Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cleveland Medical Gazette, Vol. 1: A Monthly Journal of Medicine and Surgery; November, 1885-October, 1886 Every one Should bathe, some people more frequently than others, and the essential accompaniments to a bath are good sense, good soap and a rough towel; the first and last to be used at each bath, the soap but once a week. Persons in health Should bathe every morning upon rising, using a cold plunge, a cold sponge, or a cold Shower bath. The time occupied is important, most people stay in the water too long; the plunge bath takes but a moment, the Shower or Sponge bath Should not exceed five minutes. Reaction is established most quickly after the plunge bath, it, therefore, is the best one to use. After a bath the Skin should be wiped dry, then rubbed with a coarse towel or flesh brush until it becomes aglow. Once a week soap and warm water Should precede the cold bath; if the latter be omitted the Skin is left in a relaxed and an anaemic condition - the acne Skin. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cleveland Medical Journal, Vol. 1: January, 1902 From a clinical point of view the diagnosis of pyemia, in many cases, becomes impossible; but the pathologists still adhere to the distinction between septicemia and pyemia, and with perfect propriety. For the clinician the line of demarkation between septicemia and pyemia ceases to exist; it happens frequently that a case begins at septicemia and terminates in pyemia; our clinical evidences are not sufficient to differentiate between the one and the other form in all cases; so that the suggestion offered by Leube to call the condition septicopyemia is one well worthy of discussion and consideration. It might be deemed proper to designate those cases as pyemia in which secondary pus deposits are produced as the result of metastasis or embolism, as Leube suggests, and as septicemia those in which this is not the case. The attempt has been made to speak of a medical, a surgical, and an obstetric septicemia; it is needless to say that such a dis tinction would be, at the least, unreasonable, for septicemia is always septicemia, whatever its origin, whether from an external or an internal entrance of lower forms of life. Those cases, how ever, in which the infection takes place from within the body are those that come to the physician, and because of the mode of infection frequently present a more or less peculiar clinical picture, in like manner as surgical or obstetric scarlatina, as a rule, differs from scarlatina acquired through infection by the throat. It is this peculiar clinical picture that has appealed to Leube and others, and evidently must appeal to everyone. Download or read book The Cleveland Medical Journal Vol 4 written by UNKNOWN. AUTHOR and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-03 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cleveland Medical Journal, Vol. 4: January, 1905 But why this long preamble? Because it seems clear that in order to advance surgical measures, whether they are to deal with diseases of the nervous system, the deformities of children, diseases of the genitourinary tract, those peculiar to women, or those belonging to any other more or less limited branch, speciali zation, or better, concentration of thought and energy along given lines is necessary. Why are we so 'slow to understand that we cannot graft an independent twig of Operative surgery on any of the branches of this huge medical tree, and have it grow undeformed'? Original growth from the main stem of general medicine and surgery is necessary, but some at least of those whose inclinations follow the branch Of neurology must do their own surgery, if it is to aid in the development of their therapy, and not depend on the help supplied by the lukewarm assistance of other departments. This book was released on 2018-01-29 with total page 604 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cleveland Journal of Medicine, 1896, Vol. 1 This case was certainly not one of fully developed peritonitis, but that it was the beginning of one, cannot be doubted. Whether the course of the abdominal inflammation was checked by the thorough drainage of the lower part of the cavity, or whether without the latter it would have gone to a general and suppurative peritonitis, are important questions which with much probability may be answered in the affirmative. This form of double Operation, opening the abdomen first for inspection or drainage and then attacking the collection from below, the writer finds has been proposed and practiced by Noble as a routine procedure, and defended by him because of the danger of vaginal incision without the real state of afiairs within the pelvis being known. It is evident that a better plan for this particular case could not have been chosen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cleveland Medical Journal, Vol. 6: January, 1907 The pathologic changes which obtain in the peritoneum when infected by Koch's bacilli are varied. An infected area may present discrete or confluent granulations, with abundant serous or sero-sanguineous effusion; or the granulations may be enclosed in the fibrous exudate of adhesive inflammation; or the site of established infection may present caseation and ulceration. The pathologic classification of this disease so generally observed, of ascitic, fibrous, and ulcerous forms, is based upon these prevailing features of the pathologic picture presented. All phases of the disease may, generally speaking, be classified under these three heads. A convenient clinical classification may be made of three classes - the acute (febrile), the subacute, and chronic (afebrile).
