art instrumentation and the depth of analysis one can expect to get by using various sampling, chromatographic, mass spectrometric, and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. Common experimental and technical pitfalls are also highlighted. This book provides a unique insight into the world of environmental metabolomics and will help the practicing scientist avoid repeating similar costly mistakes, steering them efficiently toward the generation of high-quality data and high-impact publications. - Highlights overarching principles and considerations for researchers to leverage when planning, conducting, and evaluating environmental metabolomics research - Applies key insights and lessons learned from leaders in the field - Provides real-world case study applications of multiple environmental metabolomics techniques - Integrates the Metabolomics Standards Initiative into case study examples - Encompasses standard operating protocols for metabolomics to help new entrants to the field

Download or read book Long Range Transport of Airborne Pollutants written by H.C. Martin and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 417 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-Range Transport of Airborne Pollutants and Acid Rain Conference This issue of Water, Air, and Soil Pollution is devoted to the collection of papers presented at the Long-Range Transport of Airborne Pollutants and Acid Rain Con ference held at Albany, N.Y., April 27-30, 1981. The issue includes most of the invited papers as well as a good number of the poster papers. The conference consisted of seven plenary sessions at which the invited papers were presented. After each session the participants discussed the session topic in the poster area where the subject was further explored and expanded. The seven technical sessions were: (1) Networks. (2) Models of Delivery. (3) Interactions with Soils and Ground Water. (4) Calibrated Water Sheds. (5) Effects on Aquatic Biota. (6) Effects on Terrestrial Biota. (7) Health implications. The closing session was devoted to the topic 'The Application of Scientific and Technical Data to the Development of Government Policy; Acid Rain - A Case Study'. The four papers given are not included here.

Download or read book Environmental Impact IV written by J. Casares and published by WIT Press. This book was released on 2018-10-23 with total page 521 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comprising a collection of papers from the 4th International Conference on Environmental and Economic Impact on Sustainable Development, the research studies included in this book consider the impact of economic constraints on the environment, taking into account the social aspects as well as the over-use of natural resources. The papers examine issues related to whether some forms of development are compatible with environmental protection, particularly in cases of possible serious contamination and toxicity. Uncontrolled development can result in damage to the environment in terms of the release of toxic substances and hazardous waste. Addressing problems of great importance, this book examines more constructive and progressive approaches to ensure sustainability. A major motivation is to learn from past failure, to avoid repeating similar mistakes, while attempting to prevent emerging threats to environmental and ecological systems. Fundamental to these concepts are the analysis of the inherent risk and the development of appropriate strategies.

This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Summary of International Energy Research and Development Activities 1974–1976 is a directory of energy research and development projects conducted in various countries such as Canada, Italy, Germany, France, Sweden, and the United Kingdom between 1974 and 1976. A limited number of projects sponsored by international organizations such as the International Atomic Energy Agency are also included. This directory consists of nine chapters and opens with a section on organic sources of energy such as coal, oil and gas, peat, hydrocarbons, and non-fossil organic sources. The next sections focus on thermonuclear energy and plasma physics; fission sources and energy production; geophysical energy sources; conversion technology; and environmental aspects of energy conversion and use. Energy transport, transmission, utilization, and conservation are also covered. The final chapter deals with energy systems and other energy-related research on subjects ranging from car sharing and urban passenger transport to nuclear power plants, energy supply and demand models, and high-power molecular lasers. This monograph will be a valuable resource of information for those involved in energy research and development.
