Book excerpt: Thomas Clayton is a City trader working the markets in London's Square Mile and living, financially, on borrowed time. But when he returns home to New York for his father's funeral to discover he has been left nearly $50 million in a numbered Swiss bank account, he's at a complete loss to explain how his professor father could have come by such a sum. Whatever the explanation, the mysterious windfall has come at exactly the right time. So he travels to Zurich, secures the funds, and tells his wife to make an offer on her dream country mansion. What Tom doesn't know yet is that his father was being used as a 'ghost' to clean up dirty money by a New York laundry operation: really the money belongs to Carlos Morales, Medellin's biggest cocaine baron. Tom's actions in Europe spark a murderous turf war in the Americas between the cartels of Medellin and Cali, involving a cast of bent lawyers, cops, undercover DEA - and transatlantic assassins who'll stop at nothing or no one to make Tom pay his debt...

Book excerpt: A small city begins to receive enormous amounts of state and federal money. The money appears to come with no strings attached and little accountability. Greed overcomes the good judgment of the city clerk, and a plan is hatched to steal millions of dollars. Soon the unstoppable habit becomes too big, the scheme collapses, and the clerk is caught. While an unfortunate occurrence, it isn’t the first time a per-son in a position of trust steals money. However, what is unusual is right before sentence is publicly announced, the clerk is found dead. The original fraud team is reengaged to review their origi-nal work to see if they have missed any subtle clues that could suggest why someone would want the clerk dead. They team up with other law enforcement personnel to unravel the mystery, which may be connected to international money laundering and political corruption, while trying to stay ahead of an investigative reporter with high-level sources.

Book excerpt: Guides those in recovery in developing the awareness and skills to deal with life's issues by practicing authentic spirituality and emotional sobriety. Spirituality is a critical aspect of the Twelve Steps and other recovery programs. Yet, for those of us disposed to addiction, it can be easy to get so caught up in the idea of our Higher Power and the abundant joys of a spiritual life that we experience "spiritual bypass"--the use of spirituality to avoid dealing with ourselves, our emotions, and our unfinished business. In Recovering Spirituality, researcher and clinical psychologist Ingrid Mathieu uses personal stories and practical advice to teach us how to grow up emotionally and take responsibility for ourselves. Without turning away from the true benefits of an active spiritual program, she shows us how to work through life's challenges and periods of pain while evolving and maintaining an authentic relationship with our Higher Power.

To achieve continuing growth in your business while defending against upstarts, you need to understand clearly what disruption is and how it works, and know how it applies to your industry and your company. In this collection of Christensen’s most influential articles—carefully selected by Harvard Business Review’s editors—his incisive arguments, clear theories, and readable stories give you the tools you need to understand disruption and what to do about it. The collection features Christensen’s newest article looking back on 20 years of disruptive innovation: what it is, and what it isn’t. Covering a broad spectrum of topics—business model innovation, mergers and acquisitions, value-chain shifts, financial incentives, product development—these articles illuminate the impact and implications of disruptive innovation as well as Christensen’s broader thinking on management theory and its application in business and in life. Book Sir Robert Clayton and the Origins of English Deposit Banking 1658 1685

Download or read book Sir Robert Clayton and the Origins of English Deposit Banking 1658 1685 written by Frank T. Melton and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2002-08-22 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based upon the most extensive early banking archive known to survive, this book is the first major study of Stuart banking since R. D. Richards's The Early History of Banking in England (1928). It traces the origins and growth of banking from the late sixteenth century to the 1720s through two generations of a scriveners' bank established in 1638 by Robert Abbott, and perpetuated by his nephew, Robert Clayton, and John Morris. With deposits from landowners' rents and stock sales these bankers practised as moneylenders and money-brokers for another sector of the gentry needing capital to offset the effects of the Great Rebellion and an agricultural depression. After 1660 Clayton and Morris integrated mortgage security into banking practice. This study examines the elaborate stages of land assessment and legal change which enabled bankers to offer large-scale, long-term securities to their clients, a pattern followed later by other banks such as Childs, Hoares, Martins and Coutts.
