This unnatural practice, will doubtless, be hereafter looked upon as a tale of the olden time, when fable usurped the place of truth; for we are not certain, even at this moment it will obtain belief, that, in Great Britain. Book The Modern Climatic Treatment of Invalids with Pulmonary Consumption in Southern California Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Climatic Treatment of Invalids With Pulmonary Consumption in Southern California In preparing this little hand-book I have undertaken to be as brief as possible. Having been originally intended for the Church, and whilst preparing for that occupation having been convinced that some characters cannot - for their moral good - too often ponder upon and recite the ten command ments, it may be found that I have indulged in frequent repetitions. I look upon a physical delinquent pretty much as upon a moral one - and you cannot make him repeat the laws of health too often for his own good. In fact, some would require a Don Doctor Pedro Rezio de Aguera, Licen tiate of the venerable University of Ossuna, continually at their side, just such a one as attended the unlucky Sancho Panza when he would have gormandized and probably gone off with the gout or apoplexy from a too free indulgence in roasted partridges in his island government. Book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster

Download or read book How to Avoid a Climate Disaster written by Bill Gates and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2021-02-16 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: #1 NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER • In this urgent, authoritative book, Bill Gates sets out a wide-ranging, practical—and accessible—plan for how the world can get to zero greenhouse gas emissions in time to avoid a climate catastrophe. Bill Gates has spent a decade investigating the causes and effects of climate change. With the help of experts in the fields of physics, chemistry, biology, engineering, political science, and finance, he has focused on what must be done in order to stop the planet's slide to certain environmental disaster. In this book, he not only explains why we need to work toward net-zero emissions of greenhouse gases, but also details what we need to do to achieve this profoundly important goal. He gives us a clear-eyed description of the challenges we face. Drawing on his understanding of innovation and what it takes to get new ideas into the market, he describes the areas in which technology is already helping to reduce emissions, where and how the current technology can be made to function more effectively, where breakthrough technologies are needed, and who is working on these essential innovations. Finally, he lays out a concrete, practical plan for achieving the goal of zero emissions—suggesting not only policies that governments should adopt, but what we as individuals can do to keep our government, our employers, and ourselves accountable in this crucial enterprise. As Bill Gates makes clear, achieving zero emissions will not be simple or easy to do, but if we follow the plan he sets out here, it is a goal firmly within our reach.

Book The Conservation of the Child

Download or read book The Conservation of the Child written by Arthur Holmes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Conservation of the Child: A Manual of Clinical Psychology, Presenting the Examination and Treatment of Backward Children The people of this nation have been prodigal of all their resources. It was evident long ago to the thoughtful mind that the time was speedily approaching when we should both repent our extravagance and endeavor to institute such change in our procedure as to conserve what we formerly wasted. Whence arose in the past decade the nation-wide movement for the conservation of our natural resources. Economic stress led to this reform. It is well, even if it is confessedly late. In our greed to make easily a large sum of wealth we have wasted beyond recovery a much larger sum. Wisdom is becoming our heritage, but it has come with a limping gait. The same general truth applies to the conservation of our greatest and noblest asset - our children. We have given the child whose native endowments made easy its education a fairly creditable training. Those that did not readily lend themselves to the system of education as it was were cast aside as waste products of our civilization. We are now reaping the crop in shame. Our land is filled with all sorts of institutions, maintained at enormous cost, in which is crowded our army of mis fits. We cannot by legislative and philanthropic endeavor meet the rapidly growing demand. We have neglected the ounce of prevention and are feebly providing the pound of cure. Book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea

Download or read book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea written by O. H. Peters and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Treatment and Education of Mentally Feeble Children IN considering this subject, we should bear in mind that there are usually bodily imperfections associated with the mental deficiency, and that unless the physical condition of the child is improved, no i amelioration of the mental state can be i expected. We should therefore, in the first place, use every effort to strengthen the body and alleviate its defects, and then undertake the moral and intellectual training.
